The servo is fine, the door in the muffler is hitting something. I can pull the cable about 1/4" and I can hear the valve make a hard stop. Is there a known way to get to the valve so see if it can be freed? |

pretty sure you have to remove the muffler to get to the valve from the outside, and maybe a fiber optic camera up the tailpipe to see what's going on, but I can't remember if the valve is a linear run from the exhaust port, or doubled back. I'm guessing it's rusted and a chunk of rust is blocking movement. You may get some satisfaction by removing the muffler and working the valve back and forth with the muffler at different orientations. Of course it may just be a stone wedged in the apparatus on the top of the muffler. |

The mechanism is sealed. The valve cannot be accessed without cutting the muffler open. |

From the outside, with the muffler still installed, it does not look to be serviceable. I was hoping that there was something that I was not noticing. Within the range of movement, the valve moves freely, just that it hits a hard stop at about 10 degrees. Nothing is wedged or jammed on the outside, I can see the entire cable sheave from both sides. I've seen a few mufflers on eBay in the $200 to $250 range. |

Like Teeps said, you have to cut the muffler open to access the valve. Just to be sure, if you loosen the cable adjustment all the way, I believe there is enough room to sneak your fingers and a small wrench above the muffler to remove the cable from the bracket. Then you could pull on the cable to see if it’s the valve not moving rather than the cable being bad. As far as exhaust flow, the muffler has three pipes inside. Normal flow goes through all three in series. The valve is near the intake on pipe number one. When open it directs flow from near the intake right into the beginning of pipe three and then out. The valve is a simple butterfly style. From the cutaway picture in the manual it looks like there is quite the return spring on the bottom below the valve. I would almost suspect this as the culprit of your problem since it would seem that all the crap would settle to the lowest point. That price range seems reasonable if they’re in good shape. Just remember that the outlet on the Uly is different than the other XB’s in case the ad doesn’t specify model. |

Careful with Ebay. I've seen some seriously garbage mufflers on there for the same amount of money. Like holes rusted right through bad and still demanding north of $100. I miss when they were everywhere for $50. |

Yalp, $50 without rust. I found a take off on a back shelf at a dealer. They gifted it to me as a warranty item for my rusty one. |

The valve's shaft has developed excessive endplay that allows the valve to catch on something. If I turn the muffler upside down, or even stand it on end, the valve will move freely once 'lifted'. If the valve is allowed to settle down it will only move ten degrees or so. It feels as if the valve butterfly may have worn a notch in the valve body. Even with a wrench on the end of the shaft, it hits a very hard stop. I could grind off the welds that hold the nut to the end of the shaft and work out some sort of shim arrangment, but instead I have a Buelltooth XB-ST (Super Trap) and matching ECM map on the way. By the way, the stock muffler weighs 18 lbs. |

Installing the Buelltooth Supertrap exhaust. My not-so-new bike seems to differ from the exhaust building jig a bit so it is taking longer than expected. Nice quality parts with the new muffler. I hope that it is not too loud. Saving 13 lbs will be nice. All of the new parts weighed 5 lbs. The 18lb figure for the OE unit does not include the mounting hardware. |

It's on the bike and with all twelve discs in place is a fair bit louder than stock. I am going to run with it for a while and see if it continues to seem too loud. I'm not noticing people stare at me as I ride by, so I do not think that it can be too bad, but I may be the one who finds it annoying. Time will tell. The tune file sent along installed properly and the bike seems to run fine. Warm up idle starts at about 1800 rpm, which seems a bit high to me. For the first start up I had forgotten to run the TPS setting procedure. That produced some interesting results. Setting the TPS fixed that. It is odd to walk up to the bike and not see the huge belly tank hanging there. |
