On the rear wheel, how long is the bearing spacer supposed to be? I read that if you over torque the rear axle nut, the bearing spacer will be somewhat crushed, leading to bearing failure. It's only a $12 part, should it be changed with the bearings? Thanks for your collective knowledge. | ||

I asked the same question a while back (about spacer length) but was never able to find the answer. If you are pulling a bearing out to replace the bearing, you will more than likely damage the spacer or at least put a nick in it. I would not chance re-using an old spacer, even if you do get it out undamaged. Unless you do all of your own wrenching, it will be hard to tell if some ham-fisted mechanic may have over-torqued the axle at some time and crushed the spacer even slightly. It is only soft aluminum, as far as I can tell. If you are changing from the old style wheel to the newer 2010 wheel, you will need a new spacer anyway as it is much shorter. Oh, by the way, when my bearing failed at 7300 miles, the wheel dropped down and rubbed on the spacer and cut a groove in it, rendering it useless anyway. As long as the spacer is not obviously crushed just take it and put it in the wheel and make sure is the same or longer than the width of the inner bearing surface. If it's less than it will trash your bearings. | ||

Tootal makes a very good point. If the spacer is as he stated and you install the bearings properly, there will be no issues. | ||
