The stock cases are the Hepco & Becker Journey cases. It seems like my latches don't open all the way. It is really hard to open the luggage, especially with a key in the hole. I have to put my hand around the sides of the latch and pull it up/away from the bag. I saw a video of how they are supposed to work, and mine do not unlatch all the way. I took the latch off to look inside it and the only thing I can see is maybe the spring pushing it open isn't strong enough? I was hoping somebody had some experience with this. | ||

Mine never did that. Perhaps just blindly blast it with WD40 and give it exercise? Make sure your crappy plastic pivot isn't popped in some weird way too. | ||

I pull my key out after unlocking them, then I have to pull out, then in and then out again and they open fine. For some reason they don't just pop up like they should. | ||

With the key inserted one way, the latch hits as it opens. With the key reversed, the latch clears. Check the underside of the latch faces, where the pins go through the latch ribs. Look for cracks or out-of-round holes. | ||

I had a set of latches that behaved as Kingcobra501's. I swapped in a new set and they worked great: unlock the box, push the lid toward the bike which releases the latch, lower the lid. Each was back to its bad behavior within a year's time. I will try lubing as suggested by Natexlh1000. | ||

WD catches and holds dirt and grit. Use the same dry lube you use on your clutch cable. | ||

My latches have been kind of finicky. Usually takes a little jiggling. I agree with Ratbuell, that WD40, or any oily lube, will attract dirt and grime. I just now tried a little silicone spray on one of the latches, and it seems to work better, but the bags aren't on the Uly now, so I'll mess with them more when they are mounted. The latches have two hinge points, each has a steel hinge pin. that is where I sprayed the silicone. | ||

Yes WD-40 traps grit. It's an intermediate step. Think of it as mostly a solvent. Blast a thing with WD-40, clean it off, then lube it up properly. | ||

I prefer graphite spray...usually sold as lock lube. The graphite is suspended in alcohol which quickly evaporates... | ||

Thank you so much for the advice, everybody. My latches are performing better now that I've lubricated the joints. I'm still turned off from buying a similar latch function in the future but this is working for now. | ||

I broke 2 latches, early on, when my 06 was new. Luckily, they both were replaced under warranty. Once I learned to never have pressure on the latch by closing the bag fully before latching, they have been fine. I can’t recall ever lubing them either. I will start now after reading this, being a preventative maintenance believer. I always carry 2 short bungee cords, just in case I do happen to break one. Someone here did a successful repair on a broken latch, but it looked like a pain, from what I remember. |
