i am seriously considering buying a Redverz Series II Expedition Tent...as my girl and i both enjoy camping and it would save us a boatload of loot over hotels when taking weekend trips..My question is....is it possible to fit a tent...2 bags and a few days worth of clothes whilst 2 up on a Uly? Anyone done this? Also...what camping equipment do you guys use when on the bike? | ||

I've not camped "two up" but I managed to get a 4 man tent, a sleeping bag & pad, clothing for 5 days, a folding chair, a cooler & cooking equipment, food, 3 liters of water & sundry other stuff onto my Uly without side or top hard bags. It just takes a bit of planning and some experimentation. YMMV. Good luck. Chris C | ||

My Uly has all three hard bags on all of the time. I tote two tents, a fairly large cooler, camping chair, rain gear, clothes, shoes and all of that other crap that I think I may need. With that I can manage to leave the pilon open if needed. Taking my wife with me for a weekend at a resort is more than equal to tent camping. I like to tell her one side bag is for her stuff, one for mine, and the top bag and tank bag are for the bike. Somehow I end up with half of a side bag for my rain gear, and stuff my other cloths and such in the top bag. If you have doubts about weight loads, don't worry about it too much as long as it is balanced and your tire maintenance is up to par. The Uly is a truck. We have run three day weekend trips two up with the load at over 500 lbs. | ||

It can be done. Shop and pack like a backpacker...I have a 10 degree sleeping bag that packs smaller than my head, a eureka! 3 person dome tent that packs to 14" long, and typically go light on clothes and heavy on spare underclothes. Maybe one pair of jeans, one jacket or fleece, but lots of socks and boxers and tee shirts. "And for everything else...there's MasterCard" | ||

Here it is:  This is the best picture I could find. It's not quite as described. The chair is missing! I use a Jet Boil butane cooker. It, the water & food (dehydrated camping supplies etc') are in the blue cooler. The tank bag shown is not what I loaded the previously listed stuff into. (I utilize a larger tank bag for my extended trips.) The "beaver tail" is wonderfully adaptable for luggage & the barrel bag w/"Jax Rugby" on it holds the tent, sleeping bag & shoes. The Black bag holds clothing etc' and is attached to the tail w/velcro straps. The tank bag holds sundries & my rain gear. Remember to change your suspension settings! Chris C. | ||

Here is how I do it...it wasn't two up, but it was really cold so the bag on the passenger seat just had an extra heavy sweatshirt and a second much thicker sleeping bag.  The goose down sleeping bags pack up a lot smaller than the standard cotton ones and plenty warm enough for 3 season camping. Most of the food I cook when camping is dehydrated so it takes up very little room. Your wife may not like this kind of food though...you might want to consider a collapsable cooler so you could make a grocery run for meals when you get to your campsite. The two red bottles mounted to the panniers contain fuel...one gasoline for the bike (in case I run out) and one with alcohol for a small alcohol stove made out of a beer can. I just did a 100 mile 10 day backpack trip in New Mexico went up to 12500 feet. You can pick up some great stuff on EBAY. Get a thermorest Neo Air Trekker, more comfortable bigger and packs down to about the same size. You won't need a cot. Big Agnes also makes a sleeping system for two but it will cost you. You might try and get a MSR on ebay if you want to go with that type of stove. That one has good reviews however. Try and fine a good synthetic sleeping bag. Cheaper than goose down and packs small. Normally rule is the smaller and lighter the more expensive. For a chair I generally take a cheapo folding camp chair. You can get them for $8-$10 & always leave them behind if you don't feel like toting them home after the camp is over. I pack it on top of the barrel bag & just bungee it on. Chris C. | ||
