J.D.

I've been thinking about this and here's my opinion.

Shooting for 200mph, within the constraints you've laid out, is most unlikely.

Given your budget, which would be 15% consumed by the entry fee alone, I've a suggestion.

Go to the TEAM ELVES website, and click on the link to the USFRA site and carefully read the 130MPH club rules.

The 130mph club has less stringent requirements, is less expensive and will give you a chance to made your maiden voyage to Bonneville and get a feel for the lay of the land and the challenges involved.

The 150MPH and Record classes would require, for instance, a 2000 spec helmet which may require a cash outlay. Full leathers are also required.

I'd set my budget aside based on travel expenses to and from, loging and meals, entry fees and some "mild" engine work. A stock S2 will not do 130MPH so, right off the bat, you have your first challenge.

You are doing the right thing by starting NOW...there will be MANY details and we'll look forward to seeing you at Bonneville!

It won't? It feels like it will. I'm happy with that.

I know a guy with a red, white and Buell S2, that lives in Rio Vista a few miles from here and he races at Bonneville.

He prefers to drive his 3-wheel car when he goes racing, and he's a member of the 200, 400, 500 and 600 MPH club.

He is preparing now for the 800 MPH club.

His car has a J-79 Phantom F4 motor with 45,000 HP that burns Shell premium unleaded gas.

Craig is his name...

Here is his website...

If it's the short little guy I am thinking of, he's a pal and has a Buell the same color as mine. I've been to visit him at Rio Vista and it's pretty gosh darn awesome.

A legend in the world of fast, and a darn nice guy to boot.

Im a little confused here you say a stock s2 wont do 130 mph. I thought it had the same motor as an x1 and i can hold mine at 140 all day long as the saying goes. Granted its not the smartest thing to do and i dont condone it but thats on the hiway. My question is,is there some other way of calculating that number that im not aware of?

A stock S2 has quite a bit less power than an X1.

When testing, I use a stopwatch velcroed to the instument panel.

GPS has pretty much made that obsolete as have Aerostitch bicycle computers.

Dyno chart for my stock S2 is here:
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show.cgi?3842/3604
Basically the S2 motor is a stock sporty motor. I know several people joined the 130 club on Fahrmayennjims S2, but his bike wasn't stock. IIRC it wasn't too highly modified either. Maybe Lightning heads and cams, and a race header/module?
So it's well within the 2G budget to get the S2 over 130.

Dave,

My mistake, Craig Breedlove did get into the 300 mph club in 1962...

With sponsorship funds from Shell Oil Co. and Goodyear, Breedlove finished his revolutionary new jet-car in 1962 and took it to Bonneville, expecting to break Englishman John Cobb's land speed record of 394 mph in an effort to bring home the record to America for the first time in more than 30 years. The new car's handling problems prevented Craig from doing that, but his sponsors hung on.

The following year, in July of 1963, he returned to Bonneville with a steerable nose wheel and a high, vertical stabilizer on the car. With this improvement, he was able to set a new, two-way official speed record of 407 mph, to become the first ever to average over 400 mph. His remarkable achievement and youthful, matinee-idol good looks made him an overnight, worldwide celebrity.

Court,

Craig is small enough for a Buell XB9S, and I have a picture of his S2 around here somewhere that I took that last time I was over in Rio Vista for an open house.

Jim, I thought maybe he just skipped it. Not sure if you get a cap if you jump from a 200+ record to a 400+ record.

He is a fellow I would love to meet.

Maybe i was wrong i think i got the S2 & S3 mixed up i was looking at the newer bike on a buell brocure that has the same moter as the x1 but im not positive because i cant find it now to check. Court can you tell me if there is a different class for the X1 mine will run 140 at least thats what the speedo says and im still climbing on the tach maybe 1000 rpms left before redline. Im not sure if that translates into more speed but it sure feels like it.

>>>Court can you tell me if there is a different class for the X1 mine will run 140

Be sure to read the classes and rules at www.teamelves.com

A stock X1 might do 140, but I think it'd be a challenge at Bonneville.

Study the rules carefully and consider a 130MPH shot to familiarize yourself with the lay of the land of Land Speed Racing.

The one thing I can assure you is that you will have a GREAT time!

You boys need to remember a few facts.First Bonneville is at 4300 feet elevation,so you lose hp there, then you have the always varying traction conditions of the salt,so factor in another 5-10% loss, and then throw in the fact that your stock speedo is,shall we say, optimistic, and your Buell X-S-B-1-2-3 whatever that runs 140 all day on PAVEMENT will be lucky to see 135mph at Bonneville. You should have seen all the dissappointed Hayabusa riders not cracking 190mph.So plan on running the 130 mph club to see how fast you really are.Be advised nitrous is NOT allowed in either the 130 or 150 club. The requirements for the 150 club are actually the same as record classes and the cost is similar. So budget minded among you ,go for the 130 club. Its definitely the most bang for the buck!
LSR racing is expensive, boys and girls.Your motor must make big hp for an extended length of time, unlike drag racing,so component strength is very important. And slippery is GOOD so it takes less hp to go fast.Good luck with the S-2.Where in N.CAL are you?

