My 06 has 27k on it and the right fork seal is leaking for the first time. Remembering in the past some people also did the bushings, at 27K is this really necessary at this mileage ? Or is it just a matter of while you are in there. | ||

I recommend you buy the bushings and have them on hand just in case. They're relatively cheap. When you disassemble the forks, check the condition of the old bushings. If they're OK, leave them in. If they're worn, replace. Mine were still fine at 40,000 miles when I last checked them. | ||

^ Or you can buy the made for the purpose tool called a "Sealmate". http://www.sealmate.net As long as the leak just started and you haven't obviously leaked a huge amount of oil, I wouldn't be worried about it. | ||

You need to remove the dust cover to get to the seal. I used the film method but wasn't doing any good, I was just cleaning the dust cover!  | ||

I ordered the All Balls seals and also the Seal Mate give that a try. For 8 bucks it's worth a shot | ||

Came here to discuss the subject at hand 2006 Uly Replaced the seals at ~ 19K miles, put in 2010 springs while we were at it. Now at ~29K miles and the right front tube seems to be leaking. * 10K miles seems a pretty short half life. When we get in there are there any particular problems we should be looking for? * Can anybody provide a good, mail-order source for seals & bushings? * While we are at it we might as well replace the front brake pads. Any suggestions on front brake pads and sources for them? | ||

You might have a little burr in your fork slider that is making a slight tear in the seal. Was the same fork leaking when you first replaced the seals? Bug carapaces are very hard and can also cause tears in seals. Slider gaitors or the like can help with this once the seals are replaced. To check for a burr, raise the bike up to get as much of the fork exposed as possible. Run a shear cloth, nylon, woman's knee highs or the like and the burr will snag the material. A burr that you can't feel by your bare hand but that the material identifies will cause a leak. You can remove the burr by carefully sanding with very fine wet and dry sandpaper. Had this experience on my old Beemer. | ||

You can also find problem spots by using the edge of your fingernail. I had a couple of TINY rust pits in my Uly fork that caused this issue. The pit wasn't the problem but there was a slight raised edge that cut the seal. It was just enough to catch on your fingernail. I gently went over it with a flat file. The file didn't do anything to the chromed surface of the tube but it took off the bur around the pit quickly. Then I treated the pit with rust converter and put a drop of paint in it. After I dried, I sanded that with very fine (~1000 grit) sandpaper. No more issues. | ||

Just to put my 2 cents in. I have had good luck with the all balls seals on my uly. I think I have 15k miles with no leaks. I also suggest getting some shock dust covers, moose racing makes a set for cheap. brake pads, I, along with most people, suggest ebc HH sintered pads. | ||

I'm running ceramic pads. Nothing special. Dirt from the pads can cause seal leaks on the right fork tube. | ||

Moose Racing shock socks and EBC HH pads here. No issues with either. |
