Im buying a uly off my neighbor and im thinking about exhaust ideas. He led me here to talk with you guys because who knows better than owners. It’s a 2008 Uly and I currently have a RS-3 yosi I got dirt cheap im thinking about fabing on. Its off a ZX 12 im wondering if it would be an interesting one off sound!?!? Anyone have experience with a 1203 and a jap exhaust. What do you guys run. Full systems slip ons … what are the price ranges whats gonna sound good but not wake the neighbors if I come home at 11:00pm thanks for any help

not wake the neighbors? Stock. I have tried several home made....and jap slip ons....they all sounded great....and all made the bike run like dog poop. In the end I fitted my stock can back on....and after riding with it....the sound...or lack there of....grows on you.

I agree with the above poster. Stock. It's not so quiet. Mine got louder with age.

+1 on stock.

The bonus is that when you open up the throttle, you really get to hear the intake honk which to me is addictive.

I'm running stock on my 2008 Uly, but at times have considered a Drummer ( http://kdfab.com/ ) or a Spec OPS ( http://specialops-online.com/4436.html ).

Biggest difference (as far as I can see) is the Spec OPS model for the XB12 family retains the power valve. Both use the owner's muffler and mod it (so there's no return to stock), with the exception of the stainless Drummer. Check dyno charts to see if the power gains are where you want them.

An ECM tailored for aftermarket pipes is available from EBR ( http://www.erikbuellracing.com/store/parts-accesso ries/fuel-injection.html ).

Again, I don't have any first-hand experience with an aftermarket exhaust on a Buell, but I'm sure you'll get more advice here soon. Sometimes I think I'd like more sound, but I enjoy the midrange torque with OEM setup (exhaust power valve), and besides I always wear hearing protection while riding anyway.

We sell the Twin Motorcycles Torque Hammer II exhaust. I have one on my bike and absolutely love it. I think it's a nice solution for those that aren't looking for the loudest pipe out there but a little more than stock (performance and sound-wise). It comes with a removable db killer and includes maps for the 03-07 models. Yours being an '08 would need to be remapped alternatively.

Of course, it's not a free solution as the pipe you have is but it's a good one worth considering. Here's the link to it on our site: http://www.5-0dro.com/index.php/specials/twin-moto rcycles-buell-xb-torque-hammer-exhaust-detail

If we can help, please let us know.

You seem to have some "homemade - I can do it" in you. Therefore I will let you in on my little alteration.

I cut a hole in the right side of the can in the rear compartment behind the belt pulley. I then welded a 1 1/4" pipe to the can that exits under the belt guard. It has a little more rumble, but does not become a drone on long trips. It is just enough to enhance permagrin without waking the neighbors.

The mod did not change any of the bike's running characteristics, just added a little noise on the right side and vents some hot exhaust gas. It has been tested about 25,000 miles so far.

Etennuly...I've read other posts where you've talked about this mod...I'm wondering...do you think the extra pipe was necessary? Or would just drilling a hole do the trick?

To the OP: There is a stainless steel drummer, custom stainless skid plate and matching 2008 EBR ECM for sale near Montreal, perhaps 5 hours from you. It looks like the kit that Matt McCuaig had on his bike. Not sure if it is Matt or the new owner that is selling it. Either way, it is a great deal at $500.

If I didn't really like the quiet OEM pipe, I'd be making a road trip to la belle province.

Yes an extension of some sort is needed to get the exhaust and heat outside the rear tire's area, not unlike the stock left tail pipe.

Also, if the end of the can just has holes drilled in it, it will not have a good sound. It will sound more like a leaking muffler.

After I got my 08 XB12XT, I looked around for an exhaust that would improve performance and not kill the great mid-range the bike had. I ended up with the Buell Race pipe (hard to find now and expensive when you do), an Eric Buell Racing ECM that is tuned for that pipe, and a K&N filter. The EBR ECM improves cooling with altered fan operation and alters the programming to improve performance. It also eliminates the power valve but adds top end performance and better cooling fan operation. The sound isn't rude and performance is better all around.

Those Buell Race exhausts are available on ebay but are getting expensive and the quality is going down. Even if they look ragged, know that the can was coated with some pretty good powder-coat from the factory and can be cleaned up with a lot of elbow grease, if it isn't excessively rusted.
