Somehow I'm thinking Perkins has already been participating as much as he/they care to by lurking. Such is racing. Now I'm wondering if it'd be possible to add a small section to the teamelves site, password protected, with certain disclaimers and non-disclosures, whereby those supportive and interested can read and learn and help in some small way. Sort of a "behind the curtain" backroom corner so to speak. Wouldn't even need to be a link on the page into it, just need to know the address to get there for those granted access. There would have to be a fairly strict no-crossposting rule in effect. And hopefully a little "approved leakage" of non-critical info for the general public and spectators and press to know at least a little of what's up. Anyway, just some thoughts from a backyard mechanic with a couple of tools and a little bit of esoteric knowledge on unrelated matters that may or may not apply to any discussion in particular. |

Mikej, It's doable, but I bet it wouldn't be used. I really don't think any more knowledge would be imparted than it would be here and how many of us really need another spot to browse? Josh Teamelves IT nerd #2 |

You're probably right. And I guess that if someone were prepping a bike they could always just email someone with questions about something specific or general. |

Hmm, my RS has the RevTech heads and (apparantly)lots of power, plus runs a chain (for easy & cheap gear changes). hmmmm |

Is there a category of carrying a passenger in speed runs? Could be a whole new category. Anyway, that RS could be a sweet ticket out there on the Flats. |

>>>>Is there a category of carrying a passenger in speed runs? If there WAS, I'm betting it was eliminated after what I did to the editor of Motorad at the secret intro of the 1998 S1WL. HD, in a rare moment, gave me permission to take a passenger on a lap of the BattleTrax course set up behind the East Troy Grade School. We had a BALL.....the guy was screamin' "faster, faster" in the best English he could summon. The effects, on ground clearance, of having an extra 180# (compressed suspension) on the back of an S3-T make the event (yes, I ground the bags open) much more spectacular than it actually was. The other "two up moment" was on a STEEP hill near Herrman, MO with a...er....uhv... rather "substantial" lady on the back (i.e. behind the vertical line through the rear axle) of THE S-2. It was an exercise in alternate throttle and rear brake application that got me recognized as a far better rider than a casual oberserver of the PURE LUCK would have guessed. Ditto the stunt with Keith Ulicki's RR-1200 before a large crowd! Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes ! Court |

If anyone is interested in one of these posters, you can buy one by contacting: Laser Imaging - Scott Soto 3215 W. Solano Dr. South Phoenix, AZ 85017 (602) 841-8106 No part number or anything like that, but I think you can just call'em and describe it and say "like the ones you sold to Aaron" and they'll figure it out. They run about $100 a copy, framed. Very nice looking. I have no relationship (financial or otherwise) with Laser Imaging, I'm just passing this along. They're just an outfit that took pics of various vehicles at the World Finals and came around to each team's pit peddling them. |

Hey Iam setting my S2 up for the salt flats it's stock with Nitrous. Iam just going for the 200 mph club doesn't matter what class. Can I put a larger spocket on the back for higher speeds. Iam working on the bodywork right now to get it more Aerodynamic. Any Help Or is this a losing effort?? This is a budget try at the 200mph club Iam looking to stay under the 2000.00 range but will end up running whatever I end up with for the fun of it. |

Evil,... Let's see, Aaron's 100 incher with NO2 got a one way trip high of 208 mph and a 2 way record of almost 203 mph. How much nitrous do you think you'll have too run on your "stock" 74 incher to get there ??? I guess it's POSSIBLE ??, but remember that Aaron's 100 incher was the first pushrod bike to break 200mph in the 1650 class or lower,... And you want to break 200 on a 74 inch,.... I've changed my mind,... it's not possible.... |

I thought it was more aerodynamics to get to the 200mph mark---If it is a joke let me know what direction I should go in. Iam asking these questions before I start buying things that I don't need. Looking for help from some guys that look like they have plenty of experience. My inexperience and just out to look for more fun on my bike has led me to ask a few crazy questions. Iam not a mechanic but I did put the nitrous on myself I have a stock S2 but the bodywork is by aerotech and it should help quite abit. Iam just going for speed and not trying to make it into any certain class. I've got a call into Brian Nallin and he's helping me with what I can do. This is my Winter project and Winter has definitely arrived here in Cal - If you didn't read the last part of my Note it was a quest for 200 but whatever I end up with would just be for fun---I dont have a bank roll to get to serious. |

Two grand is not enough. By the way, most people generally use a smaller rear sprocket to get a higher top speed. bighairyralph |

