Bingo . . . you nailed it. I think racing is less traumatic to machinery than non-use. The current battery likely has less than 100 miles on it but I've been less than diligent, as the Uly sat buried away in the back of the garage, about keeping it on the battery tender.

Lance will have a new HD battery on the way today . . . . we'll pop it in . . . heat cycle a couple times . . do some fresh fluids and go.

One thing about the venerable American twins is they are about impossible to kill.

I had a Harley battery leave me stranded once, but still would buy another (actually just did).

I went to the local Honda dealer and got a new battery last year. Ended up causing me a lot of headache as when I got the bike out this spring it clicked when I tried to start it.

Even though it was on a tender I figured low battery, no problem, bump start and ride it home (2 hours from my dads). Still clicked after it got home, clicked on the charger.

Clicked anytime I hit the damn start button. Tried to charge the battery and my charger said full, took it to the honda dealer and they tested it at full capacity.

Tore the bike apart thinking I had a solenoid issue, grounding issue, corrosion issue, starter motor issue. Finally took it to a garage mechanic who put it on a battery tester where it tested fine. Then he put a load to the battery and tested and it tested dead. Some weird thing happened with the battery.

He threw a new HD one he had on a shelf in and sure enough it worked great and I didn't have to bend the power connector because it fit as designed.

Since battery threads seem to be like oil threads I'll add my 2 cents. the original harley battery was the best I had in the bike (08 date). It still holds a charge but the terminal stripped out (operator error). I bought a big crank and it lasted exactly 2 years. Left me stranded and the only replacement was another Dekka (big crank with a different label)My bike lives on a maintainer unless I'm on a trip with it. I'm also in Florida and I think the heat kills em.

No complaints with the Harley item from me.
My S2 battery lasted fourteen years and it's replacement is going strong after 6 years. My '09 Uly is fine on its original battery too.
I do use an optimate though whenever they are not ridden for any length of time.

......I shouldn't really boast abut this - last time I posted about the long life of the S2 battery on UKBeg it failed a couple of weeks later.

That heat thing middle of summer is real. Ive been known as that guy at gas stop to gas up, find shade, and pull seat off while taking a break. I get some strange looks at times. With in fared thermometer I've had temps at 150f on ecm and battery.
