Anyone currently running these? They showed up a while back on some tire threads. D616's are gone and need a to replace with an affordable, long lasting, primarily street tire. Thanks D- |

both sets of 009's have proven just fine for commuting, but you can usually catch a set of pirelli's on cycle gears spring sale for the same price as a set of shinko's |

I nearly ordered a 009 rear and a 005 front, but after the positive reports on BadWeb, ADV Rider, and elsewhere, I ended up buying *two* full sets of Conti Trail attacks at bargain basement prices. One set from a local shop who was retiring from business, and the other from eBay. The eBay tires are two years old, and were $219/set with free shipping in the USA: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Continental-Trail-Attack-M otorcycle-Tires-Buell-Ulysses-120-70-17-180-55-17- PAIR-/131134099151?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessorie s&hash=item1e88338ecf&vxp=mtr If all goes well, I won't be buying street rubber for a good 25,000km. Ray, that's a bit disconcerting to hear. I haven't pushed the TAs too hard in the corners yet (there aren't a lot of good twisties in these parts, unfortunately). The set I just mounted up are the ones I bought locally, and front and rear are both made in Germany. Not sure about the eBay set (still wrapped up), but I suspect the front of that set is are made in Korea -- whether or not that matters, who knows? |

I have the 009 and 005 combo on the Uly. I am a big guy and notoriously hard on my bikes and tires. My observation... - Slow to heat up and until they do get up to temp, avoid the paint and tar snakes. - Long wearing with good grip once they hit operating temp. - They transition lean to lean very nice - I run them at 36F and 40R. The road feel is smooth and confident. |

There is an old adage that says 'buy a 2 dollar helmet for a 2 dollar head' and the same thing goes for tyres/brakes on motorcycles. The only contact between your large expensive motorcycle and the road are the tyres, so put the best tyres you can afford on it, not just because they are cheap. The other old adage of 'you get what you pay for' tends to prove true all to often too |

I had a set of 009's. They were inexpensive, but I didn't think they were of poor quality. Ultimately, I didn't like the way the bike handled though. I can't describe it, but it felt wobbly. Like you weren't stuck to the ground. I got rid of them when the front picked up a nail. |

Every bike I ever rode with Shinkos felt like crap. People constantly complain about "cheaply made Chinese crap". I don't understand why someone would put it on their expensive motorcycle which kills you if you crash. I guess it's ok if you're a parking lot pimp or spend your rides straight up and down, but I wouldn't pee on them to put out a fire. |

Well, actually, Shinko bought Yokohama's motorcycle tire manufacturing division, and they're made in Korea, not China, but don't let facts get in the way of a good story. I'm guessing you don't like guys who put car tires on the back of their FJR's and Goldwing's either. |

Df3112 Posted on Wednesday, July 09, 2014 - Shinko Raven 009 Anyone currently running these? Yes; My Ulysses is on the second set, as a matter of fact. First set gave me 9k + miles. The Shinkos are the longest wearing tires I have tried. Conti Motion Pro's were the worst, at a little over 3k miles. New, they feel no different, to me, than any other tire I've tried. However as the front wears, the turn in, becomes "floppy." Rear tire at about 9600 miles. The lean angle tread was to the wear bars before the center.
Front
Now for the disclaimer: I do not intensionally take Ulysses off road... so I can not speak to the non pavement performance of these tires. I do not do track days. Shinkos work fine for me and the way I ride. I do not push to find their limit. |

I get 10k+ out of my Michelin pilot road 2s and road 3s. More $ per tire...LESS per mile. Not good dirt tires...but excellent tread life and handling. Since my riding has gravitated away from dirt lately I have a set of PR2s on the uly now and love the way they make the bike behave. I refuse to buy a "cheap" tire for the reasons above. Got a cheap brain? Stick it in a cheap helmet. Same for tires, and brakes. Me and my bike are well worth the price of quality tires as far as staying safe and getting the maximum enjoyment out of my rides. |

