Has anyone replaced the Uly wheels with lighter wheels from other models? My Uly is lowered and all pretenses of off road riding are gone so wondering if there is any appreciable gain from the swap. I know the theory, looking for the reality. |

Reality is, I believe, less than a half-pound per wheel (and color options). All they did was add a "rim strip" for strength. If you've ever put a tube in a laced wheel, you know the rubber rim strip that goes around the rim to protect the tube from the spoke nipples. Same thing in the Uly wheels, just made from some aluminum. |

Thats a factoid I never knew! Thanks! I assumed ALL XB, Uly, and 1125 were identical with the exception of the 3-bearing late Uly and the coating on the red-stripe CR's. Am I missing anything else besides color options |

Uly is the only one that's physically different, with the "reinforcing strip" for ADV use. 1125 rears are the same as XB rears, just turned around "backwards" for the other-side belt placement. XB and 1125 are identical physically, other than color (and the 1125 having the rear mounted backwards). ANY of them can be had with either a 2-bearing or a 3-bearing rear, it doesn't have to be the heavier Uly wheel to have 3 bearings. That was an all-bikes 2010 update. The CR wheel is just a color option, it's a textured powdercoat instead of a smooth/gloss finish. |

I have a 06 xb12x with 2010 non-uly wheels and have not noticed any difference in the handling with those lighter wheels |

The front brake rotors from xb, 1125s, RS, RX, and SX will all fit each other. |

The handling difference from lighter wheels should really not be noticeable during road cornering at reasonable speeds. At least not unless the wheels are a WHOLE lot lighter. Beside being able to adjust for smoother suspension action, light wheels aid rapid steering changes, such as in really quick direction changes. |

I installed XT suspension at the same time I put on the lighter “non-XB12X” wheels. Handling response to input is quicker, but it’s hard to say how much (if any) is due to the wheel change. |

I doubt any one of us rides at a skill level high enough to notice the minor difference in weight of the wheels. Odds are if you do, you already run the race only magnesium wheels. |

thanks again guys. Just saved me $800 USD. Actually the weight of the tires may make more of a difference. Those Dunlops weigh a ton and all rotating mass. |

The Pirelli Angels come in 2 versions for the rear too. |

"Those Dunlops weigh a ton and all rotating mass" Actual tire weight is something I've looked for and actually a very hard thing for me to find. Where did you see that? |

Just from experience Shoggin and not all that scientific. I bought a set of Q3's last year and was amazed at how heavy they felt. I did not get a chance to compare other street tires, but when i switched from Dunlop slicks to Pirelli on my race bike i could not believe how much lighter the Pirellis felt. I am assuming there is a similar difference in street tires but have not confirmed. |

I have wheels on my Uly that came off a Firebolt, mostly because the bearing seating of the rear Uly wheel was damaged. It handled incredibly well before and still handles incredibly well now. I think you'd have to ride bikes with the different setup back to back to really notice a difference. |

I happen to have an unmounted set of Q3+ for the EBR and a postal scale at work. 1+1=? I'll find out today at least 1/2 that mystery |

A large part of tire "feel" is delivered by the tire's profile. Some tires are more resistant to turning while the bike is mostly upright but then become more responsive as lean angle increases. Other tires are opposite. I've found this to be a pretty valid comparison between Dunlop and Pirelli sport tires. My preference has been for the feel from Dunlops. I raced Michelin's in about 02-03, they were great when upright or at full lean but did not deliver enough feedback(for me)at moderate lean angles. |

Don't forget tire pressure...and compound. All HUGE factors, along with profile, in how a tire "feels". Michelin has actually changed the silica content in the PR5's (started with the PR4's I think), to give more of the "slimy" feel to replicate race tire feel. |

Played with the postal scale today: New Q3+ 190 rear 14.45lbs, the 120 front is 10.3lbs Worn to 40% Pilot Power3 180 rear 12.05lbs Worn to 40% front Rossi 8.25 lbs Brand new front wheel (no rotor) 8.85lbs New rear wheel with rotor only 13.50lbs Complete 2 bearing Uly rear wheel assy with TKC-80 34.75lbs Complete matching front 22.35lbs I love the pilot powe5's on the STT. The most rock solid tire all the way to the nipples on the edge, 5000 hard, fast miles and still look new with a great profile! |
