My 06'X....

So in my usual unconventional fashion I went against the grain and did a WHOLE lot of things at once....

At 51,000+ miles she had been rode hard and put up wet my times than I care to remember, actually Damn near every time. Started running poorly the last 1000 miles or so, and then started backfiring thru the intake....

Rotated the engine for the first time ( that was fun....) And wound up doing a complete top end rebuild. There was such a large carbon deposit behind the valves I'm sure they weren't able to seat fully. While I was at it, New throttle body shaft courtesy of TOOTAL (thanks again BTW) and also replaced TPS, O2 sensor, head temp sensor, breather valves, ebr race ecm (drummer can tuned) comfort kit, had the can and headers ceramic coated, cam sensor, New bearings in the idler pulley and of coarse fresh fluids.

HOLY SHIT!!!!

Just got back from a small test ride after TPS reset and idle adjustment and never went over 2500 rpms and it still scared the crap outta me. This thing has never ran so good!!!

Pistons, rings and cylinders were all amazingly still within specs and on a prayer reused them as I ran outta funds. Somehow after all those hard miles you could still clearly make out the original hone marks on the cylinders.

Hope it stays this way and I don't have any other suprises....

Keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down y'all!!!

and for the million dollar question (pun intended): how much money in parts, and how much labor time did you spend? If you would have had it done at a dealer how much would the labor have been?

Well it took me six months cuz life kinda gets in the way of projects.... But I think it came in around $1100 or so.... Not bad when the labor was free

Scratch that, more like $1500.... And I am sure there were things that I replaced that didn't need it, but hey.... Now I have spare parts just in case and I shouldn't have to worry about another rotation anytime soon.

Congrats! Good to hear.

Mind if I turn this into an oil thread and ask what you think kept your cylinder walls so new?

I had my intake off at about 50,000 and was amazed at the amount of (incredibly hard) carbon build up in there. That was the only reason I put a spooge dump on the breathers.

HD syn 3 every 3000 miles. Had the same hard carbon buildup in the heads piled up behind the valves.

That's awesome Geoff! So I'm assuming the bushings were ok. Good to hear!
I love it when a plan comes together!

I'm over 30k and found the same thing on my Uly when I did my top end rebuild. The pistons were carboned, but in good shape, and the origional cross hashing was still on the cylinder wall. They were perfect. Nicisil is amazing stuff.

I bought it used at 10k, and use only full synthetic 20w50, generally either Amsoil or Mobil 1 Motorcycle oil.
