Honda drops Supersport in favor of FX... What would motivate them to drop SS to concentrate on FX? Could they be worried that a win by Ducati or another small upstart factory contender might hurt sales? Moto Guzzi still undecided. I hope they go for it... http://venus.13x.com/roadracingworld/banmanproSQL/banmanproSQL/banman.asp?ZoneID =1&Task=Get&X=1068504351520 |

quote:3. The FX 600 may answer the age-old question: How fast would a 600 Superbike be? A. I guess we'll find out. Being reasonable, we should expect 135-140 horsepower from an FX 600. They'd go more, but we have the same camshaft limitations as Superbikes—stock lift but all the duration you want and stock material valves.
From AMASUPERBIKE Gee, Blake, you're wrong again!

I have been waiting for you to post something on this Jose' I had strong suspicions on this one for a few months now, and Miquel on a FX 600, along with Jake and whatever factory and satelite metric teams that chose to join them will be extremely hard to compete with. We will be back in Formula USA again next year, we really wanted to go to AMA, but it is just not going to happen with the cards that have been laid on the table. One of our sponsors called yesterday and will be giving us some XB12's to run this year, so it is all good! |

I would like a team to just run a XB 12or 9 in all the the races and be consistent. You never know when the BIG crash or mech failures take out THE BIG BOYS and a small upstart factory contender ends up on the podeum!! Plus the SOUND of the thundering twins among the singing bees is awesome especially at tracks like Daytona! GO BUELL!!

Sorry I didn't mean to post anonymous I hit the wrong key! Still think Buell should run the AMA circuit just to be there and good things will happen. |

Blake is wrong... again. Bloody hell. I hate it when that happens! JQ, since you seem to delight in my wrongness... could you please point out what exactly was wrong with what I said?... Kevin Erion said wrt IL4 600cc FX machines... quote:You could get 145 horsepower out of a 600 – maybe 150 horsepower.
Blake said (thinking of the above quote by Kevin Erion)... quote:It won't be easy (for FX Buells to compete with FX 600's). The 600cc bikes are predicted to put down between 140 and 150 rwhp. But yeah, I think a Buell can be competitive with 'em.
Okay, since then the rules have been refined limiting some of the options for the FX 600cc machines. So now the Honda team crew chief says... "Being reasonable (read conservative), we should expect 135-140 horsepower from an FX 600." Parenthetical comment added by me. Congratulations JQ, you discovered a different opinion based on a different situation than the one that I based my statement on. I appreciate you taking such an interest in helping to maintain the integrity of my statements and opinions throughout history. I sure have been wrong a lot in my life. It's so very comforting that you are here to help point out my wrongness on every turn. Back to the topic... Why is Honda dropping out of the SS class with their leading SS racer of all-time and moving to FX? I wonder if Miguel would rather add to his record and stay in SS instead. |

I will speculate, and it was proven this year, the R6 Yamaha was the bike to have in SS, Honda wants a championship and they believe Formula Extreme is the place to get it. It is odd though, there seems to be a ground swell away from Superbike to 1000 Superstock as it is said to represent more of what the buying public wants to see?? and then to see Honda move away 600SS to Formula Extreme is a very odd twist indeed! But a team wants to run in what they think they can get a championship in, Honda will NOT be the only metric teams in FX, they are just setting the bar. But you know what, behind the bodywork they all look about the same going around the track, the only difference at this point is that Formula Extreme laps times will be quicker than 600SS has ever been and Honda just wants to be on the podium. I dont want to sound negative, but Buell needs to come up with about 8 seconds at Daytona over the winter in order to get in top 10, that is huge. It is disappointing as I really wanted to be there!

Blake, If only the sequence of events you describe were true. If you follow the LINK I pointed to earlier, you will see that I tried to explain to you how the rules had changed and Mr. Erion's statements were no longer applicable. But of course you did not listen and posted the following:
quote:You call it "lowering expectations" if you want. I'm just calling it like I see it. I could be wrong. Given that the factory Supersport bikes are faster than any Pro-Thunder bike ever was, I think my assessment of FX is reasonable. What do you, the almighty Buellstradamus, predict?
To which I predicted, correctly:
quote:I predict FX Horsepower, Buells included, will probably be in the 130 range, MAYBE 140's, DEFINETLY NOT 150.
To which you replied:
quote:The AMA Supersport bikes are putting down 130 rwhp. Don't you have a clue as to how amazingly fast those bikes are compared to their stock forms? Yeah, ask Mr. Erion. Ask him also what kind of power he gets out of his best Supersport bike.
I did ask around the paddock at VIR, and the number that I was told by THREE different people around the paddock was the following: 122 Horsepower. This number was later confirmed by someone who works for a magazine that you like to Read Really Well. So, the reason that I like to point it out is that you will never admit to being wrong like you just tried to above and your attitude to people who dare disagree with you leaves a lot to be desired.

