Can someone talk me out of getting a KTM 1190R. I can't see getting rid of the xp since I sorted it for my height and other likes. 35000 and has always made it home. I'm just passing on stuff (offroad) that is dangerous on my Bueller. Ask me how I know. This would be bike 6. I think I might have a problem. Help |

Other than the XP, what rides do you have? |

I have an 06 Uly and a 08 990 Adv. S. Went on a 2850 mile ride with a 1190R while on my 990. We covered some terrain that would have been a real challenge on the Uly. Sand, mud and rock that we covered on the Ktms would have been a real problem with the 17 front tire and the limited ground clearance. My 990 runs very well and I never felt I was giving much up to the 1190 on or off road. The Uly is super fun but if I could only have one bike and have the ability to go more places I would choose the Ktm. For road work and only dirt roads I'd stick to the Uly. |

I did ride a new 1190 Adv while at the Ktm rally and really appreciated the bike. The adjustable seat height was super nice, my 990 is really tall for me. The power was smoothe and abundant but again it was on a demo ride. For the price difference of my 990 v an 1190 I'd buy what I currently have again. |

response Toolinround I need to sit on the 990, it looks like it might be taller than the 1190. LEg room is a deal breaker. 6'4 with 8' legs. Love the uly but wish I could transform to my drz many times, so the trail is passed by. Thinking the 1190 might be more like the drz but fear the 990 might cripple me if I wanted to slab home. Also the uly is what it is and I love it. But I drive it and plan routes like a shark, always keep moving. Last time I off roaded for any distance it ran very hot. Made it fine but Not its real element. I don't feel right running it that way very long. 990 looks killer. |

Timbobuell, My 990 is the S model which I believe stands for stilts required. A guy of your height would have no trouble. I also have highway pegs which are great to have. We did around 585 miles from Taos NM. to Phoenix and I was comfortable but I'm 5'11" not 6'4". The guy I bought my 990 from is the guy that rode the new 1190R and he is 6'5 or 6'6. He did not complain but had hwy pegs and lowered pegs on the 1190. The only thing I noticed while riding with him was that if he had his traction control set for the road and forgot to change modes to offroad the bike just stopped moving forward in the middle of technical hills, just something to get used to, not really a problem. Here are a few pics.

Thanks for the input. I've heard of that problem with the throttle by wire, also seat and leg heat, and airbox dirt leakage. Maybe its best to stay with the sorted and trusty Uly until some of the 1190 r kinks are worked out. Which has more seat to peg room, 1190 or 990? Plan on keeping my Buell regardless. Rode about 300 miles the other day with my gs buddy. We always seem to switch out and I was ready to get back on my bike. Torque, seat comfort and the soul of that thunderstorm is mesmerizing. He did roll right up one section of uphill rocky terrain that the uly heaved and bucked on. It was weird that he later complained about having to slip his clutch much. I clutch slipped minimal on same section. GS turns quicker, seems I can pick a better line on the bimmer where the uly sort of runs over stuff I'm trying to dodge. No perfect bike for everything, which brings me full circle to the interest in the ktm. Just keep thinking the xb12xp can't go forever. |

Are you running the stock primary or the XB9? If you're still stock then lowering the gearing will help a lot off road, in fact I haven't had to slip my clutch anymore on those rocky uphill climbs. |

"Maybe its best to stay with the sorted and trusty Uly until some of the 1190 r kinks are worked out." That wasn't a kink he was referring to. The traction control has different setting for street and off-road. You just need to use the right setting for the right application. It sounds like you just have a sickness, and I am familiar with the disease. Logic is not the remedy, and we both know you didn't come here to have anyone talk you out of buying it - quite the opposite. Right? I wish I could help you with your plight to stay on a sensible path. That said, you really should get the 1190. |

The traction control is just a setting you need to have set for the conditions to get the benefit, not a problem. The Uly really shines in a few areas compared to my Ktm. The Uly owns the corners and is more stable on pavement at higher speeds (Ktm has tkc80 front and Heidi on rear)as well as gets about 20% better fuel economy. The 1190 got considerably better mpg than either 990 on our trip. My 990 out powers my Uly on top but not down low. I sure hope EBR targets the Ktm when they do the Adv bike. |

The KTM Superduke 1290R is the bike I'd really like, but the Ulysses is such a value for money bike and pleasing, fun ride I'd never sell it. |

I'm not going to help you say no, either. Seriously thinking of an 1190 (not an R) myself. Almost bought a demo for a good price from a friend's dealership, but he sold it 2 days before I called him with my decision! I would also keep my Uly, at least for a while, and instead sell my 2000 BMW R1200C, which is now worth more money than the Uly. The Uly is great, but nothing lasts forever, and I am really impressed with the stability electronics on the KTM. that is partially offset by the fear that the bike is too complex, but I don't want to live in the past forever! We will see. Urgency is past now that winter is coming, so I am waiting to see if the local dealer is ready to sell his demo soon. |

I don't think an 1190R exists. Or am I wrong? |

They do exists. My closest dealer who I've purchased from before has one, but it is tricked out with all the ktm goodies I personally do not want. He is only getting two for next year and needs a deposit. The one I sat on sits too low with the (I think) specialty seat as mounted. I would like to sit on one with a high seat before committing. So to reply to your statement there is one at cycle specialty, Fayetteville ga. 20k with all the ktm farkles. |

The R model goes with a 21" front wheel instead of 19", and does not have the electronically adjustable suspension. It also adds in a bunch of off-roadish protection items (skid plate, engine guards). I'm not a fan of 21" front wheel because I am mostly on street. |

"I'm not a fan of 21" front wheel because I am mostly on street." Sounds like you need one of those new BMW S1000XR's then rather than a KTM! Looks like a pretty sweet package if pavement is your priority. |

Yes, that would make sense, but I am a big KTm fan back from my enduro racing days, and have heard some scary warranty numbers lately on BMW from a general manager of a dealer that is a good friend. He recently switched from years of BMW's (and a GS1200) to a Yamaha Super Tenere. I'm not quite ready to go as mainstream as a Japanese bike yet, though. The BMW marketing speak does pretty much match the way I have always used my Uly. |

A friend has a Ktm sm 990 and it's crazy the amount of oil it goes trough, 7000kilometers 4 liters of oil consumption. Has any one done a demo ride on the Triumph Tiger Explorer? How did you feel the bike? |

"Triumph Tiger Explorer?" I've demoed one (and there are at least two guys on this forum that replaced their Ulys with one). Silky smooth and very powerful, with a very comfortable ride. The bike is narrow at the seating area and easy to get your feet on the ground and has some nice touches like cruise control and an adjustable seat. It seems very nimble for a big bike, though I didn't really get the opportunity to push it in that regard. The Tiger Explorer gets a big thumbs-up from me. |

I did a demo ride of 2 hours on high way, mountain twisties, and used to the uly... 2 different worlds. Here in spain the price i payed for my Uly when new was close to the cost of the Triumph now days. |

My 990 doesn't have an oil consumption problem. 3000 miles and barely noticeable oil level change. |
