So I'm still new to my Uly and getting things figured out. Is it possible to download new fuel maps to a stock ECM via ECM Spy or must one buy a $600 "programmable" ECM or $300 pre-programmed ECM from IDS? |

Not done it myself, but guys were really into it several years back. They always stating to "make sure you do a copy of your original maps before doing any changes". I am certain they were altering their original ECM with a paid for version of ECM SPY. I don't believe the free version went that far. |

Might want to look into this some more. First off, yes, the stock ECM can be reprogrammed. Even when Buell was still in operation there were updates that the dealers installed. Your profile says that you have an 08. This is the part I'm fuzzy on. Up until recently, ECMSpy only worked on bikes up to 07. If you had an 08 or newer bike you had to use TunerPro. The problem here is that the gentleman that supported TunerPro is no longer supporting it as I understand it. It was free and the files are still out there in cyberspace, you just need to purchase a cable to connect to the bike. I thought I read somewhere that there is a new version of ECMSpy that incorporates TunerPro in some form, it's just not free. Hopefully someone here can shed more light on the subject. |

The 08 and newer require tunerpro or the paid for version of ECMSPY. I have tuned my 06 with the free version of ECMSPY but the first thing I did was download my original maps and saved them to a disk and on another computer. The proper way is to record a riding session but I never got that far. I've been tuning carbs by the seat of my pants for many years and was able to do a decent job on my bike. It is smooth and responsive now. Before doing any tuning be very sure your intake is not leaking! |

Thanks for the info, I still can't find out how much the fee is on the ECM website. Is there a known problem of intakes leaking on these bikes? Because my off-idle throttle response is poor, especially when at operating temps and I occasionally get some popping, which could indicate a lean condition resulting from an intake leak. I'll get out the can of starting fluid this week and check for leaks. I pulled the plugs last week and did a compression test. Plugs looked good and compression at 150 PSI both cylinders. |

Yes, they are hard to seal up, it took me 6 tries one Summer to get it right! Some folks don't have any problems. Luck of the draw I guess. If you find yourself having to slip the clutch past a bad spot during take off your intake is leaking. |

ontheroad68: as of last year the fee was 72.50 usd to the papworth hospital in Germany . that is how Gunter set it up. that is for one style of ecm. they are serialed as to the year and fitment. that is one license for the one ecm. if you wish to do more than one style ecm, each would be 72.50 usd. there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of immediate support as Gunter seems to be hard to get ahold of sometimes. now, phase 2: if you decide to go this route, email or start the process from the machine that you will be running the program on. when all is done , the software is licensed to the machine you installed it on. that's the way it is. I bought a hp notebook to do this as its small and fits in bag on bike. fairly new, so I don't expect failure soon. altho today , in data logging, notebook decided to do windows updates during log. only got 23 minutes of what was a 45 minute ride. yeah, a pisser. anyhow, any other questions you may have , just give a holler. |

Ontheroad68 - Once you get ECMSpy an intake leak may be spotted by checking the TPS reading. At least it was in my case. Normally on idle the throttle position should be set to ~5% to get those 1100 RPM. If it's much lower than that (like 2% or even 0%) it might mean the missing part of air is sucked through somewhere else. Provided the TPS itself is not broken ofc. That's my understanding and I think it's quite logical. |

First step is ALWAYS to do a proper TPS zero. AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE. Then, see how it behaves before you throw money at it. |

Thanks for all the info, I'll get started on this in a couple of weeks as soon as I finish some house projects. I just got my Madstad screen in the mail so I'll probably paint the bike fist. Thanks again, Kevin |

Hunger, you are correct. I mentioned that in a thread several years ago as I found the same issue. That's the first thing I noticed when trying to get mine to seal. |

Ontheroad, you off idle response and popping could be caused by some modifications. Simply running the K&N filter and the "open air box" mod could cause your symptoms as well. |

$300 pre-programmed ECM from IDS? The advantage and reason I went this route was that the original ECM stays unmolested and safely locked away. That and I only know enough tuning to be detrimental to Lil Red. Figure out what exhaust you want to run prior to ordering from IDS. |

Oh, if the ECM has not been relocated on an 08 XT with low seat, move it. |
