I hear you lot talking about changing the primary or checking the Primary. .... what's a primary? I change the oil in the swing arm, adjust my clutch cable, and to a TPS reset twice a year. Other than that it has been rather low on maintenance. Other than broken stuff. SHould I be verifying? changin? this mysterious Primary as well? MMcC |

The primary drive is the chain that connects the crankshaft to the transmission. The primary needs a ton of maintenance, as the chain will stretch over time and needs to be carefully adjusted, also the fluid needs to be periodically changed. It shares the fluid with the transmission. The primary chain lives under the cover that the shift linkage sticks out of, and there are two tiny removable windows that allow you to inspect the chain and clutch ramp. |

I'd b.et that is one rancid primary. (Message edited by electraglider_1997 on July 23, 2013) |

The primary also contains your stator and rotor - your charging system. Front pulley is attached to the crankshaft of the engine, and has the stator/rotor assembly as well as teeth that run the chain. The chain goes back to the clutch pack, which is mounted on the transmission input shaft. The drain plug is on the bottom of the large cover, near the sidestand mount. The adjuster screw and nut are also down there, for primary chain adjustment. It is the "primary" output of the engine - engine to transmission. The belt final drive is considered the "secondary" drive. Do you have a shop manual? How many miles have you ridden it without changing the fluid?!?!? |

Ok, so I just always thought that was the the transmission assy. Makes sense now. Bike has 42,000km on it, but it has been changed once at about 30,000km when HD rebuilt my engine. Remember this: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/658606.html?1367858592 My bike is now failing to start. All I get is a whizzing sound. Bendix failing to engage? Better call HD and order a transmission / Primary gasket, because looks like I got to take that whole thing apart to get to the starter. What do you think the whizzing sound could be? Needs changing more than that |

Drop the tools and step slowly away from the bike. Start with a fluid change in the primary, and primary chain tension adjustment. See if it gets better. If still sick, jump it from a car that is NOT running. Never hook the bike to a running car. If it works, your battery or charging system needs help. |

If it's the starter, most of those issues are related to the solenoid contacts, which can be replaced without removing the starter. |
