Anyone going?
Anyone planning on racing?
I'm planning on going and racing.
Any advise is more than welcome.
I'm not planning on record breaking as my wallet isn't thick enough.
I do, however, plan on joining the 130 club.
As it stands right now my XB9S has the Buell Race Kit, and the XB12 Box Top.
I plan on some mods to the engine, some head work, and possibly a bigger bore.
I don't want to be thoroughly embarrassed by the Cooked Goose Team of Moto Guzzis.
What do ya'll think?

We'll be there at the first meet in late April..

come,.. you'll have a great time.

I'm expecting mid to high 170's from my 100in motor.

I broke 140 mph my very first time there on my street XL and eventually got it up to 149+mph.

Don't worry about records, but there are a few that 130 mph might take.... remember that at Maxton, you can run up classes,...

ie,.. modified can run altered, 1000cc can run 1000cc and up classes, pushrod can run normal motor classes...

And Maxton is on pavement for the most part (as long as you make this corner I keep hearing about). Maxton is traction.

Really? Do you know any off hand?
My only goal was to get my feet wet. The real racing towards the end of the season or next year, but that would be more than awesome!

You'll need:

(normal saftey gear)
- leathers, 1 or 2 piece full-zip
- Snell 2000 helmet
- gloves
- 8 inch high boots

The bike needs safety-wired.

Both front/rear axel nuts must be wired,..

Fluid drain plugs, input must be wired
(our XL oil tanks can be duct tapped down)

Oil filter needs fastened, we put a hose clamp around the oil filter and safety wire that.

Tech inspection will look for throttle release, steering locks must clear hand on bars, steering dampner is a must have above 125 mph, it can not be used as a steering lock.

Dead man cutoff switch, if you fall off the bike shuts down. (get a real switch with lanyard [pingel], although tying the plug wires to your body is legal, some tie to the on/off switch)

We've completly setup a streetbike before (except steering dampner) at the track before.

It's a good pit scene, everyone helps everyone.

..... and those guys on the italian harleys are actually pretty cool, and have some fast bikes.

There are open records still, although we prefer to keep them thatway for now,...

... there is a points race for points (we won it 2002 with Roadkill) that's based upon how much faster you break an exsisting record...

the Hyabusa's have almost eliminated all their open records while we have a few left...

once we figured out the points race was based upon treachery and deceit,.. we were a shoo-in.

Found this on one of the sites of a Buell set up for Maxton. And at Maxton you don't have to wash the salts off your bike afterwards. :)

Ah, back when I still imbided, actually way back, a friend's anonymous granddad made the smoothest clear water you've ever had, around 180proof or so, wicked smooth, and great in a vanilla milk shake when one is under the influence or under the age or something like that. Foggy memories for some reason. All second hand info, uhem, of course, cough cough.

We'll be there. David, you will love it. Maxton is home to the best bunch of folks. Everybody offers help, parts and advice. Beware...it is addicting....and before the end of the first meet you might be planning a race only dedicated machine. BTW, what is the top speed of a race kitted XB9?

Jim, I am looking forward to seeing you again. Your goal sounds very obtainable as you are one of the most "aerodynamic" people I know. I'd love to see how fast you could go on a ricer.....

The points system was changed this year. You can now accumulate points for running on an open record. This does away with the sandbagging that was done at past events.

Isn't the first meet in March or was it changed this year?

ok that curve...

it's not a curve at all, it's a slight bend.

now maybe if'n your getting those 240mph trap speeds that bend will turn into a curve..

Thanks all!
I'm looking forward to this very much!
Looks like a go, as far as equipment goes.
Both front/rear axle nuts must be wired,..
I don't have any axle nuts, what do you think I'll have to do about that?
I'll have to put back on the original handlebars.
I'll have to get a steering damper.
Wow, I thought I'd have a million things to do to the bike to get it ready. Most all of this is pretty simple to do.
BTW, what is the top speed of a race kitted XB9?
I plan to find out just that.

Without the race kit I think it's like 130, but not sure.

All,
COME ON DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!
You'll have great time. Guaranteed.
Good times and great people...it don't get any better. Always like to see new folks and new machines make a showing.

Here's another place you can go to get answers to your questions. Membership to this new group is open.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ECTALSR/

Also, the ECTA site http://www.ecta-lsr.com has the 2004 race schedule posted as well as all the current records.

Glitch,
There's not been any XB's show up as yet. Can't wait to see what it can do. 130's on gas would definately put you "in the hunt" for the 1000cc pushrod classes.

Mikej,
Karen, my best half, will get a kick out of you posting her pic on the Bad Web. The bike has undergone many changes since that pic was taken two seasons ago. Actally it's constantly changing.

Good luck to all in 2004 racing season.

The rear pinch bolt is recessed, any suggestions?

there was is an issue on this subject, still is, 03 rules addressed this but were changed back to 02 rules because of whiners, these rule changes are supposed to take efect this year.

The proposed 2004 SCTA rules are:

Wheelbase, shorter than 68 inches and your in modified, over 68 in your in alt and your seat pan must be equal or below the top of the rear tire.

(i believe it's 68, although I've heard 70/72 inches tossed around)

2002 and prior there were different ways to go back and forth between alt/mod with gas tank size, footpeg location, wheelbase.

Mikej, we always have a great time.

Glitch, on your rear pinch bolt...don't know if this will help but on the recessed pinch bolts on the S1W's front end I made 3/8 long spacers out of tubing and used 3/8 longer bolts to get the heads out where I could drill and wire them.

On the differences between modified and altered...I think I've got a scanned version of the ECTA 2003 rulebook...if anyone wants it email me and I'd be glad to send it to you.

You guys know of any XB12's that might come down? Though Sidney's (Guzzi) 158+ 1350 Production record is rather stout it would be great to see a 12 take a run at it.

Hi Pammy, though we've not spoken before I've seen you mention coming to Maxton. That would be great. The more the better. Same goes for all Elves and nonElves.

All, stop by the Batts Racing pit if there is anything we can do to help or just to say "Hi".

Jim,I don't think it was whining.I seem to remember that with all of the changes there were alot of bikes left with no class they could fit into any more.Even some of longtime racers/officials had their bikes effectively obsoleted.(and other than a H/D I don't know of a lot of bikes that you can get the seatpan lower than the top of the rear tire.)

Glitch, I'll be down at Maxton at the end of March or April..running 1000 Modified pushrod gas, it's a record my wife's bike has held, but it's soft right now...the newer top end in our Race bike, A 2001 Hugger by the way, will get in the mid 140's.

Your XB9 is mostly limited by it's gearing, unless you do some gear changes, about 139 or 140 MPH in top form. The silly belt tensioner that's not spring loaded, mounted hard on your Bolts is the thing to get around for getting geared better for all out runs. I Know the JDees guys probably did a primary gear change with their Bolts they ran at Bonneville, especially in Production class, using XB12 primary gearing in a 1000 cc Class XB9. Of course, I'm guessing the above, but I don't know how they could have done it otherwise & stayed Production class legal with that hard mounted tensioner...unless they repositioned it & covered it up cosmetically, which would be Okay I imagine.

Thanks Dale!
I think the European bikes are geared ( "sprockets" ) differently than the US bikes. More for top end. That may be how they got around the fixed idler. Right now I'm just getting me and the bike ready to pass safety inspection. I want to get my feet wet and see how all this is run. Once I've got the feel of how everything goes, (and get up some more money) I'll be out for some real racing.
