My Uly has had an odd problem since I got her a couple months back and while it doesnt seem to be getting worse, Im guessing it isnt going away on its own.

While I am at speed (10 - 80mph doesnt matter) all will be fine and then for an instance it will "hiccup" (cutout??). It happens very quickly and only lasts for a millisecond.

Not sure where to even begin as it happens so quickly and there is almost no way to duplicate. Other than the occasional hiccup it runs excellent.

Sound like a familiar scenario to anyone?

Does your check engine light illuminate when this happens?

Possible bad spark plug wire?
Remove the left side scoop and spray the wires and coil with soapy water with the engine running.

Let me guess here. You start your bike and within a couple of minutes you begin your ride. About a mile or so from your start point it does it's "cough", it clears up and is not heard from again until the next time you ride????

If so, try letting it idle for five minutes before starting out. It is likely just the ECM hitting up it's warmed up stage. Going from open loop to closed loop, or what ever it does as it recognizes a certain temperature switch position.

Mine will do it every time I take off too early in it's warm up staging.

Like Etennuly proposed, I'll get the hiccup if the bike is not good and warm. And it can take the bike a while to warm up if it is cool out. I get it almost every time because my bike's warm-up time is equal to the time it takes me to gingerly put my helmet and gloves on before getting underway.

Now, if you are fully warmed up, I'll say that those hiccups were the first symptoms I experienced as my ECM slowly (over several months) failed. They were identical to the "cold" hiccups (at first anyway), but they could happen anytime and at any speed. As time went on, they became more frequent (and more violent). The hotter the bike was, the greater the issue.

Not saying that is your problem, but it is a possibility worth looking at.

thanks for the replies.

to answer some questions -

Warm up - I let the bike warm up well before riding and the "hiccup" happens at anytime(s) - could be after riding for 5 minutes or after 30 or 60... no real pattern.

Spark Plug wire - that was my initial thought as well and I installed new plugs and wires shortly after I got the bike and thought it might fix the problem - no help.

Check engine light - No lights come on.

It "feels" like the bike is completely cutting out. Its very, very quick however so I cant tell for certain. But because it jerks forward (slightly) immediately after the hiccup, I have to think the engine is cutting out and then back to running.

It happens once.. or twice... usually within a few seconds of each occurrence.

Because im guessing its a "total failure" - im guessing that its an electrical problem.
ECM???

fwiw - most likely unrelated is that my voltmeter reads a little low at times (anywhere between 14.1 and 13.6)

As of now, im not losing any sleep over it. But like I said in the original post.. I dont think its going to go away, or fix itself....

Check the wires to the cam sensor, mine had a rub through that eventually had it shutting off when it would get wet, however it would sputter(randomly cut out for a second, but not often) when dry. It took being wet to find that one.

Make sure your battery cables are tight also.

My bike (06 Uly) sputters when cold as described by Ettenuly and Beuwulf. It seems to run rich on startup (and maybe afterward). I read it may be caused by the AFV sensor needing a rezero. Haven't done that yet, so can't say if that will fix it yet.

Otherwise, I noticed on my bike that there's a wire bundle that goes under the right side of the engine engine case and it was wedged between the lower fiberglass fairing and the hot muffler sheet metal hangar/mount thing. The rubber shrink tubing actually had melt marks around the area where it was being clamped between the fairing and the muffler bracket. Real cheesy coming from the factory like that if you ask me. I took the fairing and shaved a bit of it off to increase the clearance there. I also slightly bent the muffler bracket away from the wire and also put a small sliver of wood between it and the wire to further insulate it from the heat. I also read on another post months ago about a UK guy here who had a similar problem. He also went riding with a German guy that had his bike conk out for a similar reason (pictures and everything in the thread). So trace your wiring on the outside and have a look at it. And take a look at plug wires too, although from what I've read they're not easy to get to.

Let us be clear on this sort of issue. If these bikes are working right you will have NO running issues with it at all. If you do have a problem then it needs looking into to fix it. Some new bikes still have FI issues but the XB does not. I had no problems with my 06 bike and my 10 bikes fueling is just superb.

The General brought up an interesting point about that wire bundle...

I was left stranded once because the friction tape and insulation of the VR wire had been rubbed through by a zip tie used to corral the wiring under there. It was arcing to the exhaust mount. You may want to give that area a good look over.

Also, I see your bike is an '06. Is it still equipped with the 77 connector?

It may be quite awhile before I know the cause. With the limited frequency of occurrence, winter weather limiting riding time and unpredictability of the "hiccup" - knowing for sure that something I did, fixed it.... most likely wont happen until spring.

- I am first looking into connections and wiring (electrical stuff)

- I do have the spy cable and software - so I will also see if I can figure out anything using that

- lastly if I can find a spare ECM at a reasonable cost, I may swap it out to test

I will update when I do resolve - but I wouldnt hold your breathe - it could be a long winter

Anyone know which ECM's will work (plug-n-play) in my 06' Uly?

I "think" the 08' and newer are different - larger with different connectors???

Will the older XB units work ?

the 08+ ECMs are completely different animals. All the previous ones should work though there may have tweaks to the fuel maps etc. over the years. ECMs from 07 down XB12's will be plug and play with a TPS reset.

I *think* you can use one from an XB9 so long as you are comfortable flashing the ECM. Someone correct me if I am wrong on that point.
