Wow!!! Fantastic! Thanks for the update. I was thinking that race was coming up and hoping you'd update us . . . I was just hoping they'd do okay. I hadn't even hoped or guessed they would do that well. Congratulations to all involved!! Really great news! You made my day. |

And in case anyone missed it, here's a list of the participants Jens posted a couple weeks ago: http://www.1000km-hockenheim.de/pdf/Nennungsliste2 008_klasse4.pdf After seeing that list, I thought even a top 10 finish would be impressive. The actual results are much better than I would have dared hope. (Message edited by elvis on March 22, 2008) |

Great report, Jens! Thanks I love this quote from the guy on XBORG Es war eine Augenweide zu sehen, wie die 1125R auch auf den Geraden mit den KTM, BMW, DUCATI mithielt bzw. vorbeizog... meaning... It was pure eye candy to see the 1125R not only keep up with but also pass the KTMs, BMWs and Ducatis on the straights. -------------------------------- Addition: By the way, did they run belts? It's interesting that the Bonn bike appears to have stock fairing - and it doesn't even seem to have a belly pan: Since all of the shots are from the right side, I can't tell if they're using belt drives (though from the photo Jens posted, it looks like it could be a belt). Both are definitely using ZTL brakes. It's interesting that we've generally just assumed that the 1098 and RC8 are "race bikes" while the 1125R is a "street bike". So the 1125R - while a good bike - really shouldn't be competitive in a performance comparison. These results may give us reason to re-think that idea. |

Yes, I noticed that too. Gasp! No bellypan.. How un-racing! The 1125R is already shaping up to be a good contender in racing. The promising start in MotoST (although foiled by belt crud buildup) and now this 600mile race in Germany. I believe the niche might lie in the endurance race category but I would not be surprised if it did well in v-twin sprint races classes as well. One thing is for sure. It will be exciting! Asbjorn |

The endurance racing classes are beginning to fill an interesting niche between the top Superbike racing and the more amatuer club racing series'. That gives a chance for manufacturers like BMW, Aprilia, Buell, KTM - who don't have the budgets and/or established road-racing programs to race in Superbike - to do some good racing at a medium level on bikes that are more stock than Superbike. BMW has certainly embraced the idea with the creation of their HP2 sport (the only bike to beat the 1125R in this race). And with classes designed for twins, we get to see less traditional and more diverse bikes than the Japanese inline 4's that dominate the top classes. I'll be very interested to see how Steve Crevier does in Canadian Superbike this year. The anecdotal evidence we're seeing so far seems tho indicate the 1125R may offer a competitive platform and it will be interesting to see what this platform can do in the Canadian Superbike trim. The 1000 Km are part of the german stocksport series. So Brakes have to be stock, also a Bellypan you must not have. KTM and BMW were factorybikes. Rico Penzkofer again get down in the race. Full list of the results will come up on Tuesday. Jens |

Thanks Jens! Looking forward to hearing more! I don't know much about the race, but just considering the location and the format and the fact that KTM sponsered it and there were at least 4 RC8's and 4 HP2's, I certainly would have assumed that KTM and BMW saw it as a showcase for their bikes. And while BMW and KTM certainly did well, it looks like the Buells crashed the party and really made a statement. BMW and KTM can take some pride in beating the 1098's, but Buell can take pride in beating everyone except BMW. I said yesterday that you made my day, but I may have understated it. As a Buell racing fan - with realistic expectations - I would have loved to see something like this, but never really hoped for it. You may have made my year! |

BMW and KTM can take some pride in beating the 1098's, but Buell can take pride in beating everyone except one BMW. This is Great news! Things are looking up! |

Here is the Result: http://www.1000km-hockenheim.de/pdf/KLASSE4_ERGEBN IS_2008.pdf Tryed to copy the list in, but the tables workt not out. Elvis, the KTM were brandnew RC 8 factory bikes. The rules are easy in that class, maximum 3 Zylinder, 4-stroke, no cc limited. The bikes are "stock" but modificatians are allowed. Engine tuning is in that class no point (normally not allowed) since 180 HP Ducati 1098 R race there..... Last year the class was limited to 185 HP. The evening before the bike go in the parc fermee. In the morning they start out of the garages to go a 1000 Km Endurance test in limited time with 2 riders. After the Team got enough laps, the bike go direct from the track (so you need to fuel the bike in the endurance session) again in an(outside) parc fermee. Than the bikes will be pushed into the start/finish straight and go from there with Le Mans start into a hard sprint race of 16 Laps (only 1 class). Who is first, win the race. An exciting day, special when 150 Bikes of all 4 classes are in the endurance test on the Hockenheim GP Track. Jens |

Very exciting. Thank you Werner for the wonderful photos! I was trying to decipher the race format rules by reading on the website for Hochemheim 1000KM. This is what I am given to understand: Class 4 (where the Buells are running) run 847Km endurance race first. The points awarded for the endurance portion is based on best average lap time. And there is a minimum requirement for how many laps must be completed to be able to go on to the sprint portion. After the endurance race is completed the bikes go back to Parc Ferme?? (Why are Germans using French?) Anyway, i take that to mean a paddock where the bikes are kept under race official's observation until they are ready for the next segment; the 16 lap Sprint race. The gridding for the sprint race is determined by the result from the endurance race. The bikes are only permitted to refuel while waiting in the Parc Ferme. The winner is selected based on points awarded in the endurance and sprint portion. Is that about right? If I have interpreted it correctly, then I'd say it is a complicated but very interesting race format! Asbjorn |

Jim, I didn't see the sticker at Buell-Hannover when I was there last summer, otherwise I would have bought a few, but I just sent an Email to Buell-Racing inquiring... http://www.buell-racing.com/ Jens, I will see you again at this years MSM! I kept putting off Emailing you about a shirt, so hopefully I will be able to pick one up from you in person. Great meeting you last year and can't wait to see you (and all the other German Buellers) again! 1313 (Message edited by 1313 on March 24, 2008) |

Thanks for checking Brankin. Jens, what is that bike in the picture you sent me? It's labled XBRR, but it appears to have a belt drive. And and adjustable wheelbase, which I didn't think worked with belt drives. |

Makes you wonder what the possibilities could be with Buell factory support. Buell would surely sell more bikes..and the new owners will be shocked at how street friendly their new race bike is... |

The logo on the side of the bike. Circular with Buell Hannover at the bottom and the girl with the staff in the center. Is that the politically correct way of saying STRIPPER POLE? Great job on the race by the way! I wonder what Rocket would have to say to those results. What? TWO Buells fresh out of the crate ahead of those Ducati's? |
