From RRW press release:

In post-race inspections, however, Team Rightsforbikers.com 69 and Moto Corse were both found to be over the 90-horsepower limit for the class. This elevated James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing Buell’s Paul James and Jeff Johnson to second and Richie Morris Racing Buell’s Clint Brotz and Tripp Nobles to third, respectively, in GST.

In spite of losing a footpeg in the opening laps, a crash and radio problems that caused an unscheduled pit stop, Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing was in contention for the overall win, but rubber build-up on the pulleys caused the drive belt of the team’s Buell 1125R to fray to the point it needed to be replaced. A fire during a later refueling stop brought Bruce Rossmeyer’s Daytona Racing race to an early conclusion.

Guess they will be switching to a chain drive.
Wonder how the fire started?

Congrats to RMR & James Gang/Hoban - great finish in GST!!!

Really not a bad showing for the 1125r in it's debut; RMR will get the bugs worked out I'm sure.

We just hit the road on the way home from Daytona. I saw the thread so I thought I would give everyone an eyewitness account.

It was a great weekend for the James Gang. We took home a 1st place in the ASRA Team Challenge GT Lites class, and ended up with a 2nd place finish in Moto-ST GST.

The Moto-ST season opener today was a helluva good race. They call this "endurance" racing but it's really a three and a half hour long sprint race. Some of the most well-known names in motorcycle racing today are in the series, resulting in a very high level of competition.

As for James Gang, we unfortunately got off to a slow start when Jeff Johnson got caught up in traffic at the beginning of the race and was left behind by the Ducati entries and the Richie Morris Racing XB12R. We had more bad fortune when Jeff got stuck behind the Safety Car during the first caution of the race. This put us a lap down behind our closest competitor, RMR.

We finally caught a break thanks to a couple flawless pit-stops and some very spirited riding on the part of Paul James and Jeff Johnson. We caught and passed RMR, and Jeff was rapidly closing the gap on the number 20 Ducati, but there just was not enough time. At the end of the race we were still some 22 seconds behind them, and we unofficially finished fourth when the number 77 bike ran out of fuel on the last lap.

After the race, the top five finishers have to present themselves for dyno testing and inspection. Two of the Ducatis were bumped for being over the horsepower limit, which moved us up to second place in the official standings.

I was concentrating on what was going on in our pit, so I can't tell much about what happened with the 1125's today. Shawn and Danny were really tearing it up, but they had a fire during a pit stop that put them out of the race.

There are at least 6 more races in the series this year, with the next one at VIR in Virginia on April 27th. If you can, you should come check it out. For now, James Gang is headed home to the Midwest to clean up the bikes and get ourselves ready for the next run.

I am guessing they do not broadcast these races at all?

Very cool results and things look very positive for the 1125!

Reading the lap times it seems to be that 1125R is very competitive in this class. I'm really excited about this season. The rubber build up and belt issue will be worked out over time.
I have a question. What is dry brake? That is what afflicted the other 1125R team.

Could someone provide the results for the Buell 1125? How many were entered in Moto ST and where did they finish? How reliable and how fast were they?

A Dry Brake is what endurance bikes use in place of a conventional gas cap. It allows for venting the tank while 'dumping' the fuel in through the brake. Nothing to screw off and put back on; the fuel can nozzle is inserted into the dry brake and dumps the fuel rapidly into the fuel tank, then the brake reseals the tank when you remove the dump can.

Diablo1 - the RMR 1125 set the best time in practice Saturday, and was running in the top 4 or 5 for the early - mid part of the race. Deeley's 1125r did not start because of problems with the dry brake.

The RMR entry was obviously fast enough to win; I would expect them to go to a chain drive which should eliminate the problems they had in this race. First race teething problems, that's all.

Court: Thanks! Can you make it to VIR?

Wademan: Last years races were broadcast on Speed TV during the weekdays. Moto ST is still catching on, but I'm hoping it will get more exposure as the series becomes more well known.

Goldrush: I remember you! We talked in the garage this weekend. It was good to see you guys too, and I hope we see more of each other. The more Buells out there the better!

Jens: Thanks! Was that you I saw on pit road hanging around with Richie Morris and his guys?

The 1125 was very fast. I'd suspect that the BMW team (N8!) and the RRW crew were a bit surprised by its speed. It led the practice for a long time (lowest lap time).

Polen was really fast on the 848 too, and of course the Aprilia. There's some seriously fast company at the top of that class, but the Buell seems up to the task. Shame about the belt, curious to see if they keep it. I'd guess not, gearing changes could get expensive.

Congratulations all to all the Buell racers there, but especially James Gang!

OT on the BMW effort... I thought this was pretty cool especially since it ended with 3rd overall (it's a follow up to my earlier post):

"Nate Kern and Richard Cooper on No. 4 R 1200 S made a late charge to take a third-place overall finish on basically a street bike. "I'm still speechless," Nate Kern said. "From our third rider getting hurt, from our top MOTO-ST bike getting absolutely destroyed. I brought my street bike to instruct at Team Hammer. Man, it's bone stock. It even has ABS and heated grips. We were 12 seconds down with eight laps to go, Richard Cooper made up the 12 seconds in just eight laps."

Still had the heated grips and ABS (switchable though)!! F'n "A"!!!! They rock!

