Has anyone ridden one or bought one? This is the only new bike that I have a real interest in. Spec wise it is fairly close to our Uly's ,of course you have to adjust the valves and deal with a chain but I could deal with that. I check out a sold one at the local Honda dealer, looks lot bigger in person, very tall, I couldn't sit on it since it was sold. | ||

Really interested in one myself. 6 weeks ago checked in at local Honda dealer. He had none at that time. Two coming in and allready sold. Made of unobtanium probably. 690 ktm, 701 husky, probably several others in same boat. After 5 years or so, I saw my first and only 690 ktm in lamarque dealership. How it wasn't sold yet , I'll never know. Hard to want and never be able to see one for real. Bought a road king in 96 new sight unseen, waited 8 months for that bike . Said I'll never do that again. I'm really interested in real life opinions on big Honda as well. | ||

Sat on one yesterday at the Honda dealer in Elizabeth City, NC. Beautiful bike. I'm 5 11. AT is too tall in my opinion. Looking at doing the CB500X with a Rally Raid kit. Want a nimble, reliable and mostly capable off road bike. And that can do road miles. BUT, not gonna give up the Uly. I sat on the Africa also, very nice bike. I also got to see the new-to-USA Honda VFR1200X V4 twin (also an adventure bike). A little more money, but I like that one a lot. They both sit pretty tall, which I happen to like. (Message edited by djohnk on June 05, 2016) | ||

If you are seriously considering the Africa Twin, you need to understand that the bike weighs the same as an 1100 Shadow. It has enough electronic crap on it to make it nearly impossible to repair at home and definitely not repairable in the field. It is NOT an off road machine, contrary to the marketing hype. You wouldn't take a Shadow off road now would you? It was designed to appeal to folks who don't know any better for the purpose of riding to and from Starbucks. I'm sure it will fulfill that role just fine. In fact, I have never had a bad Honda. My CL 360 was not good off road either and weighed half as much. Great little street bike though. | ||

I was excited for the ATwin, but it faded. It's a big heavy bike- and not cheap. 21" front means you give up a lot on tarmac, and it's heavy for the dirt. The pros can make it look good off road, but they aren't paying or walking when it goes down. Picked up a CB500x and waiting on the Rally Raid stage 3 kit. Had hoped to take the little Honda to Alaska next month, but parts delays mean the Uly will probably be making that trip. | ||

I'm perpetually searching for my Uly replacement too- it'll be a few years out, but it's always fun to look at motorcycles! I've ridden GSAs, F800GS, Tenere, none of the new Hondas or Triumphs. I keep coming back to the Tiger 800 roadie, close specs to the Uly, price of entry isn't bad and a 19/17 wheel combo gives some latitude for dirt oriented tires as well as decent street offerings. I need to go ride one, but my wife may kill me. I'm 2-3 years out from a new bike (and there will be a lot offered in that time span), but looking for something that's a true swiss army knife like the Uly, can take the kiddo camping when he's old enough, play in the gravel and hopefully make a trip to Alaska in 2020 or 2021. | ||

I wouldn't say I 'replaced' my 08 Uly with a '14 Triumph Tiger Explorer, since I still have the Uly, but almost all my riding has been on the TEX since I bought it. Observations after a year and 10K miles: The Uly does feel more flickable. It's certainly more of a sport bike. The TEX has way more power. It handles very well and carries its weight nicely. There are some nice features on the TEX including a sixth gear, better instrumentation, etc. I also like having confidence that I won't break a belt, have my ECM fail, have my bearings fall out, etc. on the TEX. I'm very happy with it. I'm glad I kept the Uly because it's fun to take out once in awhile but if I were going more than 50 miles from the house, I'd take the TEX every time. I also tried the Aprillia Caponord, (do you really want an Italian bike with electronic suspension?) the Super Tenere (I just hated the look of the thing), the Tiger 800 (underwhelming). Triumph offers pretty good deals on older models, I got mine for $5 over invoice, no shipping, no prep, and they threw in $500 of accessories, which covered the engine protection bars, the hand guards, and a hat, with three bucks to spare after shipping. | ||

Skifast, The TEX has been on my radar since it was launched. I should have listed that one too. Also haven't ridden one, there are deals to be had on the the 15s now and the new ones are quickly approaching BMWs with all of the added electronics and rider aids. That'll be another one to check out since it's a bit unique. The new ones even have sport bike tire sizes! The VFR1200X looks like a nice sport tourer, I've ridden a few Honda V4s and they're a sweet engine. The one thing that seems to turn me off from the UJM bikes are the dealerships we have around here... Craaaaazzzyyyyy Kevin Powell Motorsports, where every entry level rider needs a Busa or something that'll do 100 in first gear. I don't even walk into the places anymore. I do stop at the BMW shop and Triumph shop from time to time and enjoy those relationships. Prior |
