Jeez, does anybody realize how much oil is still in the crankcase after draining everything else? For convenience and the fact that it's a perfect working height I have the engine in the back of my S-10, with a locking cap for security and weather protection. Lost a little oil Sat. when the oil pump came off, I could deal with that. Today I was ready to split the cases. Put the engine on it's side and look out. Luckily I had a pan handy but still missed some. There was almost half a quart in the pan in addition to what spilled. Live and learn. A few thoughts on things overall. When the manual simply says "remove left crankcase half", it's not that simple. The damn thing is glued together with sealant. Had to put half the bolts back in and start tapping them with a hammer and punch until I finally heard that hollow sound. The tops of the pistons as well as the intake valves had some heavy carbon deposits. Guess I'm going to do some kind of breather reroute upon reassembly. Looks like I'll need some parts that I didn't count on. The 2-3 sliding dog is blued on the third gear side as well as matching wear on the shift fork. Now the question will be why. I don't use the shifter as a foot rest, besides, it's only on the third gear side. Well, last task is to press the cluster out of the bearings. After that it's getting sent to a tranny shop that hopefully can answer these questions. |
