Very strange ... It's happened 3x since I've owned the bike (2weeks) . With the key off, I've turned the wheel and both gauges do their sweep as if I turned the key on. The PO stated the clock resets at random and he said there was some talk about a loose ground within the gauge pod but a ground wouldn't make the gauges sweep.... Would it??? | ||

What year is your bike? 3 times in 2 weeks; it's going to be difficult to run this down. But, I would start by removing the windscreen and just looking around in there for chaffed wires. | ||

It's probably in the wiring next to the goose neck. You will have to unwrap it and see if two wires have worn the insulation off and are either grounding out or sending juice to the gauges. Look in the book and find out what color wire provides power to the gauges and check it first. While you're there check the ground on the front of the goose neck. Sometimes they will look good but break under the insulation. | ||

It's gonna be in the wiring somewhere at the steering head. My 06 did the exact same thing, I had a broken battery-hot wire that went to the cluster. Turn the bars the wrong way, it opened that circuit like the battery had been disconnected. Reconnection caused the needle sweep. There's a thread on it here somewhere from when I made my repair. It was less than fun to troubleshoot - if you can find the thread maybe you can shortcut your way to the problem. | ||

Thanks guys for your input. It's a 2009 Ulysses (X) with 11,000 miles. It only happens when the key is off and when I turn the wheel. I hate electrical gremlins but I guess I'm gonna be splitting the wiring harness on the neck. Ratbuell, do you remember the title of your thread? | ||

I got the same issue with my 07 right now. Spent a little time to find the issue but no luck so far. Remove the connector to the cluster. There is a solid red and a solid black wire which provide the power. I read something about a splice of the red wire somewhere in the goose neck area, but didn't get down that far yet. I had a similar issue. I have an electrical engineering background, but I solved it with a mechanical inspection of the wires easier than I solved it with a study of the schematic (I did both). Pull apart the wiring bundle, and pull each individual wire through your fingers with a slight bend. You will feel any internally broken conductors really easily, like feeling for a broken bone under intact skin. | ||

I don't have a schematic for an '09, but thought Buell fixed the harness problem in the neck area by 2009. But, from your description. The gauge assy. wire that is hot with the key in the run position, is shorting to battery power. It would not hurt to check the ground wires (2) on the steering head. It does have a simple switch with a hot lead off the battery for a set of off-road lights. I haven't pulled it apart yet but I know the off-road light wires are far away from the harness. This sounds like a weekend project for me. So far it's affecting my riding except for my clock being reset at random. I'll check "gauge sweep" posts. | ||
