I have the primary cover off (for starter removal). The gasket (primary cover gasket that is) stayed on the primary, completely intact. I had removed covers on other bikes before and I remember as half of it would stay on the cover and the other half on the crankcase, but this one still sits on the primary like new. So the question - do I have to peel it off the primary (it actually stuck on pretty good, not sure if it was glued on what) and use a new gasket, or just put the cover back on with the old gasket? If this was my bike I'd clean the gasket surface facing you, clean the primary cover itself, put on the lightest possible coat of Hylomar you can and slap it back together using a torque wrench. I don't have it memorized but I'm pretty sure there's a pattern to follow. The correct way is a new gasket (obviously). | ||

Thanks Steve, so basically if that was your bike you would've reused the gasket? I am kind of leaning towards the same, can't quite see the difference between the old gasket and the new one. By light Hylomar you mean a gasket sealant, right? We don't seem to have Hylomar, but we have some gasket sealants (NOT gasket makers) by Permatex at the local hardware store. Thanks again! | ||

Hylomar is a sticky gasket sealant. A trace of RTV sealant should do it. If it's stuck on there I'd just clean it and reuse it. If I was working at a dealership I'd sell you a new one! | ||

Thanks Steve! Apparently Harley dealers should carry that Hylomar blue product - part number 99653-85. Will stop by the dealership tomorrow. | ||

Just put my primary cover back on a few weeks ago... the gaskets still looked good so I cleaned all the surfaces and smeared the thinnest film possible of hi-temp black rtv on the metal surfaces. I've put about 900 miles on the bike not a seep or a drip anywhere. Cheers, Claude | ||

I've been using Dow Corning 111 on my gaskets for years now. It's a non hardening silicone o-ring lubricant/sealer. It's real thick and I put it on both sides of my gaskets. When you remove any parts with gaskets they just peal off and I reuse them many times and never have leaks. As long as none of your gasket is stuck to the outer primary cover then by all means reuse it. Hylomar is great stuff also and I would use it over any hardening RTV silicone or next time you will be spending some time cleaning surfaces. | ||

I have always reused case gaskets when they are undamaged, on my own bikes. This: http://gasgacinch.com is the stuff to use for sealant. | ||

I remember making gaskets out of cereal boxes. And using Permatex to seal it. | ||

R.D. also used a matchbook cover to set his point gap and sawdust to quiet a noisy transmission. | ||

I did set points on an RD250 with a matchbook. Cleaned the plug gap with the strike on part too. I wasn't crooked enough to put sawdust in the tranny before selling a car. | ||

Peel it off, clean the gasket and mating surfaces with brake cleaner and reuse the gasket. There is no glue or any additional sealant required. I reused all my current primary gaskets at least 4 or 5 times already with no any leaks problem. You can reuse all that black stuff on aluminum foil style gaskets until that black stuff will fall out of aluminum base. (Message edited by Tpehak on September 10, 2019) | ||