I've just had a browse through the full entry/number list for the 2008 FX Daytona 200 and found some interesting entires listed...such as:

317 Richard Cooper (BMW) 2nd to Nate Kern in ASRA thunderbikes
487 Akira Yanagawa (remember him!) kawasaki
229 Darren James
231 Dan Bilansky
123 Dave Estok

What are the last 3 riding then?

Are these entries that are applied for but won't race, or will we actually see more Buells in the 200 this year?

One other name on the entry list took my attention and looked abit familiar too

7 Scott Russell ;)

Holy crap Matt!

What have you stumbled onto? Is this some kind of stealth campaign?

I could imagine Estok riding a different brand, but Darren James and Dan Bilansky? Have they ridden anything other than Buell lately?

Am I letting my imagination get the best of me? I could see that Buell?Harley wouldn't want to hype it too much after what happened last time, but could they really be planning on competing and this is the first we've heard about it?

Here's a MotoST report from Rick Beggs and the folks at RnR Cycles Racing. I'm sure I can post this here, since I'm the 'Under The Black Hat' that is mentioned in their report. The bike wasn't really ready, still on the belt drive and running stock body work with a modded belly pan. They added the required dry brake and comms and well.. here's the story..

Racing an American Sportbike

The RnR Repsol Racing team of Rick Beggs, Rachel Sasse, and Krishna Pribadi entered their Under the Black Hat Buell XB9R in Daytona for the SunTrust MOTO-ST race.

This would be their first ride on the creation of Erik Buell. A strategic decision was made to enter the XB9R in the middleweight class of Grand Sport Twins (GST) instead of the lightweight class of the Sport Twins (ST) since Buell pays contingency for the GST class and not the ST class. Without ever dyno testing the bike, RnR Repsol Racing already knew they were way underpowered, and also a dire 40 lbs. overweight. As the bigger XB12R is the weapon of choice in the GST class, entering the XB9R was like bringing a knife to a gunfight. The underdog team, instead, hoped to depend on riding abilities to make the grade.

What RnR Repsol Racing did not realize was just how fierce the Moto-ST competition was. Nobody was holding back and although the team members or RnR Repsol Racing had no racing time on the bike, everyone else appeared to be in the groove from the start. Through out the race, it seemed pretty evident that the Buell was severely underpowered even by the ST horsepower limits. Not only that, but the bike’s clutch felt like it was stuck in mud and the bike shifted like a John Deere tractor. With Rick handing the bike off to Rachel after their first fuel change, she had a difficult time, frustrated and upset at her performance with all her mishifts.

Once her session was up, she pulled it into pit, pulling the clutch in and downshifting into first. As she came to a halt in the hot pit box, the bike shut off, which was wrong. She yelled through her helmet to Rick as the pitcrew gassed up the bike for Krishna. Sure enough, as Krishna jumped on the bike to start it, the engine turned over, but didn’t start. It seemed to be a fueling issue. It was as if time stopped as the team waited in anticipation. “COME ON!” Rachel screamed. It was like The Little Engine That Could. The engine lulled and popped until Crawford held the throttle wide open with the starter button on and slowly but surely, the bike began to start. Still holding the starting button, with the engine rolling faster and faster, it suddenly seem to come to life! Krishna blipped the throttle and he was off.

The bike seemed to be off calibration at closed throttle, causing stalling when off the gas with the clutch in, (typically, a pit stop but sometimes on the track, too!), then almost impossible to restart. The bike soldiered on though, making it 243 miles before the fueling issue stopped the bike in lap 78. After the final results, the team ended up finishing 5th in class. The good news is that all weekend, the only part that broke or came loose was an aftermarket bodywork bracket. All in all, the bike handled well, and was mechanically able to take all the punishment Daytona could dish out.

The support RnR Repsol Racing received from the Buell factory guys, especially from Buell Engineer Matt Rasmussen and Bryan Bemisderfer, Ritchie Morris Racing, and The James Gang crew, was incredible. Roadracers in general are a very helpful and forthcoming group, but the Buell bunch was awesome, offering advice and parts when needed, and most importantly their knowledge from experience, a priceless commodity. The XB9R will only go 129 mph (GPS) with the stock gearing on the belt drive and a 180 tire. That put bike into the rev limiter in Nascar turn four, a ½ mile before the finish line. Changing to a 190 tire only gave us a few more mph before hitting the rev limiter, but the factory guys worked their magic on the ignition, raising the rev limit at least 300 rpm, giving us a top end of 141—still at the limiter by start/finish with a good drive, but within safety limits.

Derek at Speedcom bent over backwards helping us to make sure our on-track communication units were in full working order. Thanks to our MOTO-ST sponsors including Repsol, Dedicated Micros, Woodcraft, Empire GP, Under the Black Hat, and Buell. The RnR Repsol Racing Buell will be racing next at VIR next April 27th for the VIR 500K. We hope to see our fans there to root us on!

The BMW R1200S, 3rd overall, was apparently a street bike with lights and tags a few days ago. The race bike was totaled in an earlier race so they apparently took this street bike, put a stock new engine in to, set the suspension, and raced it. That's the scoop I heard.

Here's the story straight from the horse's (Nate's) mouth:

Lots of track experience represented in the forum - and you'll be impressed at the respect the beemer boyz give the Buells.

Hi Jens,
The pre-entry list closes 28 days prior to the event, so some rider changes are inevitable. Hopwever, I am surprised to see no mention of Neil Hodgson (unless my eyes deceive me) or Richard Cooper listed on there but I know they are racing in FX this weekend, although Cooper is racing in place of Thomas Hinterreiter I believe.
