I wonder if this picture previously posted on the BadWeb tells us anything?

Do you think Pegram was already debating moving to FX and looking at his options?

We all know how hard it is for American made Buell to get any (not one...count 'em) sponsors, so how did he do it with a foreign bike?

OnCycles.com
Scorpion Helmets
Barnett Clutches
Motul Oil

Yeah, Buell could learn a thing or two from Ducati (I mean besides making a well under 400 lbs. dry, 160 hp, 88 ft.lbs of torque, world class motorcycle for $14,995). See what happens while we are all sitting on our hands...

Are any of those sponsors major team sponsors? They look to me like the typical gaggle of relatively small time sponsors.

I am very much rooting for Larry and Ducati, but the above is about as far from a competitive season effort as grass seed is from filet mignon.

I agree Blake, the majority of those sponsors are what we would call 'personal' sponsors and are probably not 'up front' cash sponsors. They will supply parts/clothing/helmets, which obviuosly lessens the expense, but are unlikely to contribute to the team running expenses.

I've got "sponsors" too.

They don't save me enough money to bother.

Usually it's a 10% discount.

The REAL sponsors - Glendale and Bartels do all the maintenance and repairs and it STILL costs me about $1500 a month in direct costs.

Because somebody claims a "sponsor" you CANNOT assume a financial commitment on the part of that particular person/business.

I've given real consideration to racing with an "Anti-Sponsorship" theme. Since I pay so damned much money to go racing, I'll start supporting activities and charities that are important to me. Live music, live theatre, handicapped scuba and activities... and of course I'll plug Glendale and Bartels but I'm not going to clutter the bike with stickers for oil, sprockets, leathers, brakes, rotors, wheels, suspension or anything else that I've paid retail to get. Screw 'em!

"Jimi for got to mention this little sponsor...

That's great! Good for Ducati! I'll be rooting for them, always!

But back to the the point that was raised by Jimi: He implied rather smugly that Larry Pegram was able to easily garner significant team sponsorship in contrast to Buell's experience in FX.

But low and behold, there is no major sponsor outside of the Ducati factory for Larry.

So Jimi's smugly made point is way off base. : )

No big deal. We are all off base from time to time. : )

I don't know Blake, in my opinion Larry has a pretty good looking sponsorship package. Hotbodies and Leo Vince were his two main sponsors last year and he was able to finish the season a respectable 10th place in SuperBike on a very classy painted Honda.

"What don't you know about? "

Complement or putdown? Since I'm of the positive type, I'll take it as a complement. I would say that his level of support from Ducati this year, would easily surpass his previous support from Honda. I don't really know that much about it though.

I vote putdown.

I didn't forget Ducati...I cut and pasted the list and it didn't include them. My smugness was more about American companies supporting a foreign bike over an American one. Also, that Buell riders talk about grass roots support of an FX bike and Ducati riders do it. Desmohio will financially support their homeboy...I belong to it and know them, but they will not be a major sponsor.

No wonder it looked so off base.

Consider the sponsor wants the best bang for their buck. They won't get that sponsoring a racer on an underdog bike from a manufacturer who won't fund their own product.

JScott,

You stated "I don't know Blake,..." to which I responded "What don't you know?" It's a simple question, neither put-down nor compliment, just a simple straightforward question. I'm sorry if you felt offended by it. That was not my intention.

I'm not sorry if Jimi felt offended though. I like offending him. He owns more Buells and they have bigger engines. How can we not be offended by him! joker

Sean,

Your statement above is very misleading. Let me correct that for you.
Consider the sponsor wants the best bang for their buck. They won't get that sponsoring a racer on an underdog bike from a manufacturer who won't that doesn't perform well fund their own product.
There. That would be accurate.

Rocket, you horse's a**. Ducati gets their money from outside not from themselves. And if you actually knew anything, you would know that in the early years of Ducati the most succesful teams were not factory teams, but private ones. Man, you truly are a jerk stewing in your own poison.

Any idea how much Buell invested in getting the XBRR into production and 50 of them available with tons of spare parts and a full time staff of people dedicated to supporting the racing dealers and customers? Blake, don't ban him, shoot him!

(I think red is the appropriate color here) I don't either, how much? If it is as much $$,$$$,$$$ as I think it was, I can see why Erik would be sick that only one very privateer XBRR will be making most of the AMA circuit this year, and fewer than 10 bikes total will be racing anywhere. I know I would be sick if I were him. How does one 'splain that red ink to the big dogs at HD?

It's called taking the first step into high visibility roadracing, and it is called an investment. It is sickening to see the negativism towards Buell when they just started and have already had a start on success. Anonymous, do you speak German?

LET'S THINK ABOUT DUCATI FOR A MOMENT AND PUT YOUR COMMENT INTO PERSPECTIVE.

Ducati suffered several decades of production uncertainty under government control until in 1985, the year in which the Varese company of Cagiva finally bought Ducati.

