Seriously, ABS could be a life saver in a panic stop. I have never had ABS on a bike.

Statistically all non ABS riders die. It's a fact. Also, most heart attacks happen at home or at work. Thinking of quitting my job and going for a looooong ride. You can't be too careful about these things!

ULYs are great bikes(and please, do go ride one!), I have owned two. My 09 currently has 64k miles on it, and I continue to love the crap out of it. It has been replaced as my everyday bike by another machine, a 2016 Tiger 800xc(fantastic ride). I did cross shop the new Vstrom 1000 and REALLY liked it, for many of the same reasons I love the Buell; fantastic suspension, real world power delivery, and big comfort. It was almost TOO similar to the Buell, hence the Triumph I now own. They are slow sellers, so good deals can be found on leftover models. Go ride one of those, too.

If you DO decide on a Uly, be prepared to do a few things immediately and from time to time to keep things right. The ECM location and rear wheel bearings deserve a long look, and the muffler WILL rust and need periodic attention, especially as you live in a rainy climate. The wiring loom, up by the headstock is prone to flexing and wires breaking, leading to intermittent headlights, signals, etc.

Hard not to love Japanese reliability, but hard not to FALL in love with a Buell. Good luck in your decision.

Thanks for the offer, Ontheroad68! I think I've secured a ride on one next week, but if it falls through, I'll happily make a trip out to Seattle

I've found a Blue 2009 Uly I'm trying to buy but there are some paperwork issues. If the deal goes through I can give you a good price on my Black 2008 Uly. I'll keep you posted.

The Blue 2009 is in Victoia, Canada. 1 owner bike with Drummer pipe and ECM. As long as Harley Davidson can provide us with a letter stating this bike meets US DOT and EPA specs I'll pick it up on the 30th.

Yep, XT. Were you looking for an X? How long has this Blue 2009 been for sale? The current ad is 9 days old, but maybe you've seen for a while?

You know, I was originally looking for an X but, since starting my search, I've done a ton of looking into the differences between the X and the XT and have come to the conclusion that each has their own advantages and I could happily go for whichever one presented itself as the right deal.

I'm pretty sure this is the first time the Blue 2009 has been listed. I've been watching Craigslist pretty closely for about 6 months now and I don't recall seeing this one until very recently.

I've put quite a few miles on both the S3 and the Ulysses. I had thought my S3 was the best all around bike, but I now believe the Uly can do everything better (but still not as good looking as the S3).
I've put the XT suspension on mine and added a few CF pieces and STT parts - changed the wheel color and added pinstripes. After 6 years -finally getting used to the looks.

I have owned my 1996 S2T since 1999 and loved the way it cornered, braked, accelerated and looked. Bought my 2006 Uly a month ago and it has the same caracteristics plus it can travel on gravel. Sure it has issues but this forum is a wealth of info and most of the members here will share their knowledge with you if you ask. If you have the money, buy the best xb12x you can. If you are on a budget, get an early one cheap and wrench it into submission like I am.

Here's another question, guys: How does the Uly behave in cold/rainy weather? I ask because my Superhawk is a whiny b*#ch in the rain/cold. It never warms up, it runs like crap it coughs and sputters if it gets too wet and is, in general, a pain to live with. I'd really like to avoid having another bike that throws a fit every time it rains.

No problems at all. Runs great. An air cooled motor actually does better in temperature extremes than water cooled. Warms up faster, and can handle higher temperatures. Water cooling lets you build to tighter tolerances and make better power as a result, but if you can live with 100hp motorcycle (can't believe I type that as a serious question), I'd bet an air cooled can ultimately handle both colder and hotter temps than water cooled.

I can tell when it is cold out with my Uly because it wants to wheelie all the time (cold air is denser, so you make more power).

I also live in rainy Western Washington and can tell you the Uly does just fine in the rain. I ride to work every day, regardless of weather.

I'm planning to pick up the Blue 2009 on Saturday and can give you a good price on my black 2008 XT. Send me a messege if you are intereted

I have done many long days at or below freezing and over five hundred mile days in rain. These things love cold once initially properly warmed up.

Cold day Wheelies, yep!

Thanks for the replies, guys! Sounds like the Uly behaves much better in bad weather than the Superhawk.

I like the fact that it is a lot lighter than the 650 Vstrom and Versys and way more power.

Lighter than many of the most popular sport touring bikes and has better suspension than most too!

I'm sorry if someone already mentioned this but Peter Egan of Cycleworld has and loves a Buell Ulysses. A few years back he spoke about it in one of his articles and all he could do was sing it's praises. In my opinion I Love by XT. It does everything well, and it's been quite reliable in the 10miles I've put on it in under 2 years. Some aftermarket support is getting a little difficult but there is no problem getting stock parts. I live in CT so my riding is similar to the O.P.s, and the only thing you need is a taller windscreen (I love my madstad) and the extenders from the handguards and you'll be good to go!

Well if you keep your riding down to a reasonable amount like Bukwylde, say 3-5 miles per year, I doubt you'll ever need replacement parts...
