Howdy folks, bout to take a look at this 06 XB12X tomorrow and am wondering exactly what I should be asking of the owner. I am not completely new to the motorcycle arena, but am to Buell. I'm trying to go cross country by the end of the month and need something with the reliability and finesse to do it cheaply |

Service records, recalls, how was the bike ridden. Lots of 2 up seems to stress the wheel bearings, that stupid throttle body butterfly shaft should probably be replaced before you go across country just to be on the safe side. |

Looks nice, clean, my first question would be about service records, then all the general how was it ridden etc. Next, "would you take $4000 for it? |

Looks like a nice bike. Interesting windscreen setup. I normally don't like the tall ones, but that has enough adjustments it might actually be useful. There is a short list of simple stuff you can check if you want to stack the deck in your favor for a cross country ride, but none that would change the buy decision. The only thing that would stop me from buying that bike would be if it had crank noises. Buells make a lot of alarming noises at idle though, it can be pretty hard to distinguish between "normal scary" and "bad scary". If it sounds like a hammer on an anvil, that's bad. Lots of noise from the pushrod valvetrain is normal though, as is a distinct pop from each cylinder fire (no water jacket to hide the noise of the machine). |

The crank issues were a limited run of 07s. He's looking at an 06. |

Looks nice. And it's got the extra air scoop too. I have a 06 and I have a lot of valve train noise. I switched from Syn3 to Royal purple and still have noise. I have been told if I go to the regular Harley 20/50 most noise will be quieter. $4000 is a good price. |

The crank issues were for sure worse in 07, but I think they upgraded the crank and oiling system in 08 for more reasons than just the 07's. There is a spike of 07 crank issues, but XB12's before 07 sometimes died of crank failure also. So I wouldn't loose sleep over it, particularly with a pre 07 model. But it would be on the list of things to vet buying any XB12 based bike. I think the XB9 stroke is the magic happy place for the evolution motor. And the XB9 normal should have been the XB9, and the XB9 Turbo should have been the XB12. I think it would have resulted in a faster and more reliable motor than the 12. But it wasn't, because HD is staffed by too many empowered cowards. |

Ask how long rear tires last. That will give you a pretty good idea of how hard the bike was ridden. Some report difficulty getting 3k miles from a rear tire. Others report 7k, easy. |

If the bike makes more noise than you like you'll need to insert better ear plugs. |
