Okay, so I have posted a number of times in the past about all of the popping, sputtering and stalling my '08 has done since I bought it a little over a year ago. I have replaced the plugs (no change), installed EBR-ECM, replaced intake seals, changed plugs again, checked/cleaned IAC, run seafoam through fuel system, checked/cleaned grounds... I have stated in the past that I am committed to getting this thing to run the way I think it should... but I am getting ready to give up. It seems to run fantastic for a few minutes after a TPS Reset (hot)... then falls back into the same behavior. I'm at the point now where I am doing TPS reset a few times per hour when riding around in town. It has started doing the cold-start-idle-surge that I have seen in YouTube videos of other '08's. Sometimes pulls like a freight train on hard acceleration, other times seems to lack significant power. My last ride is stalled on me twice while downshifting at low speed. When starting from a stop it struggles to get moving. I don't know if it's going lean or rich but it goes into a bog. The only way I can leave a stop without it bogging is to get the rev's up and slip the clutch until the bike is up to speed. If I just start normally (trying to accelerate once clutch is fully engaged) it starts rolling then almost bogs to a stop before coming to life and accelerating normally. Has anybody with an '08 or '09 experienced any of this? if so, does anyone have any idea where I can look next? I don't have much free time... when I have time I like to ride. At this point I am not really enjoying it anymore. |

Maybe you have a bad TPS? That might explain why TPS resets help for a while. I'd think that's a reasonably inexpensive part and wouldn't be difficult to replace. |

Agreed, sounds like the tps is loose inside. |

If you have an old needle-gauge multimeter you can test the TPS. Remove the sensor. Connect the multimeter probes to signal and ground terminals on the TPS. "Turn" the sensor shaft. You should get a clean needle sweep. Drops or spikes indicate a dead spot on the sensor. |

Dumb question, not trying to insult you... I did this wrong and it screwed me up for a few hours until I did the forehead slap. How are you doing the TPS reset? On my 07, it takes hooking up ECM spy and hitting the button (which I did)... but also requires first setting the idle screw all the way out (which I didn't). That screws up all sorts of things. I think later versions of the ECM have an on bike way to do the TPS reset, do they still require the idle screw to be backed all the way out? Are you doing that first? |

Sounds like how my bike acted until I replaced the TPS. |

Okay, maybe it's the TPS... I'll check it out with an analog meter and see if it has any dead spots. The TPS reset on an '08 is really simplified... since there is no idle screw. I almost hope that it is the TPS... that would be the simplest solution. If this thing didn't have "moments of clarity" (that's what I've come to call them) when the bike has awesome power I would probably just sell it like the previous owner did! |

"I would probably just sell it like the previous owner did!" Which is, from what I have come to believe, many have done in the past. In other words they just give up on the bike. What you really need to use is something like TunerPro to check the engine management system sensors because that is what the problem sounds like. In does take a bit of time to learn and set up but, trust me, it is the best way to go. And is the WINDOW to the soul of the bike. Ok so if you can not use something like Tunerpro you are going to have to go along the expensive route of just changing out parts. If you are going to go along this route I would start with the AIT sensor first and then the O2 sensor because I had problems with both and they are easy to change out. I have never come across a problem with the engine or timing sensors but that does not mean they could be the problem. I would then check the TPS but as some have said that is not easy to check it is 100% so may be worth changing it out to be sure it is good. Tips to start with? On a cold engine the O2 sensor has no effect on the engine. It works from about 100c plus. If the bike runs bad from cold it is another sensor so start with the IAT. |

I have read that I can not use tunerpro with my EBR ECM!?! Never having looked into these products... can they be used to monitor sensor signals with the bike running? I decided early on that I would not give up... but with no dealer support within 400km and the fact that I don't have time and/or money to throw at this thing... I am losing patience! |

"I have read that I can not use tunerpro with my EBR ECM!?!" Yes it can and proved. "Never having looked into these products... can they be used to monitor sensor signals with the bike running?". Yes they can and TunerPro will give you a "logged run" data that will show, most, of all you need to know. |

So where do you get the cord to hook up a computer to the bike and where on the bike do you hook it up to? |

American Sports Bike has the cable for about $50. On my 06, it hooks up under the left side of the seat where the plastic vent thingy is. |

This sounds very similar to how my 2008 acts just after startup. It goes away when warm. New plugs and O2 sensor didn't change it. Mine also gets better right after a TPS reset. Now I am wondering if I have a degraded TPS. I have ECM spy so I'll look at TPS response and let you know what I see. |
