Late last summer and into early this year the Uly was stumbling and cutting out after extended highway speed runs. I travel about an hour each way for work so it became a daily occurrence. When the beast finally cutout out for about 5 seconds while I was between a couple of big trucks I decided it was time to figure out what was wrong. Armed with information from Teeps I cracked open the ECM to discover that 6 of the terminal posts had fully cracked solder joints and another 3 had partially cracked. A little patience and work with a solder iron had the joints back in order. Buttoned up the ECM and have about 150 trouble free miles on it. It runs better now than it has in for a while. The point of this is to say thanks to everyone on here who has done the leg work and posted the pictures along with detailed howto's so the rest of us are able to keeps these jems running properly. It's nice having the beast back on the road again.

Generally these things are easy to fix when diagnosed properly. The hard part of diagnosis is that so often the bikes will have a main complaint problem, a separate hidden problem, and six or more symptoms that overlap other potential problems. Therefor look for and fix the simple easy stuff first, then get into the things that have expense attached. Good on ya for finding and fixing what can be a perplexing cause of so many problems. |

Thanks for the props. However, I was just a conduit. Sorry to say the best photos in that thread are no longer there. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/726411.html?1334338510 |

I take advantage of this topic and want to ask: is there anyone here that successfully repaired the ECM (in the same manner as described here) from +2008 Uly? |

The repair procedure in the link I posted (above) should work regardless of the year or model of the ECM. The only way to know for sure is to open your bike's ECM and confirm the solder joints are cracked. |

I think this will be a good project for the winter, because now if i will try to open the ECM from my bike and i screw things up, i have to wait too much for a new one. I was asking because the ECM from my bike has a lot more terminal pins at each connector, compared with the ECM from a 2006 Uly. |

Hey guys, here's some of the pictures from my original post about this problem. The server that I used to use is no longer in service which is why the old pictures are gone. So instead I'm going to attach them here so that badweather will have a record of them. Hopefully they will live on for as long as badweather sticks around. Here's a picture showing the solder joints that were repaired.
And here are some pictures of what the cracked solder joints look like under a microscope. As you can see there were multiple pins that were bad.

Circuit boards don't like vibration? Maybe that's why I had to do the same thing on my Peavey amp that is driving my Subwoofers! |
