All done...FH020AA VR installed, using pigtail from old HD VR. Out there in the breeze I expect it to stay pretty cool, too. Another first was riding my Uly in the snow for a few miles to test everything out.

Do you have a chin rest on the air box so you can watch the gauge? Don’t be so quick to dismiss the LED voltage monitors as idiot lights. An idiot light is the oil pressure light that lets you know that your engine is currently self-destructing. The various LED monitors are smart lights that indicate specific set points that are most important. The big plus is that you don’t have to be looking at them. Amber is a warning, red and blinking green are both real bad, and you can catch this in your peripheral vision. With a gauge, you’re not going to see that damaging spike unless it has an instant response rate and you happen to be looking right at it just then. They’re good for diagnostics, though, if you want to check voltage stability or accessory draw. |

Ok then. When you have that voltage spike that damages stuff, if you are mid twisties at speed, you don't see the gage or idiot light point it out to you, what have you gained by installing them? For that matter, what difference would it make if you were looking right at the gage when it happens. The bike will certainly tell you the same thing gage or not. It will quit running, burn out the headlamps, smell like plastic melting,and or not start again. IMHO it is like monitoring the level of a sinking ship. It is already gone down, the angle of descent is not relevant unless you could back up time and stop the event before it happened. With or without it, AAA for motorcycles is a good idea. It will likely need towed to somewhere. If you listen to ( and or feel) the machine, it will tell you something is wrong, probably still cannot prevent it, but it will tell you. |

The various LED monitors are smart lights that indicate specific set points that are most important. Most important is always subjective. You can have your indicators. I'm old school and my brain gets more information from an analogue gauge. For me it's not usually so much a current snapshot of a value as it is about rate of change in that value. That's one reason I hate modern digital speed displays. My brain is often more interested in how fast that needle is sweeping, than where it is when I glance at it. Disagree...a voltage indicator while riding would have taken a lot of the guess work out of my failing VR, specifically when the fan started spinning at near light-speed, and I wouldn't have then had to wade through the anecdotal advice of other well meaning, but not always correct respondents. and again, IMHO, AAA is really never a good idea. Too many exclusions of what they will do/cover, and they were recently busted for helping to put local towing services out of business here in PA, by financing cut-rate California firms to move into the area and then contracting exclusively with them. Too much sleeze for me. |

When my VR started to fault I would have needed to be looking at a gauge to note that something was amiss. With the signal dynamics smart LED I was able to catch periodic flashes of red/green in my peripheral vision. This allowed me to decrease RPM well before any damage occurred. Checking with a gauge showed the VR as healthy because it took about 45 minutes before regulation started to break down. |

When the Uly started blowing bulbs at what seemed random times I installed an LED and analog gage. When the lights would go supernova I would check the gages. Voltage spikes over 17 volts and holding sealed the deal. I bought an FH020AA. Installed it and never looked back. I like knowing voltage before I start the bike, after I start the bike, a mile down the road, when pulling up to the pump, etc. If a ship is sinking, it's nice to have an indication that you need to beach it if possible. |
