Bill (Reepicheep) flew into Houston this morning and bought my beautiful Uly. He is now headed back to southwest Ohio on 'his' beautiful Uly! Bill is a great guy and my wife and I really enjoyed the visit. I couldn't be happier knowing Bill will enjoy and appreciate the Uly as I did. Selling it was a tough decision but it couldn't have worked out better. Here are some pics of his departure:

That is too cool, Slawman! . It was a great bike for me and taking care of it was a joy. We had a close partnership. |

I did need that. Mike will miss the Uly, but there is a GORGEOUS Indian in the garage that will take the edge off after about 5 minutes of riding. Beautiful bike, and well suited to the places he lives and rides. And he is welcome to ride up here to Ohio, and take his old Uly for a week any time he wants. Mike and his wife were beyond generous and thoughtful, and the deal was more like an adoption then a sale. The deal itself was the normal "crazy low" price that Uly's are running, but the condition of this thing and all the accessories Mike kept throwing at me were ridiculously generous. All the way down to a throttle lock. All my motorcycling friends, next time you see me, I want you to IMMEDIATELY give me a dope slap and demand to know why I didn't buy a throttle lock 10 years ago. Anyway, the ride back was both wet and dry, and just beautiful. The rain was a mild annoyance at times, but made the views in between staggeringly beautiful. Rainbows over Arkansas, misty hills in Tennessee, beautiful sunsets in Kentucky. The only person who really suffered was the poor people at the Arkansas Hardees north of Little Rock that had to mop up a large pool of water from where I sat draining eating my breakfast biscuit. I apologized in advance when I was ordering, and warned the cashier I would leave a pool, and she just laughed and said no problem. Slawman! I was wondering who that was! I'm bored out of my mind and overheating (me, not bike) stuck in traffic in Nashville. I see a work truck with a KTM sticker on one window, and a Buell sticker in the other, and think "that's my people" and honk and wave as my lane crawls forward. A minute later, his lane crawls back forward, he shows me a picture of me, and says "you just bought that bike!" Small world, great community. I didn't get many pictures on the way back, I had a lot of miles to cover, and was nearly always wet, and trying not to drown an IPhone. More to come, but I *really* have to catch up on work. You won't believe how well Mike maintained this bike. It has 33k (well, now 34k ) miles on it, and it is no joke to say it was in better shape then ones I saw sitting in the showroom in 2008. And the whole "X vs XT" needs a thread of it's own (which I will make). I was shopping for "either" and didn't expect much difference. I have an X now. They feel like totally different bikes, I couldn't believe how much different it feels. And I can't believe how well this XT handles. It's surreal. Thanks again Mike! Once a Bueller always a Bueller. |

(And credit for Mike for not running me down and taking the bike back when I pulled out the driveway... Leaving was the first time I rode it, and the clutch engagement point was way different then my Uly XT (his was much more right) and the steering geometry was WAY different for reasons I still don't understand, so the right turn out of the driveway was much less smooth then an experienced rider should have made. I promise I don't wobble and foot dab around every corner. I'm still getting used to the geometry and clutch engagement point, this is the first Buell I have ridden that holds a line through a corner, I'm used to having to keep pressure on the bars to hold the line. Neutrally holding a line is arguably better, but I'll have to get used to it.) |

I'm almost finished converting my X to an XT- I have had the rear shock and kickstand on for a few months. I had installed bar risers and raised the forks ~1" in the triple clamps on the front to compensate. A couple of weeks ago, a Badwebber posted on FB that he was looking to swap his XT forks for X forks so I jumped on that. Hopefully I'll finish up the swap tonight. I'm very interested to see how much difference the "correct" shorter forks make. Bill- on the clutch engagement- you can radically alter the engagement point by adjusting the screw under the clutch cover ("major adjustment" in the shop manual). It's a pretty easy adjustment if you want to change it. |

Congrats on your new ride. Gotta say though, you look too big for that bike in the last photo. Possibly you didn't set up the suspension for your weight before you left. The rear shock preload looks way soft in that last photo. (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on July 15, 2016) |

