I dont have my service manual handy, could someone please tell me the torque specs for the stem or steering head bolts? |

The cap nut (torque) sets the preload on the steering head bearings, so the spec, in the manual, is for the OEM annular bearings. My question is: what spec are people using for taper roller bearing replacements? |

I guess you could use the resistance test as per HD spec even for roller bearings. I always used "feel" to set up my head bearings and did so as well with the OEM ones on this bike IE They feel a bit loose then tighten them up a bit and vis versa. But that is just me but works fine. Or in other words you can set them as you like as long as they are not to tight or slack. And once you fit new ones you will need to re-set them after a few miles. Just remember to loose off the lower fork clamps while you set them. Have fun. (Message edited by uly_man on September 13, 2013) |

You can do it the old bump test way: remove the clutch cable and master cylinder, get the front wheel off of the ground and bump the handlebar off center. After a couple of taps the wheel should slowly swing to full lock. If it just flops over you're too loose, if it hangs up you're too tight. |

Notchiness when turning the bars. It's real easy to put way too much pressure on the balls and crunch them. |

Installed a set of AllBalls taper roller bearings and seals in my Uly today. Must say I was doubtful about removing the forks, lower tree and front wheel as an assembly. But it indeed does come off as an assembly. And, installing the wheel/fork assy was way easier going back in. I used the tried and true (old school) method of adjusting the head bearings; by feel it was... Been a while since I've done any repairs like that. So glad to be retired and not have to make a living workiing on bikes or cars anymore. |

I just put tapered bearings from All Balls in the steering head of my Uly and after about 8 adjustments, I settled on 30 foot pounds before I liked how it felt. Anyone else have thoughts? |
