Have been taking the Uly off road a bit more and have really enjoyed it. I am really a dirt biker and got into riding on the street with my sons. A fellow I know just picked up a new KTM 1190 Adventure R and was selling his 990 Adv S (stilts) so I added it to the stable. This is a very tall and very capable off-road bike. I have about 150 miles under my belt. Will give thoughts and comparison later if any interest. |

I had a 950 Adventure. That bike could do things a bike that size just shouldn't be able to do. |

These are very different machines! The KTM seems very large compared to the ULY from the moment you lift it off the side stand. The KTM is much taller and since I only have a 32 inch inseam I don't have much on the ground at a stop. Once in the saddle the KTM is more narrow but also there is a lot going on in front of you with the taller windscreen and fixed fairing. The bike seems bigger on the road. The power is also much different. The KTM might be a bit more powerful up top but it doesn't have the instant torque that the Uly has down low and when you let off the throttle the KTM has much more compression braking. Both have great power and are a lot of fun, just very different experiences. Brakes are also very different. The Uly has a lot more front brake and a much weaker rear brake. The first time I rode the KTM I skidded the rear tire and really had to pull on the front brake lever. After just a few minutes it all seems great, just different. Tires are also very different. The KTM has knobbies with a 21 in front, the Uly has new D616s and are both 17s. On the street the KTM requires a fair amount of effort to turn a corner but you also have to pay attention a bit more at speed, the Uly is actually a bit more enjoyable on the road. Offroad is a different story. The KTM does great in the dirt and in the sand compared to the ULY which is not real confidence inspiring in the sand. The ULY does surprisingly well in the dirt, even single track hills. It suffers from a small front tire and limited ground clearance. The KTM is great as long as you stay on the pegs. In fact, the KTM does a headshake at higher speeds on the pavement but is solid as a rock on dirt at even higher speed. This could be the tires. Fuel consumption is much better on the ULY. Even when riding very spirited the ULY probably gets around 5-10 mpg better. I need to get more miles on the KTM before I have any real mpg numbers. |
