Had a crash last week on Gorge Washington Bridge. Don't really remember what happened but the bastard took off. Thankfully nothing is broken, but the bike took some beating My only key got jammed in the ignition and while I was taken by ambulance the guy that took the bike got the key out, tried to even it using the seat lock key hole and broken it in half, also jamming it in there. He got it out the by breaking the key assembly and left me a note with two piece of the key... To his credit, he did even out the handle bars a little. Anyways, need advise on how to get it back on the road. First thing i guess is the key. I called one harley dealership but they said don't make keys for buells. Anybody know if it's true for all them? If it is, I'll need to buy a whole ignition set, fuel cap and rear seat off ebay or can I get somebody to create one of the two broken pieces? Thanks, any suggestions are appreciated. |

Sorry to hear about the wreck, I hate the GWB (and the whole metro area in general, but that is for another thread) You can order a pair of brand new keys from a Buell dealer (not any HD dealer), it is $20. I've got some before from Liberty HD, which isn't far from you. They can use your VIN to look up the key code. You can order a whole new ignition/gascap/seat lock assembly, but it will be quite a bit more expensive than a pair of keys. |

If you can't easily go the route Froggy suggested, take the broken key bits to a locksmith. Of they're not too mangled, they should be able to make a duplicate. There's a thread or two on BadWeb listing compatible key blanks. Good luck! |

Also, bring your title into the HD dealer for proof of ownership. They won't give you a duplicate without it. |

My only key... Important safety tip: NEVER be in a situation where you have to say that again. Duplicates are cheap. Universal key blank that will work; any decent locksmith will have one: ILCO X270 (You likely won't find one at Walmart, Home Depot, etc.) Blank similar to factory key with blue plastic: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Buell-Motorcycle-Key-Blank -Blast-Firebolt-Lightning-Ulysses-/281238788224?pt =Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item417b235880 &vxp=mtr |

Ugh. Just bought an 08 Uly X from the original owner. He supposedly had a spare key for me that he was going to mail me, but it doesn't seem like that will ever come to fruition. :-/ Took the Uly up to Lowes the other day to get hardware for the Outdoorsman rack set I just got from New Castle HD as well as to (hopefully) get new spare keys made. They didn't have the right blanks. So what do you think happened 10min later when I went to unlock the seat? Yep- snapped in 2. I was able retrieve the broken piece. Going to a local locksmith later today to hopefully get new ones made- I will post back to see if he is able to do it from my 2 broken pieces. I just got off the phone with the original Buell dealer (Schaeffers HD in Reading, PA) for my plan B option. It would be like $28 for ONE key. App. 10 business days. They said I can email or fax pics of my registration and drivers license in order to do this- no need to go there in person (I won't have the title back until Albany decides to send me a new one...usually 2-3 months). Wish me luck! |
