They structured the business very oddly. I'm sure you could interpret the income in a huge array of directions. H-D always seemed to treat the BMC as a foreign competitor. BMC had to buy the engines from H-D as if they were not a related company. I read that it cost BMC more money to make a Blast than they were payed. |

I also had it on good authority that Buell could purchase a state-of-the-art, DOHC, 143 HP Rotax V-twin from Austria for MUCH less than they could buy a Sportster-derived lump from HD. That's insane. |

They can do revisionist history all they like but Buell was envisioned as being the R&D boys for HarLee, they weren't supposed to really succeed as a manufacturer. Small wonder they decided to pull the plug when Buell got in a position to purchase Rotax motors and were poised to branch into dirt bikes. What the hell good was any of that going to do HarLee? |
