This will be a little long and I apologize. I just reset the TPS on my '06 Uly. When I started it she kept stalling, due to a too low idle. I re-started it about 5-6 times before it settled into a very low idle. I shut it off and loosened the throttle cable so I could adjust it up a little. The bike does not have the idle adjuster behind the air scoop - must have been modified. I turned on the key and hit the starter button and nothing. Not a click even. The gauges did their usual full sweep, and the what I assume is the fuel pump did it's thing. Tried several times and nothing but silence from the starter. So I checked the start 15amp fuse and it looked good, but I replaced it anyway. No luck. Next I tested the start relay as per the shop manual. It tested bad. Though I had it. I pulled the AUX relay and put it in the START relay's spot. Still nothing. I could use some ideas guys!! Thanks |

Battery - either voltage or connections. |

I have the battery on a charger just in case, and the connections look good and I loosened and re-tightened then just in case. |

I put on some external toothed washers in between the cables and battery recently. No clickee, no startee. Removed the washers and put them under the bolt heads and it started right up. Check the fuses to see if they're tight in the connections. If they're wobbly that can cause lots of problems, too. |

Test the second relay too. |

Does the little wire on the starter show voltage when you press the yellow button? |

The battery is good, lights strong, horn strong, reads 12v. Loosened and retightened battery anyway. I can hardly get to the starter, but when trying to expose the rubber cable cover (at the starter) I accidentally hit ground and got a big spark. Seems hot to me. I'm wondering if the ignition switch may be malfunctioning... |

Also, I put in a new starter relay and no joy there either. Shouldn't the headlight dim, or go off, when I press the stater button? |

The light should go off. I would take a look inside of the starter switch and see if that's full of mung. |

The headlight should go off unless somebody has wired "both lights on" when in high beam mode. Some switched the wires at the connection at the headlight which sends power from the Euro parking light to the low beam which puts it on a different fuse and the power to that fuse does not go off during the starter activation. |

Shoggin- "Does the little wire on the starter show voltage when you press the yellow button?" The LITTLE wire. The big one you touched and sparked goes straight to the battery. The LITTLE single wire activates the starter. It is the other end of the starter relay wire and the answer will tell you if its a wiring issue or a bad starter. |

And do what Steveford said. It's easy to follow those wires to under the fly screen to check for voltage into the yellow button and out from the yellow button when it's pressed without even taking the switch apart. |

OK I'll check that today. I really suspect the starter button, because the lights do not go off when depressed, and I'm sure it used to. I'll let you know, and thanks so much for the help |

OK! Took the handlebar switch apart, got continuity to the start button, hit the button and it started! I'll spray electric cleaner on it and reassemble and let you know. Fingers crossed and many thanks! |

Good deal. If you can get at the contact for the button stick some dielectric grease in there. If not, a good shot of WD40 can't hurt. |

Thanks again everybody! It's back together and working fine. I did put dielectric grease in so should be fine from here on. Honestly I don't know what I'd do without you guys and this fantastic forum!! If any of you are ever in Tennessee look me up, you're welcome to stay here. The roads are twisty and hilly. Huntsville, is that all a person can do is spray electric cleaner. Or are there exposed contacts that can actually be cleaned? I think I am in the same boat. And before I tear into a starter replacement, I am going to check that switch. As it may have been getting finicky prior to stopping alltogether just as your did. Is it still the norm to short the negative on the battery to a head bolt to test for bad ground otherwise? Thanks guys! |

Just so you know , if it reoccurrs, there were some 06 bikes that suffered key switch failures. It was rare, but I do recall reading about it. So if it does it again flick the key around a bit. |
