A quick tire review. I have had the Shinko 009 Raven on two different Uly's that I have owned and I have pretty different experiences with them. 09 XB12XP 009/005 R/F Stable in the corners Good drop in Solid in the rain Confident and sticky from cold 10 XB12X 009/009 R/F Seems skittish at speed Good drop in Squirmed in the rain I could get the rear to slide out in the corners at any temp under moderately aggressive riding skipped around on a cold morning I completed a 500 mile road trip a month or so ago on my 10' X running mostly twisty Ozark 2 lane, but I decided to do some gravel and hard pack riding along with it. The Uly did flawless on the rough roads and got me out the other side to nice two lane again and back to the house. A little later that week the bike had an electrical issue and I slowly fixed it during the last month. So, flash forward to this weekend, I load up the bike to take it to the in-laws for some Thanksgiving week riding. When I get to the in-laws, I notice the rear tire is flat. After careful examination, I have at least 4 punctures (deep cuts) into the tire and several slashes into the tread. After spraying the tire down, I see to many holes to plug. So that kills the week of riding. Summary, I think the 009 is pretty good, high mileage tire that can hold on to it's internet reputation fairly well. My personal experience would suggest that depending on the front tire you use, you may get a completely different riding experience. With the 009's F/R, you do NOT want run these tires under aggressive riding in the twisties unless you are prepared for the step out in the rear. The 009's also seemed to vary on the cold runs in the morning between the bikes and I never could pinpoint why. The way the 009 front tire is built, it seemed to follow every line in the road and under raining conditions felt like it was squirming around if you hit any kind of puddle or standing water. You also do NOT take a moderately loaded Uly down gravel and or dirt roads with these tires on as you run the risk of destroying the rear at least. Lastly, I think as with most things, manufacturing processes can vary based on any numbers of things. I believe that the two different experiences I had with these 009's could be related to the manufacturing process. For comparison, I have ran two different sets PR3's on the same bike about a year apart and the bike had no difference in handling. Just my 2 cents.... Troll away! |

Thanks for the report! I think expensive tires are cheap insurance so I usually stick with the good stuff. I have loved the PR2's and the Pirelli Trails. I think PR4's might be my next set. Sorry you lost out on riding, that really sucks. On another note, we need to meet up in Arkansas some time. I have yet to ride down there and I even have a friend living there so I'm out of excuses not to get my raggity a$$ down there! |

IMO, the Shinko Raven 009 is a good tire for the money. Your mileage and experience WILL vary! |

"... Thanksgiving Week riding." The week is young. Can you get a new tire and still have a few day to ride? |

Tootal, I love to ride with you again Sir! I have been mulling over the idea of putting together a meet n greet in the Ozarks next year. Nothing too formal, most likely a lot like the Little Switzerland meet up earlier this year. Good riding, Good Company and Good Food. I will see what I can put together. |

That sounds like a great idea! The southern Missouri and Eureka Springs Arkansas area has great riding. Please keep me in the loop on this adventure. |