Go ahead and run it, you'll have the time of your life. Listen to Brian and follow his advice, he knows what is needed. Even with the slickest full fairing you will need tons of HP to acheive 200mph. A fully prepaired 74ci race engine would be stressed to acheive it, a stock 74 motor (IMHO) would not handle the stress of the amount of NO2 needed to acheive it. Look at the current 1350 records at Bonneville,.... Don't let this discourage you though, you'll have great time racing reguardless of speeds acheived. |

I guess that was my Point I want to have fun #1. Go as fast as I can #2 and try and not blow anything up. I think like you said Brian is supposed to be the guru on this nitrous and I would like to build mine up to atleast handle the largest nozzle. I love this web site and I thank all for giving your two cents. I will post a picture when I get it painted. I can do the technical and electrical work but would like someone in Bay Area to help me with the heads and cylinders and any bottom end requirements that Brian has. Thanks J.D. |

How big is the "largest nozzle"? Sounds to me like you'd need to go through the bottom end and at least balance and replace the rods along with the new pistons and cams you'll want. We passed up your first two grand a very, very long time ago If you just want to run for fun, have fun. The 135 and 150 club are cheap and fun. Try them first and then decide if feel like dumping the loads of cash it takes to mount a serious speed effort after you have a little experience. bighairyralph |

J.D., I think that's TERRIFIC that you'd like to participate in Salt Flats racing. I've done a bunch of different kinds of racing in the past, and the Salt Flats stuff is pretty cool. Very grassroots, not real commercialized at all, and yet it has a high enough profile that you can get people to help you. And, with only 3 events a year, it doesn't consume your life like so many other kinds of racing. One of the things you have to remember about this kind of racing is that to set a record, the motor has to operate near redline for a minimum of 6 miles (2 back to back 3 mile passes). That's pretty brutal, especially at the power levels it takes to set a record. Dial up the power without beefing up the insides, and I guarantee you'll be taking it home in a box. Even with the very best stuff in the motor, durability is a huge challenge. 200 is a lofty goal. With an Air-Tech body, you need roughly 215hp at the rear wheel to get there. That's not just a guess, that's based on real data I have on that body. To get into the 200 club, you have to not only break 200 on the average of a pair of passes, but you have to set a record in the process. A stock displacement S2 with nitrous would run in a class called MPS-PF 1350cc. The record in that class is currently held by Don McCaw, it's around 192, so yeah, if you broke 200 you'd be in the club. He did that with a Buell RR1200, which has some damn slippery bodywork, more slippery than the Air-Tech stuff in fact. Don is one hell of a smart guy, an outstanding engineer, and to get the bike to that speed was a great effort, the record has stood a long time. It was a "best of everything" engine, punched out to 1340cc, and he was running nitromethane. Hopefully all this has given you a feel for the size of the challenge. I don't want you to be discouraged, I'd really like to see you out there participating. There is one opportunity that comes to mind. The 1350cc M-PF record is wide open, i.e. there's no record. If you lose the fairing on the bike, you could run there. I'd sure be cautious with the nitrous level though if I were you, until you have a chance to beef up the motor's internals. Brian is my close friend and partner, and yes, he is quite knowledgeable on nitrous, in fact he is the one who taught me about it. Best of luck and hope to see you on the salt next September! |

Aaron, What kind of fuel did/will you use in your LSR attempt? Pump gas, or racing fuel? I work for Chevron Phillips Chemical, and our Specialty Chemicals Group makes Phillips 66 Racing Fuel. Maybe I can swing some kind of sponsorship? Jeff |

Jeff, racing fuel is supplied at the salt flats. ANY "gas" record is required to use that gas and the tank is sealed. It's "legal" to use other brands of race gas, but then you are considered to be running "fuel" (same as nitrous, alcohol, etc) bighairyralph |

Jeff, I appreciate the offer, but changing fuels is a new development path in the fuel classes, and like BHR says, anything but ERC is illegal in the gas classes. Fuel cost is down in the noise in the overall scheme of things, so sponsorship there wouldn't be a big help. Bottom line, it's hard to justify a switch. But thanks! |

What ERC gas do you prefer Aaron, same on/off the bottle?, do you run the same in both blast and the S2/RR 100 inch? |

Ouch..... ERC used to have a reference from the SCTA/BNI site on their different fuels and intended uses but I can't seem to find it. VP fuel's site offers some good info though. |

One more thing Knievel. Don't forget about safety stuff. The bike and your riding gear must pass tech inspection. There's a lot there to take up that $2000 budget of yours. The 150 club has less bike prep work to race but is still intricate enough to stump a few people. The 130 is basically ride what you brung, but still needs to pass tech like you would need to pass state inspection. Get the rule book and take a look at how much detail there is to just the safety aspect for running an LSR class. |
