Fellow Ulygans,

I was riding down the interstate and maintaining a constant 70-75 mph, increased the speed to 100mph and felt a sudden loss in power/shut off and my eyes automatically my fell upon the red engine light. This happened for a split second, during which I let go of the throttle simultaneously and the light went off and the engine returned back to its running condition and I was doing a steady and effortless 70-75 mph again. This completely ruined the ride and I couldn't trust the Uly throughout the whole ride. On my way back on the interstate I did short pulls of 90 mph but, I couldn't gather the balls to hit 100 mph again. I finished the ride and completed 60 miles after this small incident. The ambient air temperature wasn't too bad (85-90F) but I noticed that the fan was on throughout the ride. This on a '06 w/o rider comfort kit. The previous owner swears that he has a race ECM but for some reason I don't think so, the ECM doesn't have the "RACE ONLY" marking on it (if it helps t/s the issue).

Please help !

Petro- that's not a lot of information to go on. I suppose the engine could have gotten too hot and gone into "skip spark" mode for just a second or two, but that doesn't seem very likely, since the ambient temperature wasn't that high. Have you checked the engine oil level? If the oil was a little low, it could cause the engine to run hotter than normal. Another possibility that occurs to me is that the Bank Angle Sensor (BAS) just barely actuated (maybe from vibration at that speed?) or the BAS is about to fail. IIRC, a replacement BAS is only about $30 if you want to try that.

The race ECM should be stenciled "RACE USE ONLY", but it's possible a stock ECM was re-programmed with a race ECM map, which can be done with ECM-Spy. I believe you could hook the bike up to ECM-Spy and verify if the ECM's been re-programmed.

My '06 started it's run/skip phase the same kind of way.

I am thinking your engine got too hot for a second or two going into run/skip, that kills the power to save itself.

Mine would go back to normal in seconds when it first did it. Then as miles went on, the more frequently it did it. Then it would not stop doing it above 70F and 70 mph.

To find out if this is the problem don't be afraid to try it again. If you are hitting spark/skip it will, and is, saving itself from over heating. Mine did it many many times a few years back without hurting anything(but my attitude).

I solved mine by running the fan all of the time with a manual switch. This, after trying everything else for nearly two summers. It has always run great when cooler temps were present.

I don't think it could be the BAS circuit since it latches the bike off until the ignition is turned off/on again.

I think you should pop off the airbox and see if the throttle linkages rub into anything when they are opened all the way.

It may just be a temperature thing too.

Check all easy/cheap things first!

It is also quite possible that the 100mph threshold was purely coincidental. Is the ECM still located in the factory position? You get little surprises like that when the ECM first starts to fail.

@Hughlysses, How to check if the BAS is bad or it's about to go bad ?
@Etennuly, I hope that it's a temperature anomaly too.
@Natex, I checked the oil level and it seemed to be alright. Also the oil felt thick and still alright.
@Buewulf, The ECM is still in its factory location and I have been checking it every so often. Need to look if it's about to stop.

Thanks all for your input !

I had this same problem. Would ride for approx. 15 minutes, and at or above 70 mph it would just click off for like one second, the engine light would flick on then off, then the bike would resume as normal. Found hairline cracks in the the ecm, relocated it, and have not experienced this since. The ecm still needs replacing, but at least it solved what you are describing. Good luck!