If a man were set on joining the 200 MPH club on a bike I think his best bet would be to buy a used Hyabusa and a good turbo kit - IMHO.

If anyone is thinking about building a bike to race they should set a budget, add maybe 30% to it, then throw it away because they will spend much more than they ever thought possible.

At one point in time, prior to building a bike that I planned on running at Bonneville, I sold my jeep - with the idea that I needed a more reliable car to "grow up" and become "responsible". Well, I spend that money on an S2 with a turbo charger that still is not right, although it seems to be just a battery now.

At one point in time I had friends that would call me up and be like, "hey Rocky what are you doing, why don't you hang out with us tonight?" and my reply was "um, I'm working on my motorcycle". Don't underestimate the time it takes to build the motorcycle in your head, particularly if you are as low on the learning curve as I am.

Should any of this prevent anyone from building a bike to race at Bonneville, NO! If you have interest in it DO IT.

Roc, you have to remember that to join the 200 mh club you have to go 200 mph and set a record. That raises the bar considerably

The Guzzi "Cooked Goose" LSR team has a page on the Guzzi USA web site.

They seem to enjoy bragging about knocking off Harley-Davidson Production class records. Their top record is 158.2 in the 1350 cc PPG. They apparently ran the same bike for the 1650, 2000, and 3000cc production records. ohwell What is impressive is that the Guzzi V11 Sport was turning 10K rpm. That surprised me.

Hope they enjoy it for a while. The XB9R's may soon come knocking on the PP-G door too. They didn't mention anything about their Buell competition.

Aaron, Dale... are you listening?

Blake, I'm very familiar with that page of theirs. Guess what..just got back from Canada with some new go fast stuff!

I'll keep them & the Bolts busy in 1000...I think Aaron can handle 1350! :-) I've looked at 1350 with a Sportster, but never had time to really study doing a production bike in that class.

Sydney came down to Maxton back in Oct. 2002 & took our 1000 Production record their with their smaller class bike....& all the other Production records at Maxton are owned by them. It was a soft record anyway compared to the Bonny record, which matters more to me. We'll test in the Spring & get it back while doing it. They are a great bunch of people just as the freinds I've met with Team Elves, even if they do ride eye-talian bikes!

Ya notice they don't mention the 1000 Production record at Bonny...that it was taken away......

Dale A.

Yep, exactly. I come away from their write-up wit the impression that the Guzzi guys are a little misleading/self-congratulatory. Are you saying that their Maxton records are not, as they claim, recognized by the Bonneville sanctioning bodies? When I read that my brow went all wrinkly like.

Go fast parts in Canada eh? What, you went up there to set your new crankkshaft outside overnight for a bargain rate cryo treatment? :]

Records set at different venues most certainly are not cross-recognized. You couldn't do that just due to the differences in elevation and available traction.

The two sanctioning bodies that run at Bonneville, BNI & USFRA, run under the same rules and recognize records set at each other's Bonneville events. It's my understanding that ECTA, which sanctions Maxton, uses a variation of Bonneville rules, allowing arbitrary up-classing of some sort. Plus their procedures are different because the course is shorter. There may be other differences as well, I'm not sure.

Aaron is correct, ECTA records are not recognized by SCTA/BNI or USFRA. ECTA just uses their rules. ECTA records come listed as "national" records, while SCTA/BNI records are listed as World records....at least on the pieces of paper I have from the two different bodies. I'm not sure if USFRA lists them as such or not...I'm sure Aaron does!

So, in a nutshell, I think Moto Guzzi has two Bonneville records as of now, the rest are National ECTA records.

Blake, I can get the cryo treatment right outside my door here in Ohio..I think it was warmer in Canada. I'm starting the assembly on this year's LSR bike...freeking cold in that garage!

That's what I thought. The author of the Guzzi page sure takes some liberties with his perception of reality...

Quote:

Atlanta, GA-In a continuing assault on the record book, the Moto Guzzi "Cooked Goose" Land Speed Record Team recently set three new world  marks in one day, reaching speeds in excess of 158 mph on a production model Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport. The Moto Guzzi team is now the record-holder in nine different classes, all of which were once ruled by Harley-Davidson.

The latest records were set March 23-24, 2002 at an official East Coast Timing Association (ECTA) time trial event held on the one-mile course at Maxton, North Carolina.
