I am going to do some runs next weekend at a local 1/4 mile strip. Does anyone have a recommendation on getting a good launch on the drag strip. I am afraid that a with a 52 inch wheel base I will be found laying on my back with the bike on top...

Tony, just got back from drag racing last night! For an XB, you are definitely wheelie limited in 1st and 2nd gear. For a totally stock ride height XB chassis, I like to start with the right foot on the ground, and the left foot on the shifter. It makes a huge difference if you reverse the linkage for GP shift (upside down shift) so up shifting consists of dabbing the shifter down. Much easier than trying to shift up with the bike wheeling and out of shape. try releasing the clutch gently and applying throttle at the same time. You probably won't come close to WFO in 1st gear, more an exersize in wheelie control. Sometimes short shifting into 2nd during the initial wheelie will help. Start out slow and conservative and work your way up to more aggressive launches as you get comfortable. You will be fine!

Have fun!

Hey Tony, I would launch my 12R from about 2300 to 2500 rpm and roll on the gas easy and slip the clutch at the same time while laying on the airbox. I would shift into second as hard as I wanted to. I have a stock 12R with a drummer installed. No race ecm or tfi yet. Good luck and start out easy until you get the hang of it. Brupska

Well ... I am running an S1 with wheelie bars and a strap and strut now .. but before that I ran it how I rode it there .. and my S1 is putting more power down than an XB (putting to the ground what an XB12 makes at the crank - both hp and torque)

Take your first couple runs 'slow' - not meaning run it slow .. but start off by rolling into the throttle and feathering the clutch .. lean forward .. what you have to do is find that 'wheelie point' and not pass it .. find that balance point over the first few runs .. you will learn quickly how hard you can launch over those first couple runs ..

Make sure you shift around 65-6800 ... and most important - HAVE FUN !!!

I am launching my bike with my shift light on, just given you a idea what kinda RPMs I am launching at. Like Tattoodnscrewd said TAKE IT SLOW and learn as you go. I have been doing this a while
