Hey guys, I did this mod on my 06 Useless and it worked great. I've just recently fixed my stator and for some reason when I went to hook my wiring back up under the seat my switch quit working. For the life of me, I cannot find the original post from the guy that gave me the pointers on how to set that up so I can't go through and trouble shoot my original setup. I have a terrible time trying to search for anything on this site. If you're out there, give me a hollar! Thanks, Claude |

You’re looking for Etennuly, aka Vern. He’s the originator of that mod. Basically your switch needs to provide a path to ground. The fan always has power to it. |

Cut the blue wire, hook up to switch to ground from the fan side. Not the ECM side. Does that jog your memory? |

You should be looking for where you modified the blue wire. |

Thanks guys... been a little busy but when I replaced my battery and after putting in the new stator, I couldn't remember exactly how everything had to wire back up. This helps a ton. Cheers! Claude

Yes it is the blue wire. I intercepted it from the ECM to run through a switch to ground. I'm due a new fan for mine again. Runs good cold. Ride for a while it slows down a lot. When hot last week it would not come on. First fan made over 30,000 + miles. This second one the same. When I get a new fan and hook it up this round, I may hook it again to the ECM. While still leaving my ground switch operational. See if that works to maybe put the red light out. |

Etennuly, I connected the ECM (fan) bypass switch like that on my '06. That allowed the ECM to run the fan after engine shut down. However, the red check engine light would stay on when the bypass was on. Though, sometimes it would not stay on... never figured out why that was, before trading it last year for a MV Turismo. |

Honestly curious. Why? Is it supposed to run colder running the fan longer than the ECM temp settings are set for? |

Can't speak for others here. But the fan switch bypass cured the random skip spark condition on my '06. |

It was all an effort, after exhaustive testing and research, to keep the engine a few degrees cooler to keep it from going into prevent mode. It would go to flashy light -run-skip- reduced speed until load removed or it cooled down a bit. With the fan running all of the time it helped. |

You can just lower the fan start temperature using Bluetooth dongle. Set it to room temperature if you want it runs all the time. But what I noticed fan sucks battery energy at idle speed. |

Checking the "speed-based-fan-control" option on ECMDroid will do exactly what you want.It will make the fan run constantly, but shut off (if under temp) slower than about 15mph to save the charging system at idle. Weird your bikes run hot enough to get to parade-mode though, I have done track days in Florida during the summer and never got an XB hot enough to get to engine protection mode. Thats 20 minutes of the fastest riding you can do every hour, all day. in 100+* ambient. Heck, I just went on a hard riding trip with buddies on faster bikes and was WFO for minutes at a time on the XB to keep up over 100mph for long stretches In the desert (about 100* ambient there too) and never a hiccup on the ol' girl. Thats even running a little lean to get some additional range on a tankful! I'm thinking there might be cooling issues with your bike that need to be addressed instead of band-aided? Do you have thunder thighs blocking the path of hot air from the sides of the seat? LOL, but serious |

Fan switch thing has been great for me... I'm a Florida dweller too. I plan on looking at how to better route the air flow under the seat. Thinking about drilling some lightning holes in the sub-frame and re-locating the ECM to behind the battery along with a couple of other idears... we'll see. Love the bike! Breakfast ride with my Dad(83 years old) on Saturday... then went for a 200 mile loop around Lake George on my own. Ran flawlessly.

Fan logic was changed with the 08 model year. It could be tuned. Earlier models were not tunable. My bike ran perfectly the first 10,000 miles. I did several extended 100 mph runs above 80 degrees F. Then it suddenly changed. 70 degrees at 70 mph became its limit. Several of us, all over the World got this issue at nearly the same time. The story would go on for days if started. The list of what we tried, the lack of dealer help, the parts we threw at them went on and on. The right side scoop comfort kit was made for this problem, as was the tunable ECM. Hot wiring the fan kept many of us from selling the bikes. Lots of Ulys were sold because of this issue. My bike runs so close to NOT overheating that the difference between a nice 80 mph ride or 55 in run skip mode, can be the difference in wind drag sitting up versus laying down out of the wind. PITA fixed with fan on after warm up. |

Agreed 100%... had the bike for a year. Loaned it to a buddy that road it to Key West and back(from Orlando area). He got stuck in endless Miami traffic during the hottest time of the year, nearly melted the battery(kidding) but since then, anything over 70ish for about 15 minutes puts the bike in limp mode. Went through all kinds of settings, two ECM's and a new fuel pump(oddly enough) till I read about Etennuly's fix. Ran out to the garage almost immediately, hot wired the mod and did a one hour 90mph run on I-95 without any issues. Been great ever since. I'm ok with that... haha!

I am only guessing here. Head temp. sensor gone wonky after being cooked? |

Nope. Went through all the sensors and connectors including replacing a few... |

RD, we had literally a World wide team of flashy light run skip engineer mechanic types who spent two summers trying to find a cure. Trust me on this..... You won't likely think of anything we hadn't tried. Hundreds of otherwise great running 06, 07 machines were having the issue. The only thing I see now that we had not tried is replacing the entire wiring harness. Most that I recall and now realize, had the problem start after a major super hot event. Could be compromised /melted wires. Did you see my right side tail pipe? |

Claude, nice looking bike! I still like the look.
Might be able to see exhaust pipe by tensioner pulley area. That was to release heat in the pipe. One of the hundreds of things I tried. |
