What does the muffler controller and flapper do? I assume that it changes the path of the exhaust, but at what parameters?

Here's a pic showing the muffler internals:



IIRC, the valve is closed at low speed and WOT to slightly increase backpressure and the valve is open in the mid-range RPMs.

Actually, the valve opens at WOT to reduce backpressure and increase throttle response. The valve is closed to improve midrange torque. Remove the air box cover and take a spin in some open area, you'll see the actuator open with WOT.

With my '06, and doing the "remove cover" test Griff mentioned, I found you had to be crazy agressive with whacking the throttle open to get the solenoid to actuate the valve.
On mine at least, the valve is closed nearly all the time under normal conditions.
EBR Tech seemed to confirm that when I was asking them questions this spring to see if their ECM was signalling the solenoid to open (since their ECM's do not throw a code for the muffler actuator).

You don't have to ride it to see the valve function. On my '06 all you have to do is to remove the air box cover (i.e. the "gas tank") so that you can see the valve actuator/servo on top with the cable connected to it. With the bike running in neutral on the kickstand, just goose the throttle, and it will open fully and then return to closed as soon as you let off the gas.

Ha, that's why I said to be in an open area. I don't know if the logic for the muffler is set differently on the earlier bikes or not. I do know that you can hear the difference pretty clearly, even with a full face helmet on. The exhaust note will change to a deeper sound when the valve opens, I can hear it on my '08 accelerating above 3/4 throttle. Remember, that's accelerating, cruising at high throttle it will still be closed.

Or you can try the test procedure for the servo.
With the engine not running, put the kill switch "on", and while holding full throttle, put the ignition switch on without starting the bike.
