Hey, Just about to pull the trigger on a new starter purchase when I learned about the compensator being a possible contributor to starting issues and starter failures. Can anyone shed some light on how to troubleshoot a compensator? |

If your talking about a compensator sprocket on the crank, in the primary, then that's not your problem because Sportsters and Buells don't have one. Only the Big Twin engines use compensators. |

Thank you Tootal, I've not heard of that before. I though he meant the bike is compensating for something else! |

The compensator takes out the surge from when the cylinder fires. It's basically a dampner. That's why the big twins can run at such low rpm's without feeling jerky and we Buell riders need to keep it up around 3000 rpm. There's been many big twin riders that switch to a Sportster or Buell and complain about the jerkyness at 2000 rpm. |