Why Honda is in FX: Mr. Ludington says:
quote:4. These may be the most highly-modified 600s we've seen since the old AMA/CCS GTU endurance series. A. A 600 with a set of Superbike wheels, slicks and Superbike front end on it looks pretty ferocious. I'm looking forward to that, it'll be more of a tuners class for a 600 effort. 5. So, Honda exits the 600 Supersport class; yet the Yamaha will race the FX class as well. Should we expect different results? A. We'll have some abilities there that we didn't have in Supersport. We'll be able to run the same weight as everyone else, which was the big downfall this year. We'll also be able to tune the chassis a little more than we could in Supersport.
That's the key, in FX Honda can spend a lot of $$$ getting their bike down to the minimum weight allowed: 350 pounds. Buell will not only need to get reliable 135-140 HP out of their 1350cc pushrod twin, they will need to get their bikes down to 350 pounds to be competitive with Honda, Yamaha, Ducati, Moto-Guzzi and whoever else decides to race in this class. In FUSA trim the Buells are at around 390 pounds. A factory backed Buell team can do it, but a true "privateer" team like Hoban would find it very difficult. It makes more sense to stay in FUSA. So I'll see you guys at the FUSA events, and the Hal's/Kosco crews at the AMA events. I agree with Hobanbros, what might happen in 2004 is that the two most exciting classes for the manufactures and the fans alike will be FX and Superstock. If that happens look for the Superbike and Supersport rules to shift in that direction. edited by josé_quiñones on November 13, 2003 |

JQ, You must be correct then if the teams at VIR told you 122 rwhp. They certainly have no reason to conceal what kind of power their bikes are making. Or do they? Personally, I think my sources are more credible. Racers in the CMRA are getting 122 rwhp out of their supersport machines. One such racer, now going pro told me point blank that he couldn't come close to matching the HP of the factory machines. Look at the power question logically... Would you expect, with all else being equal, that a 122 rwhp machine could keep up with and beat a 140 rwhp machine on an ultra high speed track? Naw, the factory teams would have no reason to conceal what kind of power their SS machines are making. How naive is that? These are the same people after all who will use illegal parts (recall the lighter oil bypass valve spring) just to gain a meager 3% more peak HP. Yeah, they are going to divulge to you what kind of peak HP their machines are putting down. Right. Good one JQ. I don't see Superbike losing its status as the premiere class in AMAPR. It has the biggest baddest fastest bikes. It will still be where all the top riders compete and where the fans congregate most heavily. On the Supersport rules versus Superstock... Which are more liberal in allowing modification from stock form? Buell would need to drop 40 lbs to compete with Moto Guzzi? Guzzi has a 350 LB race bike? In a drag race an extra 40 pounds amounts to about 5 or 6 rwhp, not a huge difference. If the 600cc FX factory machines are flat out blowing by the 749's and XB12R's on the high speed straights that will be a pretty good indication that they are making far in excess of 130 rwhp. If they make 140 rwhp would that fall within the range I stated? How was I wrong again? I keep forgetting. |

What prediction of mine is that? JQ, If you are going to stomp into the discussion beating your chest proclaiming that "Gee, Blake, you're wrong again!", the least you can do is demonstrate where I am so terribly egregiously wrong so as to demand such vigorous proclamation and attention. I really am flattered, but really, what prediction of mine turned out to be wrong? |

The one you tried to explain away in your 3:51 post yesterday, which was based on outdated information, which I showed you was outdated but you ignored. You also predicted that the Yoshimura GSXR1000's would win every race after Daytona this year. Of course that did not happen, but I figured I did not want to pile on and point that out too. |

Roger, Sigh... It is a good natured joke. Apparently I need to do a better job of indicating that. Maybe you didn't know, but I was the one that dubbed JQ as "Buellstradamus" some time ago for his accurate prediction of Buell things to come. Good grief... name calling? You are such a poophead! Rick, If by "that says it all" you mean that FUSA Thunderbike is a wonderfully defined racing class that allows a multitude of differently configured machines to compete on a level playing field, I certainly agree. Somehow I think you were meaning to express something else. Where ya been? You weren't in Iraq were you? Can't recall whether or not you are a reservist. |

Yes, FUSA Thunderbike is a wonderful class except that an obsolete early 90's middleweight inline 4 can spank the field. I wasn't in Iraq...I'm an inactive reservist with the lowest re-enlistment rating ...needless to say my chances of going back are slim. |

Yes, a 98 horsepower, 393 pound early 90's Honda CBR900F2. Won by 24 seconds. The difference is that it was ridden by Michael Barnes, who used to do the same to the rest of the Thunderbike field when he used to ride the Kosco X1 If you read the event coverage in the Latest RRW, with all the Buell breakdowns that happened to the top teams, you can't help but feel demoralized, if you are a Buell fan. But next year it will be agains the AMA teams, on TV, so please, I don't want to see Buells blow up Live on Speed Channel. |

Bigsherm, You might want to check the accuracy of that statement. You may be thinking about the practice rules. Kudos to Michael Barnes. He has certainly proved himself a racer with which to be reckoned. Sounds like Daytona had an appetite for Buells. Daytona High Bank>>> "Burp... can I get some 5W30 to go with that last Buell?" Congratualtions to Dave Estok and Kosco HD/Buell for winning the 2003 FUSA Thunderbike Championship. It wasn't even close. edited by blake on November 15, 2003 |
