Ourdee, yes. I've liked it. Changed the ECM with it. Side note: On XP's the stock ECM had a speed limiter. With the new ECM from Tim, the speed limiter is gone. Not that I ever go that fast. : )

Should be limited to 139 now. That is red line in fifth gear with stock red line and gearing. You will have to take the luggage off to hit it. First time you hit it you may think you broke something.

What was the limiter set at on the stock XPs.

Ourdee, I do not know the exact speed limit and I can ask some fellows that will know. I believe it was just short of 120. What they did say was due to tires--I think it was Dunlops--there was a handling issue. What was interesting, though, my bike was not delivered with Dunlop's, but rather Pirelli's. Maybe someone in the know can add some color here.

Buell switched from Dunflops to Pirelli's across the board starting with 2007. Only the 06 Uly came with the D616, everything newer was either the Pirelli Scorpion Sync or Angel ST.

Frank, Do you know of any speed limiter that was in the XP's programming from the factory besides the red line limit?

Ourdee, I may have first learned it from Froggy. : )
Or I did sit next to Froggy a time or two at Homecoming and we may have chatted about it there.
Anyway, see last post on the link below.

Froggy mentioned: "Also another feature of the XP is an artificial speed limiter, I think its set to 120mph or something.

(Don't ask me why, I didn't design it! : ))"

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/593137.html?1284208376

But I did ask a Buell engineer about why later, and that is where I heard about the tire issue. It has been a while so I would have to get the specifics. It was just a small part of a much bigger conversation. I do not think I would have known to ask about it had I not read it before, and it could very well have been Froggy's post.

I mentioned the particularity about Dunlop tires because as Froggy mentioned they switched from Dunlop to Pirelli's for 2007 models and the XP didn't come out till 2009. At the time I didn't know these details and so was not sharp enough to further question this. In the end, if my memory is failing me, I may be wrong about the brand of tire though that they were having the problem with.

This was the first I had heard of it. May be a tire loading issue. A police duty bike should be carrying extra gear for a duty load out.

Very likely it was some sort of LEO bid process / contracting specification, in the name of "public safety". Patrol cars/SUVs have calibrated/certified speedometers and it wouldn't surprise me if they also had a 120mph cap.

I used to own an FLHP as a daily rider, and it used a different rear tire (Dunlop, like all HD OEMs) than the civilian bikes because the police editions shipped with a solo seat, so they used a different (cheaper) tire because the typical weight load on a cop bike would be less. As a matter of practice, if we ever resold a retired police service bike the first thing we did was install a civilian rear tire - no other changes, other than installing/wiring white passing lamp bulbs instead of the red/blue.

I don't think the HDs needed a 120mph limiter...

Ratbuell, what you say makes sense. That pulls it together for me.

How true! Even my higher compression, 95" engine, torque cammed and ported heads FLTR will only hit 120, and it does it pretty quickly considering but at 120 it hits a wall. I told my race engine building buddy and he laughed and said,"yep, you ran out of cam!"
