Morning Jon....I shot with a 20D,300mm 2.8 with a 1.4 convertor and a 20-35 for tight shots...All Canon.Had to break out the Camera Rain Suit on Saturday though the prime lenses are pretty tight.I no longer use my 100-400 in the rain , with the sliding barrel zoom ,places like Road America and Ohio made sure of that! ..Thanks again Glitch! | ||

Glitch , These were taken with an 8MP DSLR or a digital,single lens reflex camera.The 20D is an upper end amateur/semi-pro Digital camera.My dream is to get a MarkIIs(D1)which is the top camera of the pro's.It has a resolution of 16.7 MP.....but a price tag of around 7 grand.Long way off with my budget but maybe someday I'll get a sponsor/client that puts that much faith in me! | ||

Great shots Ebear! I might add to your answer to Glitch about the question whether you were using film or digital, that these same shots could easily be taken with a 35mm or larger format camera. The secret of great shots isn't in the equipment, but in the photographer. Ebear is a great photographer with a knack for action shots...which are not easy to shoot at all! Don't ask me how I know this... It really doesn't hurt to have a press pass to get to that great location...not an easy thing to get. Ebear, you might explain how this process works to these guys. Plus, if you think these relatively low resolution shots on the web are great, you should see the photos using the whole 8 MP file. I would bet that they jump off of the page. FWIW, Film is still the best medium for photography for maximum resolution though. My Mamiya M645 negative when scanned is a file of 100 MP (compared to 8 MPs on Ebear's camera)...but digital is getting better. Mamiya's digital replacement for my camera has 21 MPs and cost $12,000...for the body only. The value of the digital is that it is very cheap to shoot, has instant viewing of the shot, you have about a 6-stop exposure latitude (in Photoshop), and your computer is your darkroom. jimidan | ||

Couldn't agree more. I have some neat equipment and couldn't begin to replicate what Ebear is doing. It takes lots of hard work and talent. I've just starting shoot NEF files and they run about 9.5MB each. The Nikon Capture NX provides TONS of latitude in what I can do in the work flow. It's going to take a while, and a couple Nikon schools in NYC, to begin to scratch the surface on the NX. Recently I've shot some film and it sure gives you an appreciation for how darn film is. | ||

The reason I asked was because I never knew you could get such quality action shots with digital. I have an "old" Olympus C-4040 Zoom. I take about a million pictures, only to have a few worth keeping. I have a CS2 PhotoShop Dark Room, still though I have a little red light just to give the right ambiance. Court, how do you find time for school? I've been meaning to take some PhotoShop classes myself, but can't seem to find the time. If you find some, please send me any extra you have!  | ||

So Court...I don't know enough about Nikon Digital....Is "NEF" Nikons uncompressed,on camera "clean and non-white balanced" file type?Canons is called "RAW" and has no internal adjustments made to it,like Nikons I'm guessing.All work is done in post.At 8mp the file comes out at 23.5 MB normally and is follwed by .CRG...My problem with "RAW" at least on this camera is that at high speed , or 'Servo" mode it will only give me JPGs but not RAW's.Not that the quality is considerably less but the more often you open a compressed file the more likely it is to lose quality from compression degradation.I've scanned negatives from my Elan7(35mm)and got files around 50-60 mb....but never 100 mb...now THAT must be some resolution Jimidan!..The 645 negative is my favorite size....always lusted after a Hasselblad ,Mamiya or Pentax 645...my friend at work here uses a view camera...I'm not sure the size but the negative looks as big as a 5x7 print! By the way , did I meet you there and just NOT know who I was talking to?I was looking forward to that but didn't have your ph. number to call!Oh well , maybe you'll come join us at Laguna next year?..I few minutes ago I paid the $1000 bucks for the spots next year...should be better than THIS year!!Our friend at the track says the spots behind us will be reserved now so were going for more space for Buellers!!Have a great day and I'll be looking for more pics posted by you all!! I completed the NYU Construction Program in 2004 and am currently a candidate for the Columbia Master's Degree. When you start with an little intellectual fire-power as I have you need to add all the cognitive octane booster you can! The Nikon format is called RAW as well and the file format is.NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) It allows all sorts of white balance and EV corrections in the post-prod portion of the work flow. Sometime when you get near NYC, let me know and I'll give you the "Photo Capital of the World" tour. I shot REAL FILM at Daytona and when Erik and the band were here a couple weeks ago and the real film, in comparison to digital, is awesome. I'm struggling now with the "would an F5 body do any better than my $200 Minolta body?". Frankly, at my skill level , I'm betting on "no". By the way, I got a couple doozies last weekend (totally non-motorcycle) I'll have to post sometime. | ||

