My wife and I have two Ulysses - an 08 X and an 09 XT. Both run the same ECM's (racing), same mufflers (stock), same air filters (K&N), same oil (Amsoil 10W40). Every time we ride together the XT runs hotter - the fan kicks in after you shut the engine off while on the X it doesn't. Any idea what could be causing it? Thanks! | ||

Nope, no comfort kit on neither. The bikes are identical in terms of mods except for one is an X an another is an XT. | ||

My 08 X's fan runs after shut down every time it gets hot. Stock ECM, stock filter, comfort kit with no reflash. I did notice the fan shuts off sooner after the kit was installed. Maybe your 08 ECM is flashed for the comfort kit. Can you flash a race ECM for a comfort kit? | ||

Swap the ECMs between both bikes. Only other factor would be the head temperature sensor. Also, depending on the individual's riding style will vary the running temperature a bit. | ||

Okay, maybe its not the beak but the variance in the temp sender for the fan. | ||

Do both have bags? I notice a 3mpg variance on my X from bags to no bags. That equals airframe drag. Airframe drag equals "harder working engine". | ||

Maybe the cause has to do with the changes from the 2008 models to the 2009 models. The OP's X is a '08 and his XT is a '09. | ||

"the XT bike fan kicks in after you shut the engine off while on the X it doesn't." The "after the engine shuts off" is the key note. This is something the 06 bikes do and poss to stop overheating the engine at standing due to how that engine works. It is a fan "over ride" via the ECM and may have been left in the EBR ECM for "whatever" reason. It could, of course, be something else. A easy/quick check would be a hand on engine casing and oil temp test. If they are much the same do not worry. If you want to change the fan logic you can with TunerPro ie switch the over ride off. | ||

The 10 fan logic causes the fan to run while riding but not after shut down. The 08 runs after shut down but only comes when riding in real hot conditions. It may be possible the 09 got the 10 fan logic. | ||

both bikes have a full set of bags. thanks Froggy, I will try swapping ECM's next time we go on a ride. I don't know whether the ECM's are flushed for comfort kit or not, they are identical Racing ECM's from EBR designed to work with a stock exhaust. As for changes from an 08 to 09 accounting in the running temperature - I am kind of doubting that. The biggest difference being the engine colored black on the 09 vs silver-ish on the 08. I still think that the difference in the airflow caused by differently shaped front fenders and the fact that the front suspension is shorter on the XT (possibly letting less air to go towards the engine) could be causing it, at least partially. | ||

Follow Froggy's advice. The fact that the fan runs after shutdown on one but not the other is a pretty good indicator that the logic program is different. My 08 has the latest flash pre comfort kit which leaves the fan on. The next newer flash will turn the fan on sooner while riding and off at shutdown. Just see which one you prefer and tell the wife " gee, I think I'll take that bike today, dear ".  | ||

Strange as it may sound, Albedo Effect. 08 silver reflects heat. 09 black absorbs heat. Might also have a little to do with it, you never know. | ||

On real hot days my fan runs  after shutdown.08XT with c/k and reflash. |