The car tire thing was not a joke. Not at all. It's not a super common practice, but it's not unusual either in the serious long-distance/Iron Butt community. If you're running in the Iron Butt Rally, you're doing about 11,000 miles in 11 days, just during the rally itself. Running a car tire on the rear means not having to do a tire change during the rally. Or for people who travel extensively on their bikes - like 50,000 miles or more a year, that's a lot of tires. I'm not saying it's a good idea, or that I'd ever recommend it, but I'm most definitely NOT making it up. Here's an article on the practice. There's a lot of info on the FJR Forum as well. http://www.ridermagazine.com/browse-by-type/tires/ tales-from-the-dark-side-putting-car-tires-on-moto rcycles.htm/ |

Thanks to ALL for the feedback. Currently deciding between 1 Shinko Raven 009 2 Michelin PR-2's 3 Perelli Diablo's I can appreciate everyones personal feelings. However, just because a "item" cost more, does not automatically make it superior in quality or performance. Those are earned. |

PR2's are consistently considered to be excellent tires. I have the Bridgestone Battleax tires on my bike and I've been very pleased as well. I hated the Diablo's. They wore out WAY too quick - well before I anticipated and left me stuck out in South Dakota as a result. |

My Uly ONLY runs with Dunlap tires! An American made motorcycle deserves an American made tire! No exceptions on my motorcycles or it's tires! They have to be made in America! |

Currently deciding between 1 Shinko Raven 009 2 Michelin PR-2's 3 Perelli Diablo's Of your 3 choices I have only used Shinkos. My '06 Ulysses has had the following tire sets. Dunlop DD616 5800 miles Bridgestone Battle AX 023 5300 miles each (2 sets.) Conti Motion Pro 3300 miles Shinko 009 9600 miles They all worked well, "FOR ME." Your mileage & experience will vary. |

Id try to find some michelins for a great price, and if you don't; a shinko will more than likely get you by just fine. The diablo will leave you wishing for better tread wear Shinkos handle better that a 245/55/17 Yokohama S-drive, I can say that for sure |

Nothing like a tyre thread ... I have about 1K miles on a set of Metzler Tourance Next tyres. These shoes have made my Uly a completely different bike. Highly recommended. Barry Hollister, CA |

Oil & Tires - Ask 100 people, get 100 DIFFERENT answers. From my experiences. Did not care for Dunlops on my M2 or my SV650s (had two of those). Very good luck with Bridgestone Battleax BT014's. Older tire, but I sure liked them on my M2. The Conti Motions on my Uly were fine and lasted over 10K on the front and rear. I'm not a wheelie/stoppie guy, but I commute and live in the twisties, and the front wheel has lower mileage than the rear... Put Pirelli Scorpion Trails on the bike recently and they are fine. Feel better than the Conti Motions. FYI- the Conti Motion tires were VERY nervous on a gravel road. I have not had the Pirelli's off road yet. If you are 100% road guy, I highly recommend the Michelin Pilot Road (I think they are on version 4 now). I had those on my 2nd SV650s and they were good handling and lasted forever. Plus a day. |

I ran a set of Ravens a couple of years ago, I liked them fine. They turn in a bit smoother (or slower if you don't like smoother)than the Pirelli's the bike came with which suited my old man reflexes just fine. I was faster in the twisties on the Shinko's than with any other tire I've used because I wasn't dealing with diving too deep into the apex. I've got an almost new set of Michelin PR3s on now but since I bought the KLR and the Royal Star Venture I hardly ride the Uly any more so I really haven't had the bike anywhere that I can really test the PR3s out. I'd discount the opinion of anyone who claims the Ravens are junk. They may not suit a given individuals tastes but they are a safe quality tire. |

I have ran shinko ravens for the last 5 or 6 years on uly and have never had a problem. I agree you get what you for and I live by that mantra, but with this tire you get a lot for what you pay for. Long lasting, plenty of traction. Make sure they are warm and running to the edge is not a problem. I am on my fourth rear and second front. They also have a flatter contour on the rear tire. I have ran various other tires as well, but $100 for a rear that lasts 7k or more is good for me. |

I ran the shinkos on my xb9sx and have pilot road 3's on my Uly. The pilot roads seem to be wearing Mich better and the traction is better. The shinkos were fine but when it comes time to get new tires if the road 3's are within $100 for the set I'll buy them. |

Advoutlander Posted on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 - 02:56 am: What are they like in the gravel? Depends on if you are running conventional, syn blend or full synthetic. It goes with out saying that a Paper air filter increases traction on gravel across the board, no matter the tire brand/model. ... Yes, even the TKC 80's |