Court....I've shot with you before,your skill level is way high....only Camera bodies don't add much to non-sport photography....lenses DO though!!I'd bet both bodies would be hard to discern by looking at the resulting picture... And I would LOVE to get that tour!!!only it would take quite a while cause I'd make you show me upstate too....being from Vermont I KNOW what that ares holds!! remember these??          | ||

Very nice pix, good technique and good eye. Here a few race pix I like. All shot with film, some by my wife, using an Olympus OM4. Mostly 200 speed Kodak print film so the resolutions and color depth are far below what you would get from 200 speed slide film. http://www.davegess.com/isle_of_man/ For racing a certain minimum level of equipment is needed to get good tight action shots, you also need a spot that allows you to get good pictures, nice clean background, good light etc. Most important part is the Photog's eye. You have to SEE the picture before you can make it. (Note I said MAKE not TAKE. Photographers MAKE pictures, other take pictures. Big difference.) Unfortunaly for me Olympus does not make a digital camera that really will allow me to use my exisitng lenses. I particularly would regret giving up my 21mm so I will soldier on with film for a while yet. A 35mm Kodachrome slide will easily yield a 80/100 MB file size. The 4x5 negative I used for this http://www.davegess.com/buelhist/rw750/RW75CHS.htm was scanned at 300 dpi, 10"x14" and the file size is over 300MB, that yields a very nice 11x14 print. Using the original negative I could print a something perhaps 4 times that size that would look good. A scan to produce that would have to be well over 1000MB. Digital is great, and all you need for most uses BUT I still like the look of a Kodachrome projected to about 6 feet high in a dark room. I haven't seen any digital that looked like that. | ||

I too go to school all the time, but mine is boring ol' IT stuff, just to keep my creds up to date, that leaves little time for the school I want to attend. Most important part is the Photog's eye. I have the desire, and am trying all the time. Kodachrome projected to about 6 feet high in a dark room. I got the bug from my Dad, I remember well his dark room, all the equipment, and chemicals. But, being the rebellious kid that I was, I was not interested back then. Once digital became a viable medium, I hopped on board. He still carries a camera, only now it's digital. That's a good thing, he never was good at keeping a tidy dark room, there was a fire once... I've been drooling over the newest Rebel SLR... | ||

I have the desire, and am trying all the time. I always tell students, look at pictures, paintings, art of any form and try and figure out why you like it or dislike it. Good palces to look are Sports Illustrated, the high end fashion magazines, (you do get some funny looks when you pull the women's mags off the rack) National Geo etc. When looking at the picture try to see what the light was doing and what compositional (sp?)elements are included. For practice take one element of a good photo, say texture, and shoot photos of nothing but texture. Then shoot frames. By breaking it down into small chunks you can help yourself see better. Don't leave your neighborhood to do this. Great photos happen in your living room, you just don't notice them. Imogene Cunningham, one of my favs, spent many years raising a family and shot mostly pictures around her house and yard. These are some of her best despite traveling the world on assignment before and after the kids. One other tip, when the magic hour hits, the hour or so before sunset or after sunrise, take pictures of just the light. No matter how pedestrian the scene the light can make magic.