Cagiva inherited arguably obsolete bevel drive gear engines, and the Pantah engine, all of which were air cooled desmo two valve heads. Ducati had some success in the early 80's, dominating Formula 2, but it was a series of little importance on the world stage.

In 1985 the Castiglioni brothers made it know they were looking for a new engine. An engine they could race on the world stage with. Namely Formula One, Endurance and Superbike.

Within a year of having a new 748cc engine Ducati entered the Bol d'Or 24hr, running strong in 7th until the 15th hour when a conrod bolt failed. Unlike Buells Daytona entry though, Ducati and the Castiglioni brothers didn't give up their intentions to race the world stage, never mind a paltry domestic series. No, they actually continued development through another couple of tough seasons WITH NO ONE ELSES MONEY OTHER THAN THEIR OWN, until finally they achieved major success. The rest they say is history.

As for shooting me, how about someone gives you a good kick up the arse? That's what usually works with under performers in the workplace.

I think Buell should fund a full racing effort based on unpaid taxes to (err, I mean loans from) the Italian government, then just default.

The perfect way to fund a racing effort!

Whatever people may say about Ducati and their finances, you have to admit one thing.
Ducati IS racing.
They have built up such a strong worldwide image that even people who have no knowledge of or interest in motorcycles will know about Ducati.
They have risen from near bankrupcy on a number of occasions and still produce some of the worlds most fastest and most competitive race bikes as well as attractive and sought after road machines.

The whole Italian philosophy on building motorcycles differs from the UK/US/Japanese thinking, and has moe to do with passion, soul and involvement than pure profit making. I feel sure that even if Ducati sank tomorrow the race bikes would continue like the band on the Titanic until it went under completely.

If Buell want to be considered as a real force in racing then they could do a lot worse than to follow the example set by Ducati, and will almost certainly have to plough the same kind of resources into their racing that Ducati do (which is still considerably less than the Japanese factories).

Let us not forget that it has taken close to half a century of racing, and far longer in business, for Ducati to reach this point. Ducati did not make their first bike in 1983. The had built a few more than 1000 bikes by 1995.

I think Ducatis are neat but folks lets get real here. Ten years ago Ducati was making thousands of motorcycles a year and had customers racing them all over the world. Ten years ago Buell was making 500 bikes a year and Buell bikes had competed in a mere handful of races.

Ducati did not get to this level in two years nor did they get here spending there own money.

Let's give Buell some time to build this thing. I know this is the internet age and everything we want is ours with just a few clicks but I am afraid this racing thing happens the old fashioned way; time, money, blood, sweat and tears.

Anybody who thinks Buell is doing this the wrong way has a very simple thing to do; start a motorbike company and go racing.

I think we should give Buell some time.....

But I think that it is a waste for the XB chassis, not to have a chance to prove to the world how good it really is.

Time is running fast......When Buell is ready(or might think they are..), it might be too late. When they think they are ready to race, the rest of the world might have no interest in Buell....

Buell has the XB chassis. I also think they have the brakes too....

It is time for Buell to act. Buell should either build a new motor, or buy it from some other manufacturer. Buying a motor is no shame. Have a look at :

Bimota (Using Jap & Ducati engines)has won a WSBK race

Cagiva (Using Ducati engine) has won the DAKAR race twice

Aprilia RS250 GP (Using Suzuki based engine) has won the 250cc GP class many times

KR Roberts team became competitive in Motogp, after they used the HONDA engine

I hope that Buell acts fast, before it is too late. The whole Buell racing thing, reminds me of the HD VR1000 efford. They had a good base but they had talking & planning things for too long. When they acted, their design was dated and it proved to be too late for HD and the VR1000.

After reading what happened and the fan reaction to it on this site and others, the conscious Buell owner/fan sees this as one step forward, and two steps backwards...in typical HD fashion. The typical fan is keenly aware that the "investment" was made with all of the associated media hoopla and fanfare, raising the expectations of Willie G and Co., as well as the Buell faithful. Then when it didn't pan out like the HD brass thought it should, they pulled the plug (premature evacuation...squirt!), again in typical HD fashion (talk about fair weather supporters...look within corporate, Grasshopper!).

You see, Buell owners/fans are a bit sensitive about being treated like red-headed stepchildren by the MoCo, with all of the abuse by the dealerships we have had to suffer through over the years. Then this year it looked like it was going to be different. But then first they dump BRAG, and then they pull the plug on the XBRR race team (even Erik obviously didn't see it coming, so let's not talk about a Buell decision...it was the MoCo, and most of us know it).

The "negativism" (which really isn't all THAT negative from us fans and supporters [hell, we're the good guys]...it's more like skepticism) is a product of the disappointment that YOU created with the way the project stalled after proceeding in fits and starts, and ending in the apparent abandonment of FX racing. Your open disdain for the Buell fans whom are disheartened by your actions is kinda sickening too. Maybe you are right about your not looking at this site anymore...

Hey, don't try to convince us to be patient, we didn't pull the plug, HD did.}
