there's the guy on facebook that 3d prints the housing and puts the led pods into them and a guy on ebay that does the same. anyone have any insight on the ebay one? his electrical design sounds less complicated but the housing finish doesn't look as nice. anyone know if the headlight guard still attaches to these?

the guy on facebook has pictures up showing the beam pattern. the headlight housing on my uly is burnt inside and even with hids the output is poor. my lightning has the stock housing with phillips lumiled led bulbs and it's great but at the cost of a new stock housing and then $100 bulbs i think this is the better bet. i think i'm going to order the set on ebay and give them a shot.

That looks pretty sweet.
I am keenly interested in how this turns out.

The Marcel guy did a thread on BuellXB as well. I don't FB so I don't know what he charges, but it seems like he cares enough to use decent stuff. I think I'd lean that way if you like the look.

The E-bay LED's can't be that nice from a cost standpoint alone. I have a very similar (cheap) single 5" LED headlight on the STT and I hate it. Dim, extreme pinpoint beam, and flickers. YMMV.

Aren't they ripping off the Daymaker HD lights? $$$

either way it looks like both guys are putting in ebay led lights in 3d printed housings. The guy on facebook can add a [photo sensor that turns on the headlamps at night and will only run a runing lamp during the day but i think i like the simplicity of the ebay one just hopefully being more simple and just wired like a normal light with less to fail. the ebay seller does mention it is wired to run both high and low with high beam on. doesn't matter to me as both my Buells have that mod already done.

it is really bright. lights up the road really well. my olny complaint is that high beam doesn't add much light, just a small amount more light a bit higher. really good light tho for the money. I think i'm going to order another one for my lightning.

Is high beam really needed? When I converted to 35w HIDs I noticed that I could have upgraded the low beam only because I no longer needed high.

not so much but i like to keep my beams low and then use high for the trail.

I'm tempted to grab one of these too - the reflector from my low beam is badly worn away (due to heat I guess?) and the light output is terrible. The LED one from eBay is about 25% more than a brand new stock one from H-D here in New Zealand, so for that small price difference I think it's worth it.

I'm not worried about high beam as I've fitted a pair of PIAA LP530 driving lights that come on when high beam does.

The ebay unit posted above doesn't seem to be available any more, but a quick search there turned up a bunch of units now being made in China out of printed aluminium (like this one https://www.ebay.com/itm/Halo-Kit-For-Buell-LED-He adlight-Module-for-Lightning-XB9S-XB12S-Models-03- 2010/362881402537?hash=item547d6ac6a9:g:VHwAAOSwVY NeHY5S)

Looking at it I like the finish more than the "plastic" printed lights, but I'm not sure the LEDs are as good as the Lightning LEDs unit - it just seems like a bit more engineering effort has gone into the ones on Facebook, but that could all be in my head.

Has anyone tried the "new" ebay aluminium units?

Alex,

A quick question for you on your light purchase. What's your opinion on the mounting points. I noticed that the mounts on the Facebook unit are really beefy. They look like they will hold up well to vibration over time. How are yours doing? Do you get any shaking in your headlight that wasn't there with the stock unit? do you feel the mounting tabs could or should be stronger, or do you believe them to be sufficient?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Cheers!

Alex (my name as well)

I can't believe anyone would consider buying ANYTHING that says "made in China"...

Thats a cute sentiment and all, but the needle has swung so far that direction, there's not always a choice.

I would happily say that your sentiment is gaining popularity and is changing things for the better. The needle will hopefully find a mid-point in future times.

I believe the rapid growth of accessible 3-D printing will accelerate that process greatly and massively change this world. Not an overstatement.

My 3-d printer is one of the best time/material investments I have made, if I need to design custom parts/mounts/brackets and/or what not for different projects, print them out of cheap PLA plastic, test fit - alter - re-print and then if it's what I want I'll make it out of better material or send the file out to another company to make it for me. Don't have to make it out of expensive material just to see that I missed something and need to alter it or change my mind and be out of high dollars.