I haven't adjusted the preload yet. I look huge on any bike. I can't do anything about the height, but I lost 5 pounds on that ride home. (Literally, I had just started the diet the week before the trip). I'm sure I'm at least 50 pounds heavier than Mike, and there was at least 45 pounds of tools and gear hidden away in all that luggage, so I'm sure it needed more than it had. I had 1100 miles to cover in 1.5 days, so I didn't fuss with much, and everything I did was going to be redone anyway. I adjusted the bar position and headlight aim outside a hotel in Little Rock, and ditched the laminar lip sometime near Nashville. I haven't even started with the suspension yet, I need some milk crate time with the bike and the manual to dial in the suspension. I thought the same thing when I saw that picture. The Uly is a BIG bike, and I still look like a monkey on a football when I ride it. I can loose the weight, but the height isn't going away, and with protective gear over my protective gear, I'm always going to look a little silly on any motorcycle I would want to own. I've come to terms with that. You should have seem me riding the 9sx, it was comical (though that bike really fit well, though it becomes a bit of a but burner after about 300 miles). |

Also, this is an XT, not an X. So it looks a lot lower even before my fat &$$ hops on it. I'll have to go out to the garage and see if it is actually any lower or not (exhaust to ground clearance). It might just be "fender effects" playing games with the eyes. I definitely like the XT better than the X in terms of how the bike rides. It handles like my 9sx but has most of the comfort of my Uly X (though the firmer suspension is a little less comfy, but I'll take that in a hearbeat for the spectacular stability and handling on the XT. I can't believe how the thing is on rails through a corner.) |

Bill, thank you for the very nice comments about Lia and me. You are a great guy and we both thoroughly enjoyed meeting you. For any of you Buellers out there who have not met Bill, (Reepicheep), let me assure you that he is a great, very pleasant and enjoyable guy with a great attitude and a head FULL of knowledge on a lot of things. We like your comment on 'adoption' vs. sale, Bill. We could not feel better about where our/your Uly is. I'm glad to hear you like the throttle lock too! You put a lot of miles on in a short period and they are nice to have. Nothing but great feelings about this which seems strange because I liked the bike so much. I'll be in touch. |

They are great bikes, Ourdee, I agree. I remember you wrote that if I sold it I'd miss it and only time will tell, of course, but having sold it to Bill I don't think so. A great guy who loves it and that is so cool. As Bill said, this feels more like an adoption than a sale and we really like the adopting parent. I had nearly 7 great years with it, have two very nice bikes in the stable, and am happy for Bill. Hard to beat that. |

I'm curious now.....what tires does this XT have vs the X?? And what air pressures? |

From what you can see in the pics those sure look like Angels. That's what I run on my XT, nice tire although some people prefer the PR3's (or is it 4's now). I sort of go by price point since I usually need tires when I can least afford them and the Pirelli's are always less expensive. I don't think there's any difference in spec for air pressure though. |

Yup. Mike put new Angels on it not long before I got it. I've been running Pilot Roads on my previous Uly, and Scorpion Syncs before that on the Uly and the XB9SX. I am assuming the tires are a significant factor as well. I know the differnce between a D205 and an MEZ6 were pretty significant. I adjusted the suspension yesterday. That may change a lot also. I haven't ridden it again yet. I don't know the pressure, I haven't checked it (yeah, shame on me) but they aren't obviously low. I like the Angels so far. Stick well wet or dry, seem to be wearing pretty well. |

I installed a set of Angels and completed an XT conversion on mine last week. I've been riding twisties in the NC mountains most of the day and I am SO glad I switched from Pilot Roads back to Pirellis after several years of running PR's. The steering just seems effortless now. The PR's seemed to require deliberate input going through the turns. |

I felt the Pirelli Angels were good tires, wet or dry. I ran 40psi in them, Bill. That's what they had in them when you pulled out. Your Uly sure looked clean, Ulyful. Good man. |

Thanks for the datapoint Hugh! So the tires are a non trivial factor. |

I have run my original factory Dunlaps, and Perilli Scorpion Syncs, and Michelin Pilot Road I and II, and now a Continental on the rear of my Uly. The best handling longest lasting by far, of those tires for me, were the Pilot Road II. I am happy with the Continental thus far, but I am not riding up on the bars the way I did a few years back, and I only have about 800 miles on it so far. There are a very noticeable differences between those different brands. I have read where the Angels are quite good. But, as you might recall, the Buell riding World crashed about the time they came out. |

Hugh, sounds like you did a XT conversion and a switch of tires (concurrently?). Which change (or both) accounts for the improved steering? |

Rode this morning with the new dialed in suspension. Still wonderful handling, still holds a line, and is a a lot more intuitive for me now on which line it will take (which is also no doubt me getting used to the bike). It really handles nice. I like the angels. |
