At around 73,000 miles the old Useless started bucking and carrying on and I know what that is, it's the front spark plug lead. Sure enough, the throttle cable ended up pushing the lead out of the coil. A gentleman here warned me to move the coil up off of the mount a bit so that's what I ended up doing - about 3/4" did the trick. These bikes have the weirdest problems but at least they're easy enough to fix. |

Yep, 3/4" sounds like what I did. Puts the wire between the cables and no more problems. |

The problem returned and it's that cheap POS P&A Low Seat again. I cut a board to keep it off of the battery but the board wasn't long enough, it shifted and the seat was hitting the positive battery cable and loosened it just enough to drive everything crazy. A quick tighten and board shift in the rain on the side of the road and it's going well again. Tomorrow I cut a longer board so this can't happen again. Cheap hunka plastic crap seat pan. |

Arrggghhh, the dreaded TPS error code. To the dealer we go on Friday. This bike really likes to try and take a vacation every Summer. |

I hope your seat+board dance didn't damage the ECU. |

The ECM is stuffed as far down as possible and is pretty well cushioned. The seat DID wreck the first Race ECM two summers ago before I realized what was happening. P.S. I hope so, too! I know that the TPS needs a reset as it's been a while. I don't know if this code just means a reset is long overdue or the TPS is taking a dump. (Message edited by SteveFord on July 17, 2013) |

I just got back from Lancaster H-D in Willow Street, PA and Brandon took a look see and there was something weird with the TPS voltage: when he'd go to move the adjuster cable it'd bounce all over the place. He pulled the air box, made sure that the TPS hadn't come loose, reset the TPS, the voltage didn't bounce all over hell and creation and all is good in Useless land. It hasn't run this good in 25,000 miles, it is so nice to not have the old buck and surge going. It has a little over 72,500 miles on it right now. I will hit 100,000 before it gets a little TLC yet! What it DOES NEED however is a good check over every now and then, say around 5000 miles or so, for the problems that can happen with this bike. If you do not look after a bike it will let you down at some point. But thats not the bikes fault nor does it make it a BAD bike. |

A little TLC means rotating the motor down and taking care of cosmetics. The goal is to see if the Fruitster motor is good enough to go 100,000 miles without needing anything other than normal maintenance. I set this bike up at the dealership and am the original owner. Simply because I call it the Useless doesn't mean I think it's a bad bike by any means. At any rate, if your bike is running really strangely, hook it up to the Digital Tech and rotate the idle adjuster cable and see if the voltage goes berserk on you like mine was doing. "Simply because I call it the Useless doesn't mean I think it's a bad bike by any means." I never said you did and if you want to drop the motor for "cosmetic" reasons that is your choice. |
