Hello! I have had some issues and looking for some advice from the group if at all possible. Recently I've been getting some mild stumbling / loss of power for 5 seconds or so at highway speeds (75mph). Check engine light will come on sometimes, and stay on until I get below 60, then go back off. I checked oil levels (was a little low) and cables under seat (all look fine / no rubbing.) Today it stepped it up - serious stumbling on the highway, loss of power then back, then stumble, back fine (for 3-5 miles or so), check engine light would go on and off at odd intervals (on for 5 seconds, off for 30 seconds, flash on/off quick, on for 10 seconds, etc - seemed very random.) Got off the highway and rode back roads home - drove fine the whole way. Pulled codes: 13 - REar O2 Sensor always Rich/lean/inactive 16 - Battery Voltage too low/high (just put a brand new battery in it this Dec. - MotoBatt MBTX12U 21 - Exhaust Valve always open/closed - voltage too low - I bought this used - in the service manual the previous owner provided - he has written down "Hawk Performance Exhaust Installed 2008" - So it would seem like it might not have the Exhaust Valve? Any help / advice / things I should check? The only one that makes sense to me is the O2 sensor - would that cause this? Should I switch that out? Thank you all for any help! Todd |

On my 9 my bike lost power on the highway but got it back at lower speed/rpm. It didn't stumble tho. It turned out to be my fuel pump. But for $30 and something that takes 30 min to change you might as well start with the o2. PS you can check the o2 function in ecmspy. You can search my screen name on YouTube or buell o2 sensor and see a couple videos I made from when my o2 died. |

Check for cracks in your ECM. |

Something else to check is your TPS. Some of your symptoms are similar to what my 06 did when the black wire was pulling out of the TPS body. |

Sometimes the codes showing up will be the result of a non code event. Loose battery cables or ground wires can cause a momentary power loss making the ECM read all kinds of things when the engine cuts out momentarily. |

Things i realized I left off - it's an 06 with ~20,000 miles. Thanks for your help. I think I'll plan on replacing the O2 sensor with one from Autozone / O'Reily's this weekend to see if that one works (found a post where a Bosch one appeared to be the same - it's 19, local Harley wants $50 for it.) While I'm at it I'll check the ECM for cracks / any signs of wear and check over the TPS (mental note - read up on what a TPS is - other than a coversheet from Office Space.) Thanks again all, I really appreciate the help. First bike, and not really a big mechanic, but determined to learn. I don't currently have ECMspy / the wire to hook up to it, but I'm seriously debating getting it now. |

You're going to need the cable and ecmspy to properly diagnosis the problem. |

It sounds like the ECM, but there is also a 1-to-3 wire splice on the left side of the bike running between fork leg and frame into the front fairing that can cause similar issues if the splice breaks up or that wire breaks. You should check it out, and I would move the splice into the fairing even if it seems OK. (There is also a second such splice that should also be moved while you are at it.) Actually, any of those wires can suffer a potential break due to being crushed by the fork leg. May as well check them all. |

Hello all! Just wanted to update you. Thankfully, was much easier / cheaper than I was afraid of. Two wires that ran into the black plug for the ECM were worn through - and must have been jumping to each other. I put electrical tape over them, did some other general electrical taping where anything looked like it was rubbing, and plugged it all back in. Took it out 40 miles on Saturday, and 150 miles on Sunday... never had an issue. Ran like a dream. Thanks for your help!! |

Wish my issue was that easy. I did run out and look at my wires again after I read your post. Never hurts to quadruple check. Happy for you though. |
