We Netflix binged through all the episodes of "Long way down" over a few days. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0959858/

Then we watched "Long Way Round" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0403778/?ref_=sr_1

Anyways, we thoroughly enjoyed both of these travelogues. KTM really showed what a bunch of p.ussies they are when they backed out because they thought Ewan and Charlie would fail. Those two guys really impressed us with their perseverance and toughness. And the camera guy, Claudio, deserves just as much credit too. He was with them all the way and did a bang up job of it. Really worth sitting through all the episodes. Sure hope they dream up another trip together. 5 stars from us.

Spousal unit wondered why 12x motor roll took 5 months to get it right. Hah! With those movies out in garage as well as 10th kingdom, witchblade , etc. Interesting stuff in movie would require a relight of the cigar and yes, a refresh of kentucky elixir and would watch the tube insteadof working the 12x over. Amazing how priority can change in just a few short moments.

Yeah I get sucked into those DVD's from time to time. I bought long way round, down, and Charlie's Dakar adventure as a DVD set a while back. Once or twice a year I pop one in the machine and veg out. I still enjoy them. Wife recently told me they were on Netflix. I smiled. She said Oh No - not again: ) She enjoyes most of them as well. She's just afraid I won't stop there ... On Any Sunday, Mondo Enduro, ...

I thought the Claudio and Charlie were great although Claudio would have to be shot for the same reason Gilligan should have been. But Ewen? wow buck up dude. Your crying because you didn't get the KTM that you wanted? Then SnapOn gives them a nice big roll a way full of tools that they obviously don't know how to use.
Maybe i'm too old school now, but I didn't see anyone from Mondo Enduro cry or whimper and they did mostly the same route with NO support trucks and staff.

"KTM really showed what a bunch of p.ussies they are when they backed out because they thought Ewan and Charlie would fail". Err, whatever you may have read/seen that was not quite the case. I was about there at the time. It is MUCH longer story than is stated. The short answer is that KTM could not care less what they did.

Does anyone really think that this stuff is REAL. Its a media thing with a production crew behind it as long as your arm and the next best thing to a mobile BMW workshop along with it.

Watching the first one I thought both sides were being a little tedious.

Charlie for being such a drama queen about "they didn't give us free bikes" think, and KTM for being so dense that they didn't jump on a good opportunity (and thereby avoiding me watching Charlie being a drama queen). Seems like either side could have sorted it pretty easily, if it's a genuine adventure than "somebody didn't hand me a motorcycle" probably ought not to be an insurmountable obstacle. ; )

Good movie though, and it actually did make me appreciate BMW for what BMW is... smart. I may not have the same preferences BMW has, and in fact I don't. But I do know at the end of the day that every decision they made was a solid one, so even if it isn't what I want it is smart for what it is.

Yes there is a reason for that. It is all about what folk see and NOT WHAT they do not. No one in there right mind uses a GS "off road". The original version from WW2 worked for a while but thats it. I have known at least 4 people who have run these bike on the road and they were crap. Big buy cost, big fixing costs, not good handling and all round pile of fecking junk.

Run what you like though. If you are lucky E Mc G may come and be a bit "British Luvvie" on YOU?

And while I am about it I have seen better acting from a length of 4 x 2. How anyone can take the role of Alec G and destroy it so badly is beyond belief.

And even more so.

You ride a bike. It may go wrong so fix the dam thing. Do not wait for dealers or other. If you ride a bike you should be able to fix it. Sort of along the lines of doing it in your own life. Or maybe you think it owes you something because you paid money. Get a GRIP or Feck off back to LA LA LAND. Winging is a bore.

Oh Mr Booby I have a slight "shine" on my tank cover. What would that be about?

"I for one enjoyed the heck out of those shows." Cool I am happy you did.

"Ulyman, explain what you know about KTM vs BMW." Thats a long one and really not worth getting into now. It was a long time ago.

Enjoy, have fun and stuff. End of.

Because it is just plain cruel for Ulyman to leave us hanging, I'll tell you what I was told by a woman who claimed to work on the film. I don't know if this is true or if the woman really did work on the film or not, but here it goes anyway:

KTM apparently had an off-road consultant review the route. There was one particular section that the consultant thought was impassable for ANY motorcycle and extremely hazardous during that time of the year. Alledgedly, KTM's concern was not that the bikes would fail to make it through this section (they knew any bike would fail) but that one of these very famous people could be seriously injured or killed. This lady's claim was that KTM didn't want to be a part of such a tragedy, both from the human and PR element. Further, KTM would have apparently still been game had that particular part of the route been revised.

So that is my heresy-laden, well salted tidbit. Hopefully someone else can offer a more concrete summary of what really went down.

Buewulf,
That was pretty much what could be inferred from the film. Except the worrying about Ewan or Charlie being killed whilst using a KTM. Seems kind of lame considering the Paris to Dakar use of their bikes. I think someone at KTM just made a snap judgement without really thinking about the consequences. It surely didn't leave KTM looking like they even sported a pair if you know what I mean. I wonder how a chain would stack up against a sealed drive shaft. I personally do not care for driveshafts on motorcycles.

Yes, I was hoping Ulyman would get disgusted with my drivel and share what he knows. I personally don't buy the danger / failure excuse for the exact reasons you mention: KTM participates in racing events paved and unpaved - all with a high risk of both failure and bodily harm. There had to be more to it than that.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dakar_Rally_f atal_accidents

Several KTM riders listed. Personally, I liked watching Meoni run the pi$$ out of the blue Gauloises KTMs.

Now that I think about it, Sainct and Meoni were both KTM riders at one point. Both much better than CB and EMac. Maybe KTM was justifiably concerned...

Local rider doing it his way. His camera crew is in his tank bag and others he meets along the way.
