As you know from my other thread, I recently installed a new 220cca battery to solve low voltage and startup problems I've had. Bike turns over and starts well now. Took the thing out for a test ride at about 38 degrees (f) today and noted that the fan was seriously whining, as in turning way faster than it should. As cold as it was outside the bike barely got warm and the cylinder heads were almost cool enough to touch. In the past I've only heard the fan whizzing at that high speed when I turned off the bike and it was very hot. When I pulled into the garage I left the engine running (fan stopped) and checked the battery/VR voltage and it was 14.4V (as I expect). thoughts as to why the fan was screaming during the ride? It is an IDS racing ECM. |

May be it is not turning faster. Possible bearing of fan is going south? |

May be it is not turning faster. Possible bearing of fan is going south? I thought about that but when the fan comes on as the bike is warming up, but before riding, it is turning at the normal speed. It was only after I started riding that I heard in whining with the higher RPM rate. This is the same ultra-high speed that it uses when cooling down a very hot engine after turning off the bike. |

Well it could be you are hearing it run on a higher speed than what you have heard before. Ecm controls the speed as needed,, |

I've notice that the fan comes on during extended warm up periods, but at a much slower speed than while the bike is in motion. Unless there's a noisy bearing going on, I think you're hearing normal behavior. |

With both my factory ECU with the last iteration of programming and with my IDS ECU, the fan runs at "high" when triggered while riding. |

I'm beginning to see what seems like VR fluctuations again. I had hoped that replacing the battery would be all that was needed. But on two occasions since replacing the battery I've seen symptoms of unstable voltage: headlight notably brightens when revving engine facing garage door, and ultra-high speed fan operation (overheating skip-spark fan speed) when it was only 40 degrees outside and engine was cool enough to touch. Ordered the Shindengen fh020aa VR crimp-n-go kit and universal mounting plate this evening. Not gonna waste money on another harley VR. |

I agree with your decision. When my VR went I was blowing headlight bulbs when I got 17 volt surges. At idle it was fine but when riding it failed. No more Harley VR's, good decision. |

Thought about putting a voltmeter in the dash? Easy, fun project. |

Thought about putting a voltmeter in the dash? Easy, fun project. Absolutely. It's on the list, but haven't found a cheap (small) unit that meets my needs yet. adafruit sells one for about 8 bucks that I may play with, but I'll need to make a faceplate and add a fuse and switch to it. Right now my diagnostics involve keeping a digital meter in the top case and occasionally pulling over and checking the voltage while the bike is running. But who wants to pull over and take the seat off when there are twisties to be ridden? |

Should be able to test right out of the on dash cigar lighter charging port. Make a simple wire adapter and tape your meter to the bars. |

"adafruit sells one for about 8 bucks" Sure that's fine and dandy if you're Nelson Rockefeller.... https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9 SIABKS8GE8553&Description=volt%20meter&ignorebbr=1 &cm_re=volt_meter-_-9SIABKS8GE8553-_-Product I bought three of these. I couldn't resist. I'm going to try to encase one in epoxy and stick it on my X1. |

I have one of these on every front master cylinder... https://www.kuryakyn.com/products/872/led-battery- gauge Indispensible, especially with heated grips, heated clothes, GPS, and aux lights. Just do NOT use the power outlet as your tap-source - the ECM will shut it off when voltage drops below a threshold (i.e. when you need the meter the most). Tap into a headlight wire, or a wire for the gauge backlights. Something always on with the key. |

I have on of those kuryakin things on my XB12X. It works great and has lasted me a long time. The only crime it's guilty of is cost. |

If the ECM has shut down your outlets, you are already past the point of the gauge doing anything other than telling you what you should already know. The cutoff voltage is low enough that if your charging system is failing you aren't getting much further. |

I've had one for a long time. The price has obviously risen!! |

I bought one off amazon or eBay for maybe 2 or 3 bucks...its around 1.5 inches wide and .75 inches tall. I placed it behind the clear plastic of the gauge cluster by carefully trimming back the lower unused portion of the backing on the idiot light side of the cluster. It looks factory and i maybe have an hour into it. |

Hey, while we’re on the subject, where’s the best place to tap into switched power to accurately read battery voltage? I have a monitor I’d like to install before the ADK run in May. |

Should be able to test right out of the on dash cigar lighter charging port. Make a simple wire adapter and tape your meter to the bars. Ya. BIG MULTIMETER!!! tape bad... lighter port is less desirable because I've noticed that engine vibration has a negative effect on stuff staying plugged in. They shake loose. Of course the wiring for the plug may do well as a tap point for a supplemental battery voltage gauge. :^) |

I, also, had a Kuryakyn meter many moons ago. I don't recall it being so spendy! Nate- You, sir, win the Cheap A$$ of the year award! Well done, sir! |

I did Fatty’s Meter Mod, and installed the Signal Dynamics voltage indicator LED in the dash, years ago. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/335986.html?1202653245 The Custom Dynamics link doesn’t work, but this one does: http://www.signaldynamics.com/heads-up-voltage-mon itor/ It works great, looks stock, and wasn’t hard to install. It does indicate over voltage, with the blinking green. |

I purchased the multi-mode Signal Dynamics voltage monitor. I went with this unit because I was able to choose that the LED would be dark if voltage is correct. |

Not a fan of idiot lights. If I'm gonna put an indicator on my bike then I want a real voltage readout, not an arbitrary warning light. I did kind of like the bar graph indicator shown by Tootal above. |

I use a Gamma Tronix single LED on Lil Red. I have it set so green is good, red is bad, and yellow means I need to look at what's going on.
It will work on 6v, 12v, and 24v. It has 6 programs loaded into it and has one button. It will also display flashing. Flashing red is over voltage in the program I am using. |

Any photos of where/how you guys mounted the FH020AA on the Uly? The larger universal mounting plate certainly isn't going to fit without a lot of cutting, and it looks like it would expect the VR fins to be mounted diagonally instead of vertically, once cut for the original location. Mark_Weiss posted something in another thread (2016) about using the oil cooler mount, but no photos that I could find. Any PUBLIC references to photos are appreciated. |

Rob, Ratbuell mounted his with the plugs down. I mounted mine with the plugs pointing up. I used the original mounting location by drilling and tapping a couple of holes for 1/4-20. I'll look for the other threads. Dean L. did a nice job of it in the thread linked above. |

This what you're looking for? http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/667134.html Actually, no...but thanks. I bought Jack's universal mounting plate and I don't mind cutting it to fit, but I don't want to drill or tap anything if I can avoid. I don't have a drill press or taps available. |
